ZESA Generating 951 MW Of Electricity Against Demand Of 2 200MW

ZESA Generating 951 MW Of Electricity Against Demand Of 2 200MW

ZESA Holdings subsidiary, Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), says it is generating 951 megawatts (MW) of electricity against a national peak demand of 2 200MW.

The power shortage has resulted in the country experiencing electricity blackouts of up to 18 hours per day in some areas.

Despite the successful synchronisation of Hwange Unit 7 into the national grid, ZETDC call centre supervisor Milton Zata said they were still facing challenges. NewsDay quotes Zata as saying:

Unfortunately, we have national grid challenges, resulting in these long outages.

This comes amid reports that traditional power suppliers – South Africa and Mozambique – recently stopped exporting electricity to Zimbabwe due to arrears.

The blackouts are seriously affecting businesses and industries countrywide.

With Hwange Unit 7 appearing to struggle to feed the envisaged 300MW into the national grid following its upgrade, the power crisis is set to persist as Hwange’s Unit 8 is only expected to go live in October with another 300MW.

The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), a ZESA subsidiary, announced Tuesday that the southern African nation was generating 951 MW of electricity at three power stations as shown below:

Munyati ……………………………………. 16MW

Bulawayo ……………………………………. 0MW

Harare ………………………………………..  0MW

Kariba …………………………………………. 350MW

Hwange ……………………………………… 585MW

TOTAL …………………………………………. 951MW
Zimbabwe is experiencing a power crisis due to a lack of investment and outdated equipment. This has resulted in frequent power outages and reduced production in industries, leading to job losses and decreased revenue. Small businesses, hospitals, schools, and water treatment plants have also been affected.
The power crisis has also led to an increase in illegal electricity connections and theft, which is dangerous and contributes to revenue losses.
Resolving the crisis will require significant investment and policy changes in the power sector.
There are several alternative sources of electricity that households and businesses can use in addition to traditional electricity. These include solar power, biogas, mini-grids, wind power, hydropower, and generator sets.
These sources can provide more sustainable and affordable energy, especially in areas where electricity is limited.

Electricity production is very intriguing. Just last week citizens were told that Harare Thermal Power Station was producing 10 MW. [CHAMISA CHETE CHETE ]. Today citizens hear a different story without explanation. It is is said to be producing 0 MW. Electricity Managers do not reveal what unit 7 is currently contributing to the national grid except to say it is finding it difficult to produce meaningfully into the national grid. [ NYIKA INO IRI KUURAIWA NE MBAVHA DZAYO DZE ZANU PF ]. Our other solace is the KARIBA South Hydro where by June the water level will have increased: hence the expected corresponding increase in MW. [ THE BUSH LAWYER4CCC].

Very Excellent..900MG...mmm..that is too much high...now we know why the electricity is always blacking out...the reason is , too much electricity on yhe the grids..causing overflow overlowd and unceremonious bust....

The country is run by insane people, who could afford to give each other half a million dollars in soft loans but can't pay electricity debts to supplies. When the economy is dead due to shortage of electricity where will you get tax from?
Anonymous · 2 years ago
And by 20 March 2023 the load shedding will be over after synchronizations of Hwange 7..... So they say .

I was born as a city boy, I got used to using electricity all my life, this is not fair. We are living in a powerless country, our leaders don't think about the future. Couldn't they take note kuti our structures are old we need new ones, not even one engineer saw that aaah

very good suggestion but the thing is you cannot do anything infact we cannot do anything its gvt responsibility ,you cannot even prove energy consumption in your community bt you can for your family use only nd that is solar energy, this is bcoz we don hve resources i side you also on the fact that talking all day cannot solve anything its jus a futile exercise bt we are doing it for leisure kkkk

We are very much aware of this. What we want now is news of encouragement. Negative news will not help us move forward. Let's talk about something positive. We cannot solve ZESA or Zimbabwe's problems with our ears. But we can make up with positive ideas. What should we do? Shouldn't we harness the power of the sun etc to see us though? Let’s start sharing ideas, on the way forward.

Yes the first step is to remove zanupf government then we can find solutions to the problems we are facing.
Professor L · 2 years ago
If only we had a government that uses it's brains we wouldn't have these power challenges, Investments in the solar energy sector should had been carried out long ago using our Zim based companies. These leaders knew Hwange wouldn't keep sustaining us for many years but instead of investing in solar biogas etc the money for doing so was looted eg look at the Winston whatever case it just shows you the kind of uncommitted and a joke of government we have
