24 Dead, 30 Injured In Bus And Truck Collision Near Beitbridge

Twenty-four people died, and more than thirty others were injured in a head-on collision between an Urban Connect bus and a commercial truck, 21km north of Beitbridge on Thursday morning.

Beitbridge District Medical Officer, Dr Lenos Samhere, confirmed the deaths to the Chronicle, saying 17 people died on the spot, while seven succumbed to head injuries at the hospital. He said:

We are still busy on the ground. We’ll have a better picture of the exact figures at a later stage.

Witnesses said that the bus, en route to Beitbridge, collided with a truck travelling to Chirundu, just 21 km past the Lutumba tollgate.

Beitbridge residents flocked to the local hospital, hoping to find out if their relatives were among the victims.

Residents flocked to the accident scene to take videos while people were dying, I did not see anyone looking for someone or trying to help in the clips circulating.

The Nation's roads are now a death trap because of numerous reasons, reckless drivers, unroad worthy vehicles, bad roads coupled with terrible road infrastructure such as signs and traffic lights. The number of people who perish on our roads each year is staggering, that can't be normal for a country which doesn't have such a large population. Order needs to be brought back so as to save lives.

Number 1: RECKLESS DRIVERS ESPECIALLY PUBLIC TRANSPORT DRIVERS, BUS DRIVERS!
Johm · 2 months ago
What's bad roads got to do with head on collision in this case . Recklessness is the problem
Anonymous · 2 months ago
Drivers try to make up for lost time when they get to the good parts of a road. Beitbridge road is quite bad in a lot of areas. They slow down on bad parts and speed up on good ones. Reckless yes but the govt should also accept blame.

Human error is the leading cause of road traffic accidents. These drivers are always speeding like Lewis Hamilton on our roads.
Corruptmore Looto · 2 months ago
Read to understand, that was a generalisation of causes of road traffic accidents in this country, where did I say this particular accident was because of bad roads huh, but you cannot dispute the fact that some accidents in this country are also directly or indirectly influenced by bad roads. I can clearly see your hastiness was influenced by trying to defend the regime on their terrible track record of maintaining roads.
Roman · 2 months ago
I'm not defending the regime. You're right: most of our roads are horrendous and beyond embarrassing. I pointed out that HUMAN ERROR is the leading cause of road traffic accidents. That's all. FYI, I hate the regime. The regime has been failing since independence in 1980.
