Govt Considers Revoking Urban Connect Bus License After Beitbridge Accident

Felix Mhona, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, is contemplating revoking the licence of Urban Connect Bus Service following a tragic accident near Beitbridge on Thursday, which resulted in the deaths of 25 people.

While speaking at a Government-led joint funeral service for the victims in Beitbridge on Friday, Mhona condemned the bus driver for reckless behaviour, suggesting that it may have contributed to the deadly crash. He said:

Why was he racing towards the toll gate? We may have to remove them from service.

It has also emerged that the bus driver’s retest expired in 2021, and the bus had no route permit.

Mhona also urged Zimbabweans to refrain from recording videos at accident scenes and to wait for official communication. He said:

Let’s have respect for the dead and wait for proper transmission of messages. We are likely to cause more harm than good. We will investigate the causes of this accident and act.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the accident occurred at the 262-kilometre peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road, near Lutumba Toll Gate, around 8 AM on Thursday, 13 February.

An Urban Connect bus, carrying 65 passengers, collided head-on with an Auro Transport haulage truck that had four occupants on board.

The crash occurred when the bus attempted to overtake another vehicle. The bus was en route from Harare to Beitbridge, while the truck was travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver, individually, was the direct cause of the accident. He overtook dangerously. His license must be canceled for life. The owner did not ensure that his driver had been retested. He allowed his bus to operate without a route permit, maybe because it had not passed a VID fitness test. The police at the roadblocks assured the bus smooth passage. Forty-five years after independence, our roads must be the envy of every developed country.

@Sim 1: true because truck driver was correct but he became the victim of the day accident. Anochenget ndimwari. Also corruption is another major probleme that occupied Zimbabwe. There must be speed limiting devices to be installed on all public transport before attaining all roadworthy requirements but this is impossible because currently most vehicles not roadworthy.

Is this bus involved in the accident belong to the same company Urban Connect with the other bus that killed a lot of people in 2012 at a curve just after Mandebvu shops 3 km from Ngundu when the bus driver dozed off?

75% of accidents on our roads are a result of corruption at Police Road Blocks.
Murambwi · 2 months ago
ZRP is answerable. lmagine the number of road blocks the bus went thru. It's clear even to Tom and Jerry that ZRP is very corrupt. They are good at reaping what they did not sow. Money is the root of all evils. ZRP is one of the organizations that are fond of fulfilling the scriptures. Mind you! We are living in the last days.

Before Independence we almost never had road blocks and also few accidents. What has changed?

The driver has caused a lot of suffering to a lot of families who have lost their loved ones in a blink of an eye. Road permit blah blah are just secondary issues known by the Police and where they 'eat'
