Zimbabwe Plans To Export 15 Million Cubic Litres Of Water To SA

The Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Anxious Masuka has reiterated the Government’s plans to sell water to South Africa, with an initial 15 million cubic litres set to be piped every month to Musina.

The pipeline is set to be constructed from Beitbridge’s massive Zhovhe Dam.

According to The Independent, Zhovhe Dam is the country’s 11th largest dam with a capacity of 133 million cubic litres.

Water is reportedly being released from the dam to recharge an alluvial aquifer in the lower Mzingwane River where water is abstracted from boreholes and well-points in the river and on the banks to feed a few but large commercial farms under citrus production. Said Masuka:

Zhovhe Dam is idle and not making any sense to villagers who should have plots under irrigation.

We must build that pipeline and we have identified 4 000 hectares of irrigable land. Some of the water will be exported to Musina.

We will soon meet with our South African counterparts to discuss the stages of the deal. Initially we will supply 15 million cubic litres of water.

We will also open up land for irrigation in Beitbridge where communal farmers are expected to benefit from the Zhovhe.

There are 4 000 ha of land we expect communal farmers to put under crops.

Masuka was addressing provincial ministers from some of the country’s 10 provinces he hosted to appeal for their support and management of agricultural projects.

South Africa already imports water from Lesotho, a tiny mountainous kingdom that has a large amount of water.

South Africa has a water deficit, particularly in Johannesburg which is located in the rain shadow of the Highlands.

this is not about water as we think bt rather forex income generating project. Dambudziko now comes kt that money will be pocketed by just a few individuals it will not help the staggering economy as proposed if the GVT can supply water to the SA no problem bt for why kana nhamo ichingorova. We may be heart broken kt why not supply Beitbridge as zvambotaurwa pamusoro apo we come back again kt pple doesn't pay bills

technically you cant channel water from Beitbridge to Byo. It makes sense at the same as it doesn't. We have unlimited load shedding in SA but SA exports electricity to Zimbabwe but also imports from Mozambique. Things that make sense theoretically does not apply physically.

Countries may have bilateral agreements that should be fulfilled. Thats why you sometimes see things that appear unsual whereas they are very normal. S.A cannot reneged on its agreement to supply electricity to Zimbabwe just because it no longer have enough for itself. It will simply export some from Moza to fulfil its obligations.

Why can't water be piped from BB to Bulawayo? If you have done geography and know of The Tennessee Valley Authority. you will know that water has been channelled over mountains, through mountains and via valleys Hundreds of kilometres in a complex interconnected system

Unoziva iwe ndakuona. There is nothing like cubic litres coz a litre is a litre. A measure of volume/amount of water is either litres or cubic meters

15million litres or 15million cubic METERS? Coz there's notjing like a cubic ka amana....

1mtr x 1mtr x 1mtr = 1 cubic mtr. 1 cubic mtr = 1000 ltrs.

So do u think water problems in Harare or Byo would be ended by water from Beitbridge, around 500km away? Mussina is barely 30 km from Beitbridge and Zhovhe dam has underutilised water just flowing away to the Indian Ocean via Limpopo River.

If you export 15 million cubic metres per month from a 133 million cubic metre dam, the dam will be dry in less than 9 months. Is it worth the effort and money to build the pipeline, unless if you are going to charge at bottled water rates? Beitbridge has been known to have perennial water challenges, have these been solved? How long will the pipeline take to build, considering that the one supposed to run from the Zambezi to Bulawayo is still more of a pipe dream, decades after it was started?

Water in a dam is different from water in a bucket which eventually become empty. 133 billion is the capacity to hold water when full and the rest will spill away without being used. Your pagging of 9 months is wrong because you are equating a dam to a bucket. There are always inflows in a dam unlike a bucket and albeit in 9 months significant rains would have been received. Also the water exports will relatively fetch more that at local even when purified and bottled. The water will however cheaper for the Mussina consumers as South African gvt is very good in subsidising for its people.

@Taoz, don't defend the indefensible. Since when did dams in Region 5 over spill? If Kariba either massive inflows fro. as far as Angola, DRC, Zambia last spilled 20 years ago and Mutirikwi 25 years ago what fat chance is there for a dam in semi desert of Beit Bridge? Geography wakaita yekunzwa nepahwindo

obvious there is negativity here. How come people in Beitbridge are going for months without taped water yet the government of thievery wants to export water really for what.....
People in Beitbridge are not paying their bills · 1 year ago
Exports are good for this country
Tapz · 1 year ago
Its not because there is shortage of water in Beitbridge but the Municipality sometimes reneged paying ZINWA so it sometimes cut off water to Mun of Beitbridge.
