ZIMSEC Says High Passes Do Not Affect Exam Credibility

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) says there is nothing wrong with Advanced Level candidates attaining high grades in public examinations.

This comes after a former Ruya Adventist Secondary School student Tadiwanashe Mavetera scored 10As in the November 2022 ZIMSEC A’ Level examination while at Pamushana High School in Bikita there was a high yield of As with 103 students scoring more than 15 points each.

Pamushana High School’s best student, Abraham Ndlovu scored 30 points and he got straight As in Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Pure Mathematics and Statistics.

ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicky Dlamini said people should understand that access to learning resources has increased, hence high passes attained at A’ Level. She said:

Our mandate is to award candidates according to their performances. We do not change grades because candidates are performing well.

One thing that we should realise is that the candidates that are being compared now have better access to learning resources and extra lessons that they are exposed to.

Therefore, it will be obvious that those that have access to these resources will perform much better.

It does not affect the credibility of examinations at all because we assess the curriculum being taught to these candidates.

The public should investigate how were the students being taught. What was their learning system like?

How did that school produce those results? ZIMSEC comes after teaching, we do not come before teaching.

If these candidates are doing well, people should then look at the teaching to say there is a good teacher behind the candidate.

We benchmark regionally and internationally for our assessment standards.

We do not judge or look at individual candidates, we look at assessment standards, and that is our mandate.

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Deputy Minister Edgar Moyo said the improved grades were normal. | The Sunday News

Cambridge o level exam is meant to identify academics and these make 25% of exam writers. This means that if the pass rate goes beyond 25% , something is wrong with the exam. A level exam is for the purpose of university entrance.

Access to exam papers & their mark sheets before they are set for will always lead credibility issues, nomatter how you deny it, it's there truth, zimsec has lost credibility, infact everything that starts with Z.... It's a problem

Credibility of Zimsec is questionable. Cambridge i doubt kunomboitwa zvemunhu anobuda ne 30 points or 50points izvo. Papers are getting leaked every year

The more the leakages the higher the passrate

Zimsec seemed losing its mind on this matter....it shows their curriculum is not equivalent to the level of their candidates. It means A levels might be writing O level equivalent exams yet O levels at ZJC level. On a normal circumstances they are instilling confusion within students and causing more paper linkages seeking for prestige. I'm telling you this today someone has 8 points genuine take them with someone to the university and compare with one with 19 points. You will be surprised one with 8 will perform better than 19 ....zimsec has lost its credibility and they have to work extra hard to turn back the times. ikutogwa ne technology zimsec vana vatori mberi kwema teacher coz vakuziva ma paper avo 🤣 ticha atove benzi. zimsec must know in urban areas ticha one anodzidzisa 10 subjects extra lessons because haashote mapaper ose iwayo from the source. n o n s e n s e!!

it isn't fair or just for govt to neglect civil servants by awarding poor salaries & working conditions. resultantly teachers are DEMANDING $10 tuition fee for extra lessons from parents. The surprise is even students at ECDB level are said to be having extra lessons. OH!! PLEASE! there has been a defeaning silence about this development from the govt, the Ministry of Education nor the ,Teachers' Unions. Turning a blind eye to such blackmail is indicative of how Zimbabwe has turned into a mafia state. A comment & plan from the relevant authorities would be welcome although I will not be surprised if they ignore these suggestions & keep quiet. It's a frigging circus and guess who's the fathermucking 🤡?

Very true

True @Doug That equation balances very well no matter how much Zimsec refutes this
