Lithium Exports Can Surpass Gold, Says ZIDA CEO

Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA) chief executive officer Tafadzwa Chinamo believes lithium exports can earn more foreign currency for the country than gold as more investors express eagerness to venture into lithium mining and beneficiation.

In an interview with NewsDay recently, Chinamo said a lot of investment is going into lithium. He said:

Investor interest is definitely there as you shall see from the (soon-to-be-released investment) figures.

There were a lot of investments, a lot of inquiries, and a lot of licences issued by ZIDA dominated obviously by mining.

Lithium is the buzz (word) these days, so a lot of investment is going in there.

The trend continued in 2023 if not at a faster pace so there is definitely interest.

If we do the entire value chain of lithium, I don’t see why it can’t surpass gold.

If you are processing it to those levels or much, much, more then definitely it will be a major export.

Annually, gold generates more than US$1 billion in export revenue, according to official statistics.

Lithium is a key component of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, hence the increase in lithium interest.

Zimbabwe’s lithium deposits are located in Arcadia, Goromonzi and Kamativi.

The leading lithium miners in Zimbabwe are Chinese firms Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, Sinomine Resource Group, and Chengxin Lithium Group.

The Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe says the country is expected to produce 54 500 tonnes of lithium in 2023, a 9% increase over last year’s 50 000 tonnes.

Zim once boasted of a second largest diamond deposit at Chiadzva... All was gobbled by the Chinese and left a 15 billion dollar story hanging. Now, here comes the lithium story, Chinese are back with all the machinery to dislodge the lithium out of the face of Zimbabwe. There are rumours of natural gas and oil, the Chinese are just on standby to grab deals at a song. The Dunderheads are ready to give them the green lights. Cry the beloved country. Botswana with the little diamond it has, her infrastructure has changed, her citizens are enjoying a relatively good standard of living, even us immigrant Zimboz we're benefiting

We should be processing our lithium and manufacturing products from this mineral not exporting raw materials...you see this is why we are moving backwards...our secondary industry is in shambles because we cannot utilize our resources but rather depend on other countries to do it for us...this dependency syndrome will get us nowhere...

Why is it Zimbabwe always think of exporting minerals instead of processing then and sell finished products
thrasher · 1 year ago
because we are broke man. factories are expensive and we do not have electricity to process them ourselves. we gave our numbers SA raw platinum they purify it keep the other imperities of the metal charge us and gives us the platinum pure for export.

Do you know that with a starting capital of USD500000 you can start manufacturing lithium batteries , not the best quality but batteries none the less which by the way can be used to make more products that we use in this country e.g lighting and many more products that can be exported. The truth is greed fuels the need to sell our raw material. Our government doesn't have a vision for the future. We have Technology universities that only serve the interests of the leaders of this country. Its easier to send our first lady on an expensive trip to Belarus so that she can have a weekend of sight seeing so that we can be told that she can make a deal to manufacture baby formula which by the way we already know how to make.It shows that the government knows that we are not training our academics well enough to make things ourselves. I'm pretty sure Belarus didn't go about hunting for this partnerships inorder to start their industry they just used what they had in their country. This country dispensation does not care about the future off this nation they would rather auction of everything and leave this country without a secure future.
