15 Miners Feared Dead At A Mine Owned By Mabvuku-Tafara MP Scott Sakupwanya

Fifteen miners are feared dead after a mineshaft collapsed at Redwing Mine which is owned by ZANU PF Member of Parliament (MP) for Mabvuku-Tafara Scott Sakupwanya. The mine is in Penhalonga, Zimbabwe.

The incident occurred in the early morning of Thursday, 4 January 2024. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the event without providing further details. Read the police report:

The ZRP is waiting for full information from Officer Commanding Manicaland Police province on the alleged eleven miners trapped at Redwing Mine, Penhalonga.

The police mentioned that they would provide more information at a later time.

Redwing Mine, managed by Sakupwanya’s company called BetterBrands, resumed its operations in March 2023. The mine had been temporarily closed by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) at the end of January 2023 due to more than 20 fatalities in 13 months.

Elton Makumbe, the mining director of Manicaland province said the decision to authorise the mine to resume operations was made based on the efforts made by the company to improve the situation in the area. The conditions for reopening included focusing on environmental protection, enhancing security against illegal miners, and ensuring the use of proper safety equipment.

Makumbe said it’s important to recognize that implementing these safety and environmental conditions takes time and effort. However, they can work on these aspects while continuing their mining operations and generating revenue. He added that the decision to allow the reopening of the mine considered various factors, including the economic impact on people’s livelihoods and the mine’s contribution to the country’s finances.

However, three civic groups, namely the Centre for Research and Development (CRD), Ziva Community Empowerment Trust, and Penhalonga Youth Development Ratepayers Trust, issued a joint statement claiming that 100 artisanal miners had lost their lives at Sakupwanya’s mine since 2020.

I think we have become so superstitious that we always treat an accident sekuchekeresa. Recently, a disused mine fell killing 2 people, so ndiani akachekeresa apa? Mugodhi hauna muridzi saka ndiani akachekeresa? Let's treat an accident as one and stop to think sevanhu vasina kudzidza, vanofunga kuti chose chaitika chakonzerwa nekuroiwa.

Nhai vakuru munofunga nes**** here? From the look of things don't you see that Scott is prioritizing profits over safety of his employees. If he instructs the miners to work when environmental safety experts had stopped him from operating till certain safety measures have been met hakusi kuchekeresa here ikoko? I wonder mubaba aani nx. Let me read my books.

we do not know the situation on the ground but we are allowing ourselves to be emotional and be guided by what we feel the owner represents and the past incidents on that mine zvakangooma hazvo only those on the ground know whether something tangible in terms of rescue efforts is being done and whether they was compliance with safety protocols at the mine

its our time to visualise the very things happening in our country Zimbabwe. We are the one's suffered the most ,we sacrifice our life by entering their lunatic minings inorder to raise our kids buh unfortunately this is inexplicable to our government becoz Sakupwanya's position has been approved now.You shall see maneuvering of his business by end of this January, he is not a good person, persecuted many innocent people, and he don't even care about ours like the ones who lost their life .

There is nothing anusing about those fifteen miners feared dead at Redwing Gold Mine. It usually happens when a high post has been acquired. It is meant to stabilize one who is in that position. It is natural in most black cultures. The owners of Redwing Gold Mine can not run away from it. [ NDICHO CHIVANHU ICHOCHO ] EHE ICHO !!!!!
