OpenTshinga Dube (81) Responds To Reports That He Is Too Old For NRZ Board Post

Colonel (retired) Tshinga Dube (81), a former Cabinet minister and ZANU PF politburo member, defended his most recent appointment to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) board yesterday by stating that his mind was still sound and stable enough to contribute to the parastatal.
His latest appointment to the NRZ board by Transport and Infrastructure Development minister Felix Mhona triggered public outcry with some Zimbabweans saying the “struggling” parastatal needed new blood.
Political analyst Rashweat Mukundu is among those who believe Dube should not have been appointed. He told Pindula News that the appointment was testimony that the leadership does not understand what is required to revive NRZ. He told this reporter this Wednesday:
My (Twitter) post was an expression of disappointment over the appointment of an 81-year-old who under normal circumstances must be retired. He was appointed to the board of a struggling state enterprise (NRZ) which obviously needs new thinking, new ideas, of new blood. Zimbabwe has hundreds and hundreds of capable engineers, business managers who can help save the struggling state enterprise. What I see is kleptocracy meant to benefit them from the SOE. I have nothing personal against him (Dube) as a person, but I’m totally against the appointment.
Dube, who holds a Master’s Degree in Electro-Tech from MADI Institute of Technology in Moscow, Russia, told NewsDay that his mind is very sharp and stable. He is quoted as saying:
I was appointed by my President Emmerson Mnangagwa who is the appointing authority. If you have queries, go and ask him. l have committed no sin to be appointed to the NRZ board, after all, l am not the chief executive officer.
I don’t work on my feet, but I use my brains, and my brain is still stable. l have been in the industry for many years, and have sat on over 20 boards worldwide. l have resuscitated many companies and I don’t care what people say since I would not be able to answer to all of them.
The NRZ announced that Dube would join the board for a three-year term.
Dube, a former Minister of Welfare Services for War Veterans, War Collaborators and Former Political Detainees, was born on June 3, 1941.

The appointment of Retired Col Tshinga Dube is 100% correct why cannot you balance all matters life with old people. I think there is something wrong in schools nowadays. Why do you think young people are better than old people. Advantages of old peopleare as follow: 1. Vast experience in most things of life. 2. ldeas should me mixed with those who were there before you in achieve many life matters. 3. Even if you find out from those Western Countries who brainwash sometimes. Most of yheir important Boards in key Govt industries a lot of Retired Army and Govt industries have very old people some older than Cde. T.
Dube. The list of advantages of old people goes on on until l can write a book.
Disadvantages of young qualified people eith Degrees.
1. Lack of past knowledge on how some mistakes, matters, were solved before you were born.
2. E.G. some matters problems, mistakes in anything in life do not need Degrees Diplomas etc. Life experience matters a lot with a vibrant Common Medulla Ablangata. old do better or best mixed young people. Do you agree now YRS

@Truth if the matter you have done a commendable effort in justifying experience.
In structural engineering and physics there is something called metal fatigue. Very strong steel used to construct Birchenough Bridge served is well, but now there are limitations to the tonnage that same steel can carry today. Because that steel is old and tired. Likewise in physiology there is mental fatigue. The mental capability of a 40 year old is vastly superior to one of 80. That's a proven fact.
In economics there is the Law of Diminishing Returns. The corollary is that even with experience, there reaches a point where that experience becomes irrelevant. Graham Bell invented the telephone, but if he were alive today, he would be lost in cellular telephony. Likewise Dube's experience of 50 years ago is irrelevant to today's environment.
The wisdom of appointing an 81 year old Dube to a strategic corporate is doubtful. Whoever made that decision to appoint Dube needs a t****ugh mental examination.

A Masters degree in ElectroTech MAY be useful at ZESA, but certainly not in a service industry like NRZ. in the same way as a Doctorate in Economics does not qualify one to prescribe aspirin.
30 boards experience without examining the performance of those boards is an exercise in quantum irrelevance.
To crown it all as other commentators have said, with age the brain atrophies. At 80, therefore the brain should be retired, even though the flesh is still alive.

This is cronyism at its lowest ebb. Jobs for the boys, and an attempt to appease the ZAPU fraction within ZANU.
Tshinga was retired from Zimbabwe Defence Industries, and was thrust into Parliament as a retirement package, only to be appointed to the War Veterans post in order to balance the ZANLA-ZIPRA equation when Mugabe was tottering on the brink of a military revolt because of the failed economic policies and his attempt to centralise power in the Mugabe family dynasty.
The fact that he may have, some eons ago prior to independence, obtained a somewhat relevant education in sciences from Russia is neither here nor there. Qualifications of 50 years ago are irrelevant in today's fast changing technological innovations. Even PhDs do retire at some stage, not because they are not educated. but mental faculties fail with age. A brilliant nuclear physicist at age 40, isn't the same at 80. Period.
Dube is an inappropriate appointment for resuscitation of an ailing, moribund NRZ.
