Zimbabwean Households Ditch Fixed Telephone Services

The number of households using fixed telephone services in Zimbabwe has been falling over the past five years while corporates have increasingly been using the service.

This is contained in the results of the Consumer Satisfaction Survey conducted by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) between June and November 2022.

POTRAZ said a total number of 4 000 household consumers and 400 corporate consumers were engaged across the ten provinces of the country during the survey.

According to POTRAZ, consumers were asked if they had used fixed telephone services in the past 12 months to the time of the study. reads the report:

The engagement of TelOne fixed telephone was at 70% in the corporate segment, a significant jump from 53% recorded in the previous survey of 2018.

Bulawayo province ranked highest with 91% followed by Manicaland and Midlands provinces.

The household segment had engagement levels of 1%, a drop from the 2% recorded in the previous survey of 2018. Bulawayo had the highest engagement level of 12%.

In the corporate segment, Bulawayo province ranked highest with 91%, Manicaland had 88%, Gweru had 80%, Harare (73%), Matabeleland South (73%), Masvingo (68%), Mashonaland Central (60%), Matabeleland North (60%) Mashonaland West (42%), and Mashonaland East (34%).

In the household segment, Bulawayo also had the highest engagement levels of 12%, Harare had 3%, while Manicaland, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West, Matabeleland North, Masvingo, and Midlands had 1% each.

Mashonaland Central and Matabeleland South both had zero engagement levels in the household segment. POTRAZ said:

Looking at household consumers, the decline in usage was mostly attributed to increased penetration of mobile phones & data services which allowed consumers to communicate using voice services on the go.

Consumers in different areas also cited vandalism of fixed telephones infrastructure as present barriers to taking up the services.

Mobile phones are portable and can be carried anywhere. Also with the rise of smartphones, accessing the internet and social media is made much easier, providing easy access to information and communication tools.

Landlines are now obsolete, only corporates love them because the system can be centralized and controlled on the switch board. There's no privacy unlike the otg smartphones which can be used practically anywhere. Politicians particularly the fat cats have a phobia for smart fones, I once came upon an incident whereby an audience of a meeting was barred to enter with smart fones in the conference room. Smartphone is a cutting edge communication gadget as well as an PA.

These Tarrifs will not affect us but will definitely affect service providers. Econet must be very careful because at the end of the day they'll lose clients and customers like Telecel. I see Netone taking over the whole Country and expanding even more .This time I'm definitely throwing away that Econet line, why bother about continuous reviewes of tarrifs .Zimbabwe open for Business, I'm also going back to writing Telegrams and Letters.

Zimbabwe is very boring. This Country is the worst unhappiest Country. Hospitals are like Jails, imagine one big Central HospitalI were Male and female share the toilet (UBH).Imagine this, one gets injured and visit the local Clinic and pays US$10 fee and sees a Nurse who just write medical prescription which are not even available at the Clinic. You go buy medicine and X-ray you pay US$20 on the same and when you seek the Doctors opinion you add another US$15 ,again that Doctor writes another prescription which is never available on that Clinic. You go buy medicine, bandages etc and treat yourself.

That's true. I reported a faulty landline 2 weeks ago and up to now nothing has been done.. No wonder why people are shunning landlines.

How did they set it upbin the first place

People like the convenience of a landline. The problem is with the service provider who ignores or does not respond to faults reported or take a too long with the customer getting an alternative service, which, though a bit expensive, works more than 95% of the times. Its not that people do not want a fixed phone service, it is the service provider 's attitude which turn people off.
