Civil Servants' Salary Review Hinges On Economic Performance - Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa stated that civil servants’ salaries will be adjusted to their satisfaction once the economy improves.

Since October 2018, civil servants have persistently advocated for the reinstatement of their salaries, initially aiming for up to US$540 for the lowest-paid worker and subsequently raising their demand to US$840.

However, during the main 2024 Independence Day celebrations at Murambinda B High School in Murambinda, Buhera District, Manicaland Province, President Mnangagwa asserted that civil servants’ salaries would align with the economy’s performance. He said:

The welfare of our civil servants will continue to be reviewed in line with economic sustainability.

The majority of civil servants get US$320 per month, before tax and extortionate bank charges, and part of the salary is paid in ZiG.

Mnangagwa’s remarks that the welfare of government employees would be assessed based on economic fundamentals will likely further dampen the spirit of civil servants who have been pushing for a review of their conditions of service since October 2018.

Earlier this week, the Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions’ (ZCPTSU) Secretary General David Dzatsunga was quoted by  TellZim News, as saying civil servants prefer the USD as acceptance of the ZiG would be based on its performance.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) launched ZiG on 05 April to stabilise the volatile exchange rate.

While businesses rushed to reconfigure their system to adapt to the ZiG, one of the biggest concerns is whether it will create a parallel currency market — one of the biggest threats to exchange rate stability.

Economic performance is government performance. Government has the power to improve the life of civil servants through its performance which hinges on government policies.
Long time the civil servants salaries were in comparison with industrial labourers it was just a set margin that a shift worker can at least come close to a lower government employees through a shift allowance, But when they get overtime at shift they'd be at par at times surpasses depending on the times and advantage of a factory labourer is that, he was weekly paid and so with overtime it kept him muted, the idea is that racecourse the neck a neck drove the economy civil servants salaries were pegged on that datum line but now, majority of firms have since been redundant others have closed shop, so the masses are in the streets so the question is what criteria are the Civil servant using to peg salaries besides the usual affecting all of us thats basket and transport, they are even graced to have access to ****s mortgages, funeral polices, insurance, medical aid, etc, what of a laid of worker, no pension, meagre earnings from the now bloated ngwavhangwavharing, the civil servant should just be sincere the government is trying all the best it can to ratify embedding situations to all Zimbabweans Not them alone As we speak many sleep without food as there were no harvests this season, drought ht elnino All that are upon us all

opposing this current govt , being bitter about it will not soleve any problem. we are going to be with it and under it for the next 4-5 yrs. why cant we learn from south africa, they differ politically but they dont advocate for the demise of its economy. On that they support each other. Opposition does not mean you oppose everything. If you do that you are no different from the devil. There is no way the devil can support God. What is good is good and must be supported.

how did he cause that. l thot chake was is land reform
Anonymous · 11 months ago
The 50 000 Zim dollar payouts amounted to US 215 million only. Some of the politicians you defend daily here are billionaires and their billions are stashed outside Zimbabwe, being invested by the beneficiary countries to grow their economies, i bet every War veteran who received that payout spent their money inside Zim, promoting the growth of the Zim economy, BESIDES, 215 million is nothing when compared to million dollar tenders that never where.

Tsvangirai pushed the war veterans to demand compensation immediately citing that those in power were enjoying the fruits of the liberation struggle yet some veterans had received nothing since 1980 regardless of their immense contributions during the liberation struggle. The move was meant to be a surprise attack on the government thus sowing divisions amongst patriots. He encouraged them to grab the land, something Bob had strongly brushed aside knowing that it could result in some instability. When Rg recieved the intelligence he had to act out of impulse. It wasn't just meant for power retention. Restoration of order was important. When Tsvangi lost the plot he then switched sides.
