OpenCAPS United's Financial Struggles Resurface
CAPS United’s financial challenges which resulted in a chaotic 2022 season for the club, have resurfaced.
Soccer24 reported that CAPS United players initially refused to train on Thursday due to outstanding winning bonuses.
The players had reportedly been paid winning bonuses for only one of their three wins so far — the 2-0 win over Manica Diamonds on Matchday 1.
CAPS United also beat ZPC Kariba (1-0) and Black Rhinos (2-0) but winning bonuses for those games have not been paid.
On Thursday, club president Farai Jere held a crisis meeting with the players ahead of the top-of-the-table clash with FC Platinum after they refused to train.
A CAPS United player who spoke to Socer24 on condition of anonymity said Jere promised the players that the outstanding winning bonuses would be paid before the FC Platinum game. Said the player:
When the president (Jere) came to training on Thursday, it was because of a crisis meeting after he had heard we were refusing to train.
He (Jere) then promised us that our outstanding winning bonuses for the ZPC and Rhinos games would be paid ahead of the Platinum game.
The outstanding winning bonuses were not paid and nobody said anything to us. We just played the FC Platinum game and we are waiting to hear from the club’s leadership.
On 1 May 2022, CAPS United players threatened to boycott the league match against Cranborne Bullets over unpaid salaries and outstanding winning bonuses.
The players did not meet at the hotel in preparation for the match and instead grouped at a different location and arrived at the National Sports Stadium well after the kick-off time.
