ZACC Denies Involvement In Cross-Border Truck Driver's Death

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has denied any involvement in the death of a cross-border truck driver during a high-speed chase in Beitbridge last week.

According to media reports, the truck driver died in a head-on collision following a high-speed chase with a vehicle supposedly involved in an anti-smuggling operation.

In a statement on Saturday, 25 January, ZACC clarified that it is not part of any anti-smuggling operation.

The commission emphasized its mandate to promote honesty, financial discipline, and transparency. The statement reads:

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has noted with concern a video circulating on social media platforms, falsely accusing the Commission of causing the death of a cross-border truck driver.

According to media reports, the truck driver “died in a head-on collision following a high-speed chase” with a vehicle alleged to be on an anti-smuggling operation.

The Commission extends heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family and places on record that it is not part of any anti-smuggling operation.

As an institution mandated, among other things, to promote honesty, financial discipline and transparency, the Commission implores Zimbabweans to declare goods and pay taxes at the ports of entry. Tax evasion is a criminal offence.

The Commission also advises that lately, there has been an alarming increase in the number of persons and purported non-governmental organisations impersonating ZACC and its officials.

Impostors from these bogus organisations induce fear in their victims, coercing them to pay bribes so they can ‘drop charges’ against them.

In other words, ZACC is saying that truck drivers must not stop when ordered to do so anywhere other than at a proper police roadblock. If anyone tries to run them off the road in a chace, let them run him off instead.

When we talk of indeginisation we are talking of running a company that disregards established business ethics such as accountability and proper controls. In this case a person just takes an unbranded vehicle and ambushes a person who is dozens of kilometres from the border and allege smuggling. How do you prove in court that the suspect had smuggled the goods? The likelihood that a Zimra team caused the mans death is very high because staff members are accountable to noone. There are no records to indicate that so and so has driven out vehicle numbers xxx for personal ar business trip.We are all hungry and people are doing what they can to catch that elusive dollar.Police officers setup up road blocks in unlikely places just to squeeze a dollar from unsuspecting citizen.

Are we to believe that we now have highway robbers who freely highjack commercial vehicles without interruption from our well trained security operatives? Lies and denial are now a pass time in government offices.
