Tshabangu Backs Extended Presidential Term For Mnangagwa

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) self-styled interim secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu said he was not opposed to President Emmerson Mnangagwa extending his stay in power beyond 2028, at the end of his second and final term.

Tshabangu assumed control of CCC soon after the 2023 general elections, with support from Parliament and the courts, which legitimized his leadership of the party.

During a tour of Mnangagwa’s Pricabe Farm in Kwekwe on Sunday, Tshabangu said that if Mnangagwa’s extended stay in power has the support of Zimbabweans, it should be accepted. He said:

If our presence here improves your stay in power, and that makes the people of Zimbabwe happy, then let it be.

Tshabangu, who was introduced as the leader of the opposition in Parliament, was given a prominent seat at the event, where he proudly declared, “I am so proud to represent the opposition.”

Once a relative unknown in late 2023, Tshabangu swiftly rose to prominence by declaring himself the Secretary General of the CCC party shortly after the elections.

His self-appointed position came at a time when the party lacked clearly defined roles, and he capitalized on this void.

Tshabangu made waves by writing letters to the Speaker of Parliament, recalling over a hundred CCC MPs, councillors, and senators, a move that was swiftly executed despite protests from within the party.

He also filled proportional representation vacancies with his handpicked appointees. However, he largely failed to field candidates in by-elections for contested seats, which allowed ZANU PF to claim victories and expand its parliamentary majority.

In a further controversial move, he appointed himself as a senator for Matabeleland North.

It now appears that Tshabangu is keen to avoid the 2028 elections, which would likely mark the end of his brief political ascent.

He seems prepared to support ZANU PF MPs’ push to extend the current parliamentary term until at least 2030.

This contentious proposal would require a national referendum and constitutional amendments, as per legal experts.

As reported by ZimLive, the opposition lawmakers present at Mnangagwa’s farm tour were Thokozani Khupe, Bridget Nyandoro, Kucaca Phulu, Susan Matsunga, Nonhlanhla Mlotshwa, Juliana Makuvire, Charles Moyo, Maxwell Mdhluli, Samukeliso Maseko, and Otilia Sibanda.

From its own history ZANU has never practised good governance and neither has it respected its own constitution, notice all its party succession elections are mired in blood...

What sort of madness is this, where have you ever heard such bulłsh!t being spilled. What sort of opposition encourages changing the constitution on a whim just to extend the incumbent strsngehold on power. This country sometimes is too much, too many clowns up in the upper echelons of power.

Zimbabweans were united in fighting Whites in Rhodesia, until ZANU was formed. ZAPU had support all over country. Shona people gave Joshua Nkomo the name Chibwechiteza in the 1960s. They used to lift him high up. That was when there was no ZANU. Unfortunately, when ZANU started using tribalism in order to break Shona support for Nkomo, the **** fell for the trap. The rest is history. Nkomo was a national leader. But Mugabe and ZANU worked hard using Ndebele hate, to isolate him to Matebeleland and reduced him to a tribal leader. That is why his statue is in Bulawayo, not in the Capital City Harare. HAD **** stood firm, and not allowed ZANU and Mugabe to play tribal politics with his Gukurawundi, a strong ZAPU would have kept ZANU in abeyance. ZANU would have never grown to become as strong as it us today. Zimbabwe would have been all the better for it.

Ummm I'm not exactly thrilled by these Liberation parties. Honestly I just want all of them to disappear from the picture but I do agree on the Nkomo part. His death came at the worst time possible, just as the country descended into chaos, I think had he been alive in the 2000s all the mess that happened during that era wouldn't have taken place.

they are correct. You need to build your own political parties.Stop meddling in their political parties.MDC and CCC was a SHonA project,You need to build your own parties as Southerners.Develop your dilapidated City and leave izintozeHarare alone.Zenzeleni okwenu.Learn from the Afrikaners in Western Cape, you will not see Afrikaners in umkonto wesizwe in KZN,they build their own FF+ in Capetown. They will continue to call you names because you are crossing the line, into their territory.

That benefits no one and the country will go nowhere because we cannot work together. Tshabangu is a reflection of the corruption in the flesh of the nation. Everyone is happy to receive a small benefit at the large cost of everyone else. FF+ and MK is like a cat and dog put in a room and told to work out their differences. They will always fight each other.

A referendum is like an election, right?
Corruptmore Looto · 1 month ago
Yahh a referendum is a completely different animal from the elections that they readily rig. No constituencies, no parties, just yes or no and we will also have the support of those in Zanu PF who don't want to see an extension, so yeah it will be very difficult for him to succeed.

For your info, Shonaz are numerical powerful but political weak, that's the problem we have in Zimbabwe. Tribalism does not produce the leadership cream, but the goonish mtapa type of leadership. Look at all Nguni ethnic groups, they are so embracing they are the products of various tribal groups, you can find a Sotho man in Xhosa, Zulu, Ndebele and Swati.
