2023 Elections Were Free, Fair, Transparent And Credible, Mnangagwa Tells World Leaders

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday claimed that Zimbabwe’s Harmonised Elections held on 23 August 2023 were free and fair.

Addressing the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) in New York, United States, Mnangagwa also claimed that his government upholds the rule of law. He said:

Zimbabwe continues to entrench democracy, constitutionalism, good governance and the rule of law, following the recently held 2023 Harmonised General Elections.

I am pleased to highlight that our country enjoyed peace, before, during and after our free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

However, international election observers, including the SADC Election Observer Mission (SEOM), said the polls did not meet regional and international standards on democratic elections.

Mnangagwa also demanded the unconditional lifting of sanctions imposed on the country by Western powers.

The President described the sanctions as illegal and unilateral, adding that Zimbabwe has made economic progress in spite of the sanctions. He said:

Zimbabwe has been under illegal, unilateral economic sanctions for 23 years, imposed by some Western countries.

These sanctions were designed to subjugate the sovereign will of the Zimbabwean people. We, therefore, demand that the unjustified unilateral sanctions be unconditionally lifted, including those imposed on countries like Cuba.

We remain grateful for the support and solidarity of progressive countries in the comity of nations. In spite of these debilitating sanctions, the people of Zimbabwe have become masters of their own destiny.

This is anchored on a philosophy that as a people, we have the duty and responsibility of developing our country, using our own domestic resources.

What is the purpose of UNGA, and what are leaders of countries supposed to be presenting in their speeches? Is the meeting meant for sprucing up the image of a country by its leader to other countries ' leaders and the world? Is most of this not duplicating information all the world leaders know from their diplomats and representatives in the different countries? It is interesting to compare speeches from developed countries and some developing countries as they still talk on the basic building blocks of a nation year after year. Some of the speeches from developing countries are akin to a student filling in their own report and giving it to the parent or guardian when the parent or guardian would have visited the school a few days before and has been briefed on the report that is waiting for the school stamp.

There was nothing surprising or inspiring in His Excellency Advocate President ED Mnangagwa's speech at the United Nations General Assembly [ UNGA ]. He sang in his usual tune that elections were "free, fair, credible and transparent". The 23-24 August 2023 elections were the most unfree, unfair and incredible ever since 1980. The fact that SADG has seen it fit to have an extraordinary summit on this issue shows that ZImbabwe has a crisis. There are no sanctions imposed on ZImbabwe, but targeted on those with impunity who do not practise good human rights practices, good governance and the rule of law. The economy is struggling because of tribalism, nepotism and corruption at the highest levels. Zimbambwe must engage specific countries like, the EU, United States of America and United Kingdom.on the removal of sanctions instead of going to the United Nations. This is my story and I am sticking on it. [ THE BUSH LAWYER4CCC ].
