Quest Financial Services Armed Robbery Suspect Shot Dead

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) asserts its unwavering commitment to human rights, even in the aftermath of a fatal shooting involving detectives during an incident on April 4, 2024.

This development coincides with heightened scrutiny of the ZRP’s purported “shoot to kill” approach in handling armed robbery cases.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum recently condemned the ZRP’s alleged “shoot to kill” policy in its response to armed robberies.

This condemnation followed concerns raised by social activists who pointed out that certain incidents bore resemblance to extrajudicial executions of suspects.

In the most recent shooting incident, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi reported that Blessing Sumbani Sithole (49), linked to a robbery at Quest Financial Services in Belgravia, Harare on February 25, 2024, was fatally shot in Southlea Park after brandishing a loaded firearm at detectives. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police statement released on 28th February 2024 in connection with a case of robbery which occurred on 25th February 2024 at Quest Financial Services in Belgravia, Harare where US$ 720 676.00, ZAR 10 500.00 and Euro 120.00 cash as well as a 7.65 mm CZ Vzor pistol and three laptops were stolen.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the death of one of the outstanding suspects in the robbery case, Blessing Sumbani Sithole (49), during a shooting incident which occurred on 04th April 2024 along Manyame River, Southlea Park, Harare.

On 04th April 2024, Detectives from CID, Harare received information that Blessing Sumbani Sithole was hiding at a house in Makondo Extension, Chiredzi.

The detectives tracked the suspect to Chiredzi where he was subsequently arrested. The arrest led to the recovery of a 0.38 Special Revolver with seven rounds and a Toyota Probox vehicle, registration number AGF 1832, which the suspect claimed to have bought for US$6 300 using his share of the loot.

The suspect led detectives to Manyame River in Southlea Park, Harare where he claimed to have hidden a 7.65mm CZ Vzor pistol which was stolen at Quest Financial Services in Belgravia during the trial.

Upon arrival at the scene, the suspect picked the pistol from a shrub and cocked it before aiming at the detectives who were escorting him.

Subsequently, the suspect was shot in the back and was rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital where he died upon admission. The detectives recovered the pistol which was loaded with four live rounds.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that it fully subscribes to human rights tenets and will respond appropriately to robbery scenes as determined by the prevailing situation on the ground.

Suspects involved in criminal acts are accordingly implored to duly comply with police orders and avoid clashes or confrontations with arresting details.

The Police applaud the public for supplying positive information which has assisted the police to account for armed robbery suspects throughout the country.

The public is urged to continue forwarding information regarding criminal activities to the National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197 or report at any nearest Police Station.

Why would you move around with a very dangerous criminal when he is unrestrained to the extent that he can pick up a gun, cock it then point it at the cops. Mapurisa haasisina njema here? The guy should be in cuffs and leg irons he should not have the luxury of freely walking and picking up stuff. The guy was executed by the cops kuti asataure kuti vamubira mari yake yaakabawo. How do you shoot someone who is pointing a gun at you in the back?

Zimbabwe is a lawful country full of people with unlawfulness in their minds. Who are we to judge that a suspected robber be killed before indications and investigations are over, even before being proven guilty by the courts? There are innocent people in our jail's and, in other cases, the real criminals have confessed when someone was already in jail for what they did. We are becoming poorer in all aspects of life because of putting too much faith in what we hear, we have become lawless by believing in words from other people in positions, from journalists etc. without considering what the laws and Constitution says.

Armed robbers must be eliminated

An exhaustive investigation needs to be done here. Was he surrounded by detectives, if he is said to have aimed at detectives, possibly those in front of him, and he was shot in the back? There were many possibilities which could have taken place, with the detectives being very close to the suspect and to each other, the bullet could have passed through the suspect and carry on to injure or kill a detective in front of the suspect, also, since it is said the suspect had cocked the weapon, he would have pressed the trigger split seconds faster than the detective behind him after hearing of a gun being cocked behind him. There was also the grave danger of the bullet from the detective behind passing through the suspect and hitting the loaded and cocked gun.

Detectives take it personal with armed robbers , it's war to them .Some lost their colleagues to these animals so they prefer to eliminate their opponents than for them to hand them to the courts. Armed robber rinoenda Kuma indications in leg irons and handcuffs , vanokupa kamukana ke fake to flee or to fight wobva wangonzi akaita open fire at detectives, it's minus one strategy

We applaud the shoot to kill policy by the ZRP. Police officers do not have the leisure to negotiate or try to figure out what an armed robber is going to do next. The NGOs can go to hell.Who is going to investigate what? Whatever account of what happened as written by the CID officers is final. Nonsense mhani😁😁😁

On this one no one will listen to theBIG BOYS(Human rights activists),, how can an officer have time to think when a robber is holding/brandishing a gun,, its to dangerous. Kill them all
Anonymous · 1 year ago
These human rights activists expect police to sit down with the robber and have a full discussion, maybe a psychiatrist can come, then action can be taken. I don't see the same rules apply to the robbers. If they brandish a weapon at police, then there is no sympathy. These activists want more rights for criminals that the victims.

Why is it that most of these suspects die after arrest . why was he not cuffed . a suspect doesnt handle the evidence . he points it out while cuffed. A few thousand dollars is a lot of money for a Zim gvt employee. and a life changing sum for an average civilian. A lot of these officers are getting rich on a scanty salary , a lot of the stuff they confiscate from criminals don't make it to the evidence chambers .
