Zimbabwe's Sean Williams Named ICC Men's Cricket Qualifier Player Of The Tournament

Zimbabwe Cricket Chevrons’ all-rounder, Sean Williams, has been named the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Cricket Qualifier Player of the Tournament for his exceptional performance, despite the team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup. Williams scored 600 runs during the tournament, including three centuries, which was a remarkable achievement and earned him the prestigious title.

The Chevrons failed to qualify for the World Cup despite topping the log standings in their qualifier group for some time.

During their last two Super Six matches, Zimbabwe needed two points to qualify for the Cricket World Cup, but they squandered both opportunities against an International Cricket Council full member and an associate side, just like in 2018.

In the recent match against Scotland, Zimbabwe needed to win, but they were bundled out for 41.1 overs, with Ryan Burl (83) and Wessley Madhevere (40) being the only batsmen to put up a fight.

The loss was a significant disappointment for the team and its fans, who had high hopes going into the match. Although Zimbabwe challenged Scotland to put up a formidable total on the board, they failed to chase it down, losing several key wickets early in their innings.

The loss left many fans questioning what went wrong for a team that had been performing well until this match. Despite the loss, Madhevere’s performance was a bright spot, as he played one of his better innings of late. This defeat adds to a long list of sporting heartbreaks for Zimbabwe, including many inflicted by the national senior soccer team, the Warriors.

Poor decision making. It was clear by moving to Queens they were jeopardising their chances of maintaining their winning streak and qualifying. They were supposed to prioritise qualifying for WORLD CUP. Noble as the idea was, what did the team gain? What did Zim Cricket and all the stakeholders gain? What did the fans gain? The tournament was clearly marked WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS and they decided to sacrifice qualification and playing on the main stage, rather choosing to make the Byo fans happy who could have still enjoyed all the games on Tv. Priorities, priorities, priorites.. Or perhaps the was political.interference in the decision making?

Allow me to rock your boat just a little bit,,Remember that they qualified in Bulawayo last year for the Australia T20 world cup. In addition, the Netherlands managed to win in Bulawayo and qualify just last year at T20 Australia Qualification tournament .A good cricket team must learn to adapt to different conditions,as a matter of fact the Chevrons in March or April this year, played against West Indies in Bulawayo for the purposes of acclimating. In addition,The Chevrons are used to playing in Different conditions. For example, just last year,If I remember properly,We beat Australia in Hobart and went on to beat Pakistan in Perth. The Chevrons are used to playing in different conditions and winning. Furthermore, The same Chevrons lost in 2018 in Harare to UAE,(Worldcup qualification,)YES YOU STILLREMEMBER. In conclusion,I don't think it's about the venue only, there are other factors which contributed to the poor performance. The Chevrons play ODI matches like it's T20,we want to hit boundaries all the time,we lake patience in building steady one run partnerships,we loose wickets quickly, bad opener, ageing squad,we struggled dealing with Srilankan spin bowlers, among others. The Chevrons are simple overrated, now we see just how bad they are.The Scotish and Dutch cricketers play County cricket ,which is at a higher levels than our players.

But remember, objective was to get into the World Cup, so why risk lose the momentum by changing venue. We beat West Indies comfortably at HSC. Queens is a slower wicket whiich favours spin bowlers, and it so happened that their first match got to be against some of the best spin bowlers in the world, who lived up to their reputation and demolished all the momentum and confidence Zim had gathered at HSC. End result, no world cup for Zim. Zim won all matches at HSC, and consecutively lost the first 2 at Queens.

Point of correction, the Zimbabweans qualifyed at the same venue, Queens in Bulawayo ( 2022 T20 Wc)just last year,2022,same venue ,same city.My point is there is nothing wrong with the venue, who knows maybe next year T20 world cup they will qualify in Bulawayo again. The Chevrons knew the conditions at Queens more than anybody else, they should have used them to their advantage, and qualify just like the Netherlands did.
