ZESA Encourages Customers To Embrace Net Metering

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of the country’s power utility ZESA Holdings, has called on its customers with solar systems to consider exporting their excess energy into the grid through net metering.

This appeal comes at a time when Zimbabwe is experiencing a serious power crisis, with depressed generation at the country’s major power stations – Kariba and Hwange.

Kariba South Power Station, with an installed capacity of 1,050MW, is currently producing only 292MW due to low water levels at Lake Kariba.

Hwange Power Station’s ageing Units 1 to 6 are generating a fraction of their capacity, leaving the newly commissioned Units 7 and 8 to produce the bulk of the country’s locally-generated electricity.

On July 20th, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), another ZESA Holdings subsidiary, reported that the total generation from Hwange Power Station was 979MW, while Kariba contributed 292MW.

In its statement, ZETDC urged customers with solar systems on their premises to contact its Client Service Centre or dial 704 to get more information on the net metering programme. ZETDC said:

Zimbabwe is facing depressed power generation due to low water levels at Kariba Power Station.
Customers with solar systems are encouraged to export the excess energy into the grid through Net Metering.

Net metering is a policy that allows customers who generate their electricity from solar or other renewable energy sources to feed the excess electricity they generate back into the grid and receive credits on their electricity bills.

Here’s how net metering typically works:

  • The customer installs a renewable energy system, such as solar panels, that is connected to the local utility’s electrical grid.
  • When the customer’s renewable energy system generates more electricity than the customer is using, the excess electricity is sent back into the utility’s grid. Conversely, when the customer’s electricity needs exceed the amount being generated, the customer draws electricity from the grid.
  • The utility tracks both the electricity the customer draws from the grid and the excess electricity the customer sends back to the grid. The difference between these two amounts is the customer’s “net” electricity usage, which is what the customer is billed for.
  • For the excess electricity the customer sends to the grid, the utility provides the customer with a credit on their electricity bill, usually at the full retail rate. These credits can then be used to offset the customer’s electricity costs when they are drawing from the grid.

The goal of net metering is to support the growth of distributed renewable energy generation and reduce the strain on the electrical grid by empowering customers to generate their own clean electricity.

What happened to the solar electricity generating project, which was supposed to start in Gwanda? The funDs were supplied, then next report says the money ain't there. I

ZESA should stop charging USD800 for the met metering connection. I would want to do net metering but that charge is ridiculous and I cannot afford it. If I had the money, I would rather invest that money in buying more solar panels. ZESA can recover the costs from savings in power imports. Connect those with relevant equipment for free to encourage users to switch to net metering. Also remove taxes and duties on solar panels batteries and components used to assemble panels and batteries. I was surprised that Govt charges duty on solar pannel/battery components needed for local assembly but not on a fully assembled panel/battery. Does that make sense?

behold ! more excrement from zesa. i find it hard to believe that adults, grown men and women who have been to school , would actually sit around a boardroom table and come up with this garbage ... their parents have obviously wasted a lot of money on their education and must be very disappointed with their offspring

Net metering actually makes a lot of sense, however, the infrastructure and facilities in zim (or lack thereof to be more accurate) do not facilitate such a thing. This system works well in first world countries but that's just it, zim is not a first world country you can't even classify us as a developing country because the only thing developing is nepotism, cronyism and corruption. Furthermore given our governments penchant for the ludicrous its only a matter of time before they turn around and declare that they actually own the electricity generated by the sun and as such you should be paying them and be damned about your investment. Imagine how many solar panels can be installed for the cost of one top of the range vehicle. Zesa is attempting to pass the buck on to the consumer and in doing so enrich the corrupt corridors of power. A corrupt tender will be put out for these net meters which will be overvalued and cost the tax payer millions, the consumer will then be coerced into the program by way of mandate, they will then have to pay exorbitant amounts of money to install the meters on to their systems all the while zesa will continue to degrade, step in the government which will then commandeer and regulate all power output meaning that even though you have your own solar system, installed at your own expense, the government will then tell you that you can not use that power because it is needed to feed the national grid. A word to the wise, sleep with dogs and you might wake up with flees.

taxes must go !! · 8 months ago
remove ALL duites / taxes /VAT on all solar panels, batteries and inverters, and once that is done maybe i will think about it , remove ALL taxes on ALL electrical solar power components !!

I personally wouldnt risk having my whole home system destroyed by harnessing it to Zesa's rotten, obsolete system inoputika everyday . my appliances will be destroyed & even my kids killed.

Lovely, with Zimbabwe’s sunshine so much deficit can replenished, if every household has solar panels affixed with such mechanism where upon charging your solar batteries,( which usually are used at night the most,) once abated with the daily charge the excess charging is released into the grid through yet another mechanism to bolster frequencies so that that energy's effect is felt easily on the grid, hey I'm no fundi, I speak throughwired just simple study the way we collect water when ever it rains, much of your collection can be found wanting on various activities Zesa should help people, communities centre, churches schools to harness solar power and embrace this move to alleviate power shortages in future
