ZESN Warns Against Postponing 2028 Elections

The Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) has raised alarms over talks of postponing the 2028 elections to 2030, warning that such a move could undermine democratic principles.

In a statement issued on Monday, January 13, 2025, ZESN argued that delaying the elections could have a profound impact on the governance and electoral integrity of Zimbabwe. It said:

In light of these developments, ZESN commends President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his commitment to upholding the Constitution.

In 2024, he explicitly distanced himself from the push for the postponement of elections, stating that he had ‘no interest in extending his term beyond 2028,’ demonstrating a commitment to democratic norms.

This stance is particularly significant given the enthusiasm and clear push for an extension from certain political figures within his party, with the support from some opposition elements.

The President’s position underscores the importance of adhering to and upholding the Constitution, which establishes specific five-year term limits for elections. This framework is essential for ensuring regular democratic participation.

ZESN warned that postponing elections could erode public trust in electoral processes, raising concerns about democracy and accountability.

The watchdog also argued that delaying elections in Zimbabwe could set a dangerous precedent, especially given Zimbabwe’s role as the Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

ZESN also pointed out that the proposal could violate the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, to which Zimbabwe is a signatory. It said:

ZESN emphasises the importance of adhering to constitutional mandates concerning electoral timelines.

These timelines should be determined by legal correctness rather than influenced by political agendas.

Upholding electoral integrity is essential for fostering trust in governance not only for Zimbabwe but for the whole of the SADC region.

ZESN calls for political will on meaningful and genuine electoral reforms and implementing Election Observer Missions’ (EOMS) recommendations.

The Network remains committed to advocating for meaningful electoral reforms, including adhering to electoral timelines as stipulated in the Constitution.

ZESN is part of the toramari united cartel aka NGOs cartel. When were the last elections held in Saudi Arabia? Their consulate in Turkey even beheaded a dissident journalist at the embassy building: No problem: YUWESEI continues to pour billions of dollars into the Saudi Arabia economy through arms sales etc. Contested elections do not deliver democracy to the people: pabatei ipapo. Check what's happening across the border in Mozambique.

South Africa chose to form a coalition government instead of conducting a re-run of the stalemate election. Was it a bad move? Was a rerun the best choice?
Sir African · 1 month ago
South African constitution allows for a coalition government where no single party wins the majority of seats unlike Zimbabwe. There is no room for a rerun. In my opinion the South African constitution is inclusive and allows proportional representation. Our constitution is based on,tribalism, hatred, greed ,fear ,mistrust, exclusion and corruption.

I don't think it's about the constitution even if we had a constitution like S.A minus gay rights Zanu pf with the help of a captured judiciary would still be able to manipulate the constitution to advance their perpetual greed and selfishness... what's needed is respect of the constitution and Zanu doesn't appreciate that coz even Zanu pf itself is alien to self respect

MuZim Zanu has a belief that it totally owns Zimbabwe and no other party should govern. Zanu has a belief that if one is not Zanu Pf he is an enermy, a sellout, a puppet of the west which is in sharp contrast with South Africa where all South Africans are valued, listened to and included. In Zim even a part with 49% of votes is taken by the ruling party as nothing although it represents a huge number of the population

zvakangofanana kupostponter kana kusa zanu will always win but I know zanu loves elections they love rigging this time around there is no strong opposition
Sir African · 1 month ago
In 2002 there was no strong opposition but people came togather because they felt threated that is why they rejected Mugabe's referendum overtures. Its not only the opposition that fears an extension of term by Mnangagwa but the whole nations.Just listen to what zanupf members say in private if you want to know what will happen. So there nothing to fear here.I will ask God to postpone my death until after the referendum. We have the power in our hands.

There's no strong opposition, are you sure? There's no strong opposition in the parliament only. The masses out there, is the opposition. The opposition has grown bigger than ever before, take for instance the opposition within Zanu pf the "Bhora musango".
