Govt Plans To Install 300 More Base Stations In 2023

The government plans to install more than 300 base stations (boosters) across the country this year to improve connectivity, especially in rural areas.

According to African Wireless Communications, the installation and operation of the base stations will be entrusted to NetOne, a State-owned telecoms firm.

This was said by Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Jenfan Muswere. He said:

We have sent our team to do mapping and scoping, and we want to make sure that we are connecting the unconnected people.

He said the initiative is part of the Smart Zimbabwe 2030 master plan which aims to improve connectivity within communities

Misplaced priorities. Instead of planning ahead on real issues such as worsening electricity crisis first as these base stations still run on electricity. Right now is the time to halt all other less critical projects but expedite projects that anchor industry and economic development. Zesa is now a net importer of electricity creating a huge burden on the economy as it is externalizing scarce foreign currency.
