Church Bishop Calls For Sex Education In Churches

Bishop Rocky Moyo, the president of the Council of Churches in Africa, has urged the church, particularly traditional churches, to discuss sex issues, rather than leave the youth and teenagers at the mercy of misleading information from the internet.

Moyo said newspapers are full of reports about teenage pregnancies and teenagers who have joined the sex work industry, and this is partly attributable to the church’s failure to discuss sex issues. Moyo said (via B-Metro):

I’m an avid newspaper reader, so I keep up to date with current affairs. One issue that has hit me hard is the issue of teenagers falling pregnant, after that, they stop coming to church and some adopt delinquent behaviours and join the sex work industry.

In some cases, after the teen falls pregnant, she drops out of school. Some youths desert their families while some stop attending church services as they would be depressed and ashamed of being labelled all sorts of names.

Some of the church members are the reason behind the depression as they are quick to accuse the girl of being promiscuous, but they do not blame the boy who would have impregnated the girl.

Moyo said churches should have literature on sex that is specifically tailored for teenagers as this will help them make informed decisions rather than letting them rely on internet information.

A Brethren in Christ Church (BICC) reverend who chose not to be named told B-Metro that the issue of sex is rarely discussed at their church. Said the cleric:

At our church, the issue of sex is rarely discussed and is discussed at Youth camps only and that is once or twice a year.

Sadly, some of the youths do not attend camps and they are left at the mercy of wrong information.

Meanwhile, Moyo said some churches find it difficult to discuss the issue as parents and their children would be in the same room.

Zimbabwe’s teenage pregnancy rate stands at approximately 22%, placing the country at position 28 out of 54 on UNICEF’s early childbearing list.

Teenage pregnancy has significant psycho-social, economic, development, and health costs.

Let's not blame some organization for the mischievous of other teenagers, church is a place of worship were man come together to fellowship and be taught spiritual and moral values. Parents should teach their children at home, if you fail to control your child at your own house do you think another person will dare try to do so if as a parent you fail to control your child. We welcome everyone at church but it's not always the pastor duty to teach your child how to behave. If as a parent you not strict with your child and you expect I as a pastor to control your child. Something's they don't need prayer of deliverance but parents should teach their children how to behave. As a parent you allow your child to dress naked while coming to church, some parents will be walking side by side with their child wearing see through dresses coming to church. Mwana ava na Mai vake kumba vakamtarisa achibunda Mumba asina kufeka zvakanaka then you come to church you expect I as a pastor to tell your child to be presentable aren't you failing as a parent. Some parents fail to monitor their children 24/7 or 7days per week then you expect a pastor to monitor your child whom they see once or twice per week for church service. Some things they need logic not spirituality. Parents who fail to tell their child not to unzip their trousers everyway or if it's a girl to open their legs everywhere then you expect I as a pastor to tell your child how to unzip and undressed. thus a responsibility as a parent to teach your child that I teach them spirituality and moral values after the parent has done their part. Parents stand on your positions and do what you have to as a parent then when it comes to church we give them understanding and emphasis from what they already know. don't blame us pastors can't teach your child to pray and how to dress

Well said. We should have a full time session with these ama2k because mmm we are sick and tired of losing innocent souls day in and day out. May God grant us an opportunity to teach them for sure.

Proverbs 22:15 ****ishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. Proverbs 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

Well said bishop Rocky. it's true some of teenagers do not attend church services wen they face this situation. But our ama 2k is different, wen you tell them, they don't listen. When she is pregnant she will then come and say , "I'm sorry".

I would agree since a church is a place one would seek comfort advice and deliverance..teaching the youth about **** about advantages and disadvantages at a young age is ok..the danger is that misnformation

what **** education does the bishop want taught to the youth which surpasses teaching one to look after themselves and be prepared for a marriage acceptable to the church? that is what the churches we were born into have always taught! may be he means the modern churches, some which have perverts who preach prosperity for the flesh and do not know the link between the spirit and the flesh.
