Alibaba Founder Jack Ma Spotted In Thailand Over A Year After Retreating From Spotlight
Chinese billionaire and founder of Alibaba, Jack Ma was spotted in Bangkok, Thailand last week more than a year after retreating from the spotlight.
Jack Ma “disappeared” from the public space when regulators in China launched a clampdown on his business empire in late 2021, according to Reuters.
Little has been heard from the once-outspoken Chinese billionaire since he criticised China’s financial regulators in a speech in Shanghai in 2020.
On Friday, Michelin-starred chef Supinya “Jay Fai” Junsuta posted a picture of himself with Ma on Instagram along with the message “incredibly humble, we are honored to welcome you and your family to Jay Fai’s.“
Several local media also reported that Ma was at the restaurant and also attended a boxing match at Bangkok’s Rajadamnern Stadium.
Ma is set to give up control of the Chinese fintech giant Ant Group as the group embarks on a major corporate restructuring.
Chinese tech companies, including Alibaba and Ant, have been the target of a wide-ranging regulatory crackdown on issues ranging from monopolistic behaviour to consumer rights.
