President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Saturday conferred national hero status on Brigadier-General Epmarcus Walter Kanhanga (Rtd), who died on Thursday.
Brig-Gen Kanhanga died at his rural Guruve home in Mashonaland Central at the age of 73.
The conferment of hero status on Brig-Gen Kanhanga was announced by the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Mischeck Sibanda. He said in a statement:
His Excellency the President, Dr ED Mnangagwa, today announced the conferment of National Hero Status on the late Brigadier-General Epmarcus Walter Kanhanga (wartime name Cde Charles Munyoro), who passed on at his Guruve home in the early hours of Thursday, 2nd February 2023.
This decision by the party to honor the late Brigadier-General in this very special way is in recognition of his wartime role as a freedom fighter; his loyal and diligent service to the country and region as a senior officer of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, ZDF; his role as a Deputy Minister of Government; as a Member of Parliament; as a leader in the corporate world, and as a consistent cadre of the ruling ZANU PF party.
Brig-Gen Kanhanga is expected to be buried at the National Heroes’ Acre at a date yet to be announced.
