ZDERA Is Not A Sanction, And Has Never Been Invoked - US Embassy

The United States Embassy in Zimbabwe says the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZDERA) is a law and not a sanction.

This contradicts the ZANU PF-led government’s decades-long assertion that “illegal sanctions” imposed on Zimbabwe by the United States of America have devastated the economy and caused immense suffering for the citizens.

In a statement shared on its X page, the U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe said that it has never had to invoke ZDERA to oppose international financial institutions’ loans or debt restructuring for Zimbabwe. It said:

Is ZDERA a sanction? Why was it not removed?

The Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZDERA) has not changed.  ZDERA is a legislative act and is not a sanction.

The United States has never had to invoke ZDERA to oppose international financial institutions’ loans or debt restructuring for Zimbabwe.

ZDERA outlines a clear roadmap for the United States to support the Government of Zimbabwe’s access to concessional financing and possible debt restructuring, but this could only happen once the Government of Zimbabwe has paid its outstanding debt arrears to the international community.

This is why the AfDB-facilitated dialogue is so important. The issues of democracy, governance, economic reform, and land reform addressed in that dialogue relate to many of the issues cited in ZDERA.

The Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act Of 2001 was passed and ratified by the U.S. Congress purportedly to provide for a transition to democracy and to promote economic recovery in Zimbabwe.

people tend to forget than industrialization is the vital key to production and exportation, we have the highest unemployment rate and our economy is run by informal business while chikorokoza is called mining. we don't have well established mines, many of them are claims where people are working under dangerous environments and even the so called Chinese companies are forcing our fellow brothers to work on short term contracts of as short as 3months and you call it good governance. we are been killed by poor governance not sanctions, real sanctions are those that were put on the Rhodesian government, they prohibited the gvmnt from trading with Europe and oil was one of the most basic commodity that Smith was banned from getting it from Europe, but he managed to outsmart them and even pushed the economy to a greater heights

Zimbabwe has no sanctions indeed zdera are not sanctions. After 2001 IMF and the world bank would still give us ****s and we ended up having outstanding debts. We can be lend by any institution but we owe them a lot. Some people think failure to have a working industry and poor currency is the west's fault, never. Zimbabwe is allowed to trade with anyone but we just chose China and Russia because of their hand in the liberation struggle. We can still change states to trade with and the 51/49 still drives investors away.

We must not hide behind sanctions for our failures. We have the land but no tangible productions hunger year in year out. Those given pieces of land.have failed us.We used to be great tobacco farmers earning the country millions of foreign currency Now ?????. Tiripapi ? let's look into ourselves and stop blaming other countries for our failures. We have very good plans but no one to implement them just look at how Zig is being managed. No Zig in circulation but RBZ is busy issuing statements one after another.Put Zig now so that farmers can start preparing for the next season. Very soon we will be saying shortage of Zig is being caused by sanctions.Lets use our own currency and stop all this mult-currency scenario. Have confidence in your principles and stick to Zig kuti zvifambe like any other country in our region they have been using their own currencies since independence.

America is being clear on this issue of sanctions and this issue of IMF and other reputable international lenders are owed a lot of money by our government and even our neighbors are owed by our government, Eskom is owed millions and in Mozambique also millions of dollars in electricity deals, Biti once said it after the pandemic, that the government was supposed to share the 1billion for covid funds in paying debts especially the IMF but Mthuvi refused and converted the whole funding to worthless billions of RTGs and later on announced that the whole 1b was wiped by inflection

Sorry maningi, USA haina basa nekupondwa kwevanhu wena, ndiyo nyika yemhondi manje iya, Vietnam, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Panama, Syria, not to mention Hiroshima and Nagasaki pa Japan apo. Don't be fooled that this is about human rights, Mugabe killed more than 20000 Ndebeles during gukurahindi and they did not sanction him then, ask yourself why. Israel has been butchering Palestinians for 76 years now and has the full support of the US gvt up to this day. When you talk of USA and human rights it all about them not observing any human rights not as defenders. Zanupf is a monster and has been from its formation but was only sanctioned after threatening American interests by implementing the land reform. Read the initial ZDERA, it's all there

Americans really think Zimbabweans are du.mb. Only the most gullible will believe this nonsense. Zidera is a very serious sanction, this information is allover the internet and available at the click of a button.

Anonymous asks a pertinent question. I posit another one , if Zimbabwe is on US imposed sanctions, How is it that many big Zanu owned companies do business with American companies? Example , ana FBC , CBZ, for the longest time have always offered Visa and Mastercard services? How? It's not just that there are many other examples. Once I remember Strive complaining about sanctions, but this guy does business with mostly Western based companies , we have all seen the headlines. Liquid is an official distributer or partner for many services and products of American companies , like AWS and Google Cloud Services. Yet Huawei is banned from buying computer chips from Intel because of REAL sanctions. Some one explain please?????

Why not just post a copy ye ZIDERA vanhu vozviverengera vega. There is no need to explain the law, takadzidza isu, toverenga toga n we will decide wether we were under sankishens or not.Ma international banks are afraid to do business with Zimbabwe after Standard Bank was fined mari refu for facilitating Zimbabwe transactions.Zimbabwe now only has a few Correspondent banks okuti our local banks vaita ma international transactions. Call them restrictive measures or whatever but the effect is the same.Saka hatingogara pasi tochema, we take our gold to Dubai ma Arabs wanibhadhara USD cash kumusika wavo we gold.

😂😂😂 what a load of crap being spewed by the self appointed world prefect 😂😂......Crooked Joe is now at the bottom of the barrel looking for votes using his foreign policy because he has bombed at the domestic front.....We are all aware of American tactics now and it is only those with a severe case of Stockholm syndrome who will believe such lies...The effects of sanctions are everywhere and one only needs to look at the lack of monetization of internet activities and the lack of financial services in Zim as an example of how Sanctions have affected Zim...Even the self appointed poster child of mistreatment by the regime Strive has commented on how Sanctions have affected Zim thereby confirming their presence... This is all a ploy to get Joe Biden and his acolytes Kamala Harris and Alexandria Ocassio Cortez back into office but it won't work... Bulwark of People United and Free

Americans have a history of lying to plunder people’s resources like in Iraq and Lybia and now those countries are in ruins …. What I’m saying is that how come now they are explaining zdera after 10 years and come on the radio explaining sanctions ., we need to be very careful .. Lithium is a big commodity and we have a lot of it .. America can see us doing business other counties and maybe they want a piece of the cake and that’s why they decide to post all of these things all of a sudden … let’s be careful as Zimbabwe and guard our resources

Russia is an example of a country under real sanctions. However, they have enough gold and other precious minerals which they are looting in African countries who have corrupt leaders and **** followers. The effects of sanctions on Russia is not felt and are never crying.

Thank you US Embassy for enlightening us
Anonymous · 11 months ago
You are daft if this is what you call enlighting. WHat is the difference between a sanction and a law? I suppose US know how foolish some Zimbabweans are that they can't tell that for a sanction to be effective , it has to be a law.
