The Lincoln community in the United States has launched a GoFundMe initiative to help raise money for the family of Kupo Mleya, the 38-year-old Zimbabwean who was shot dead last Friday after an apparent car crash.
Police arrived to find a crashed Jeep Patriot and Mleya with multiple gunshot wounds.
They performed CPR before Lincoln Fire & Rescue arrived but were unsuccessful.
On Christmas Eve, police arrested 23-year-old suspect Karsen Rezac on suspicion of second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony.
Stephen Kaludzu, who is the brother-in-law of Kupo Mleya, started the GoFundMe campaign. Kaludzu wrote:
Hi, my name is Stephen and I am fundraising for my brother-in-law’s Kupo Mleya funeral, whose life was tragically taken away on December 22 2022 near S 20th and Washington streets, Lincoln Nebraska. Thank you for your support.
At the time Pindula News wrote this article, $26 455 USD had been raised out of the targeted $20 000.
Kupo was the son of the late Brigadier General Fakazi Mleya who died in 2007 and was declared a national hero.
Mleya emigrated to the U.S. to attend school and moved to Lincoln in the 2010s.
