Starlink Shutting Down Internet Services in Zimbabwe, Following Government Directive

Starlink is shutting down its services in Zimbabwe. Technology publication, Techzim, has reported that people using Starlink received an email today telling them the Zimbabwean  government has demanded that the service be shut down.

Here’s a screenshot of the email they received from Starlink:

Techzim

You are currently using Starlink in an unauthorised territory, As a result. Starlink has been directed by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) to disable your service.

Latest Samsung A06 128GB, 4GB now available: $106

To order, WhatsApp:  wa.me/263715068543

We will continue to work with POTRAZ to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals to turn on Starlink services in Zimbabwe as soon as possible. We encourage you to contact POTRAZ at the.regulator@potraz.gov.zw or +263 242 333032 to communicate your support for Starlink to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals in Zimbabwe.

As described In your Terms of Service, Starlink does not guarantee when or where its Mobile or Mobile Priority Services Plans will be available. Use of such services Is dependent on many factors, including obtaining or maintaining the necessary regulatory approvals which are subject to change.

You may pause service and billing by following the Instructions here or continue service and use your Starlink service in an area we currently serve (see map here), If you opt to pause service, you can reach out to support and we will issue a service credit for any remainder of the current billing period.

As soon as we receive regulatory approvals turn on Starlink services In Zimbabwe, we will let you know.

The Starlink team

According to the Techzim report, Starlink has about an estimated 5,000 users of the service in the country.

In February, the telecoms regulator in Zimbabwe POTRAZ, said that while Starlink had expressed interest in getting a license to  operate in Zimbabwe, it had actually not applied for one. Users of the service were therefore essentially breaking the law.

Last month, reports suggested that government was holding meetings with officials from Starlink over licensing of the service in Zimbabwe.

Pindula spoke to one user familiar with the situation who commented on how such a shut down works:

So what this means is that Starlink are not able to offer service to their customers in Zimbabwe.

If someome who has a Starlink kit travels to Zimbabwe, Starlink are not in a position to offer service.

If the user goes somewhere else, like any of the countries they’re registered in (Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Eswatini, Rwanda, Nigeria, Kenya, etc) or any other country that they’re not banned in (Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Angola, etc) then the device will work

Zimbabwean users are not the first to receive such a notice from Starlink. Reports last month suggest users in DRC also had their Starlink terminals shut down in similar circumstances.

Starlink offers the cheapest means to communicate to the internet in Zimbabwe. At roughly $38 a month, its users get unlimited access to the internet.

Sounds like a fake story generated by one of the struggling Internet Acess Providers. Starlink has never sold decoders to/ in Zimbabwe. Some Zimbabweans have a paid minimal fees to register once it becomes available in the country. Anyone can still do so.

STARLINK kits do not have in built GPS for starters so the only way to track users could via info from their prepaid cards And also there several people who do field work we assist them get kits to connect rural.schools. Starlink is here to say.

Because some fat cat is not benefiting that is why they don’t want starlink to operate
Anonymous · 10 months ago
@ Anonymous1 point of correction. I see you have not setup Starlink before and assume that it is like Multichkice decoder that can pick up signal without the Service provider knowing where it it. 1.) Starlink has G.P.S accurate to 2m built in to its devices. When you activate it, it not only can tell which Country you are in, but your exact address, hence when you have a Standard Plan, it cannot work in Zim before you activate Regional Roaming.

I have been buying data from tel one since November and they can't deliver anything. They are not capable of providing services to the nation of Zimbabwe and are useless. We cannot function in 2024 when they cannot deliver 10mb of speed. When you complain to them they say Fibre is coming soon, when fibre was introduced and rolled out 10 years ago and the world is moving ahead with starlink then they want to bully it out with anti- competition cowardice tendencies. If zPORTAZ doesn't sharpen it's brains and move with the pace of the world Telone will go obsolete like landlines and call boxes. Let starlink in as soon or find ways to work with them cause however way you are going to lose.

No ... Zimbabwe does not seem to be open for Starlink business ... But I support starlinks decision to suspend services rather than double the charge to the normal person so they can pay the bribes demanded by the fat politicians

if starlink is allowed to operate in Zim it will price out all of these expensive local ISPs out of the data service market which will result in them losing a huge chunk of their revenue thereby forcing them to cut more jobs which equals to higher unemployment for the country, higher unemployment equal more civil unrest and more chances of revolting against the current establishment, the Zimbabwean government realises this

This story is a FAKE Zimbabwe propoganda story. Starlink, just like Multichoice decoders, can operate in any country if you pick their signal up. They (Starlink and Multichoice) do not worry where you are picking their signal from. They are picking it up from space - an area that is not controlled by any country. Multichoice has a decoder that allows you to.pick up their satellite signal whether you pay in Kenya and receive in South Africa. Starlink asks for a monthly fee for you to connect to their 'WiFi' which is space situated, not on/in anybody territory. So the story is a scary FAKE story.
