Duma Boko Sworn In As Botswana's 6th President

Duma Boko (54) was officially sworn in as the 6th President of Botswana on Friday by Chief Justice Terrence Rannowane at the High Court.

The ceremony took place three days after Boko’s opposition coalition, the Umbrella for Democratic Change, won the parliamentary elections.

Boko, a human rights lawyer, delivered an acceptance speech and held a press briefing that was broadcast live on state television.

In his address, he highlighted some key campaign promises, including plans to more than double the minimum wage to P4,000 ($300) and to introduce universal health insurance.

Boko also said he was committed to attracting investors and strengthening relationships with mining companies in Botswana.

He emphasized the need to diversify the country’s diamond-dependent economy, a step seen as essential for stabilising the nation’s finances.

Earlier that day, outgoing President Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded defeat after the overnight results from Wednesday’s general election showed that his party did not win enough seats to form a government.

The BDP has been in power since Botswana gained independence in 1966. The defeat was a huge setback for Masisi, 63, who had been confident about securing a second term after being elected in 2018. Said Masisi:

We got it wrong big time in the eyes of the people. We were really convinced of our message. But every indication, by any measure, is that there’s no way that I can pretend that we’re going to form a government.

I will respectfully step aside and participate in a smooth and transparent transition process ahead of the inauguration.

Mogweetsi MASISI was rejected by Batswana because he wanted to sell Botswana to the Sshonas, and their ZANU. Anyone who hobnobs with the Sshona will be rejected by his people. How can you even dare to dream of a no passports policy for Sshonas? Do you know how many these Gukurahundis are in this region? Batswana are almost the equivalent of the Matebeleland people by population. They were going to be overrun by these Gukurahundi people. MASISI is a fool, to agree with the Butcher of Matebeleland thug!

You must be a product of the Zanu Pf Herbert Chitepo School Of Ideology, from the way you think. Your tribalism is not welcome in Botswana.
Anonymous · 3 months ago
Botswana always supported ZAPU, right from the 1950s. They supported Joshua Nkomo. Botswana hatred for ZANU is well documented. It was Botswana and SA that welcomed Matebele people fleeing from Gukurawundi. Even Nkomo himself escaped to Botswana, when ZANU Shona Goons were after his life in Phelandaba and Matseamhlophe. Nothing tribalistic about this. It's the truth. Nothing but the truth.

All countries that are successful, progressing, and truly democratic in this region are not dominated by ZANU and it's ****. ZANU AND SHONA - what a terrible combination!!

As much as we may blame the party ruling Zimbabweans for forcing themselves onto the electorate , the bottom line is that Zimbabwe has gotten to a point where we can liken it to a very sick person who is no longer able to do things for himself and the ruling part is now legally exploiting that weakness. In a stark contrast to Zimbabwe, Botswana is a civilized and independent country. The people of Botswana educated and allowed to express themselves without fear of party militia and assassins, they have a professional police force ranked in the top 5 in Africa, they have an army that is a national army not a security company for the ruling party. On the other hand , we have Zimbabwe, hated by all its neighbours , This hatred is not an imagination, it is real .The hatred stems from the fact that the current crop of youthful Zimbabweans crossing borders are uneducated, brought up as barbarians in the 21st century and they make it hard for anyone to like them for no reason. These are people who can kill someone for not attending a political party meeting, these are people who can travel hundreds of kilometres for a party T shirt and a plate of food, these are youths who will sit in the sun at a rally clap, sing and dance just for an opportunity to be on the bus, they are ready to kill anyone who preaches change, these are the same youths where the ruling party get its support from, get its votes from, get its mandate to rule from.
