Zimbabweans Struggle With Joblessness And Low Wages, New Survey Shows

According to the 2024 Citizens’ Perceptions and Expectations Survey by the Sivio Institute, the majority of Zimbabweans remain either unemployed or reliant on informal work.

The survey, which included 1,272 respondents from across the country, revealed that only 37% of respondents were formally employed, 30% were self-employed, and 28% were unemployed.

Among those employed, 36% worked in the informal sector, while 20% were in the private sector and another 20% in government jobs.

The survey revealed that young people, especially those aged 18-35, are most affected by unemployment.

Agriculture remains the largest source of employment, providing 15% of jobs, followed by education and construction at 11% each.

However, manufacturing, once a major sector, now accounts for only 2% of employment.

Income levels are also low. The majority (71%) of employed respondents earn between US$51 and US$500 per month, with 4% reporting no income at all.

A breakdown of monthly income shows that 4% earn under US$50, 32% earn between US$51 and US$200, 39% earn between US$201 and US$500, 16% earn between US$501 and US$1,000, and 4% earn between US$1,001 and US$5,000. No one reported earning between US$5,001 and US$10,000, or more than US$10,000.

Employment creation was ranked as the top national priority by 62% of respondents, followed by healthcare improvement (37%) and price stabilisation (34%).

However, only 5% of respondents felt that the government had made significant progress in job creation since the 2023 elections.

@nyonglo what you are saying shows you did not go to school and do statistics. A survey involves a small number of people who represent the whole population. It shows that among those sampled no one earned above 5000usd. They DID NOT say that in Zimbabwe no one earned more than 5000usd.

Most companies are now owned by Zanu (pf) gurus.Zanu Pf is said by some quarters to be the party that liberated Zimbabwe from the colonial yoke. How the colonial yoke was replace by an african yoke which is too hard to bear as Africans in Zanu pf do not pay their workers.

The majority of people attend church. The solution for jobs can be found in the churches. Each church must establish a business,it could be a manufacturing, retail, construction or education.People must not go to churches only to pray and worship. Many white garment churches have established viable business projects, the people there are very industrious. Further more,Our city father's must also learn crowd funding for example in Bulawayo we have 2million people, imagine if everyone donates a 1$dollar each every month for the whole year,by the end of the year it's over $20million,that amount of money is enough to construct a factory that will provide employment for a thousand people.Using that same 1$crowd funding model in ten years time many factories will be opened providing jobs for over ten thousand people in Bulawayo alone, multiply that across the other cities in Zimbabwe, that means hundreds of thousands of jobs created. In addition,The other solution to creating jobs is through plastic recycling, the municipalities needs to establish plastic recycling centers were unemployed young people get paid money for old plastics,In south Africa I have noticed it works very well , many factories manufacturer Tupperwares etc using recycled plastics. It provides jobs for thousands of young people. In conclusion, creating jobs is possible it's all about coming up with innovative ideas,If you look at the example of Zanzibar for example, they are the spice capital of Africa, the spice market in Zanzibar it's a billion dollars industry, anybody can farm spices ginger garlic it's doable, Zimbabwe is even bigger than Zanzibar imagine how much money we can get as a country. Its all about innovative leadership, coming up with cutting edge solutions, the Singapore type of leadership.Jobs can be created.

It's very painful, the wages mentioned are only on paper, the situation on the ground is very pathetic. Black employers and Chinese companies don't follow the labor laws. It's no longer employment but slavery. Those who are jobless are better. They should remain jobless if they want to enjoy life. You work overtime and get no pay or other allowances. The pay bellow minimum wage, there is nowhere to report because the labor bodies are in politics. If you go to court, you won't win the case because you don't have the money to pay lawyers
Anonymous · 1 week ago
When you do pay according to labour laws, the more you pay your employees, the more they get taxed, so it's pointless paying more, because the worker gets less money at the end of the day, after they get an increase.

You sound like an employer, you must have mercy on your workers, we don't want a Chinese mentality
Anonymous · 1 week ago
You clearly misread the statement. Money does not grow on trees. You have to have excess money to pay more money. Businesses can't levy a tax when the bank has no balance. Where is the mercy on those that pay the wages who are burdened with taxes and bureaucracy? Or mercy only goes one way? Businesses are not USAid. I fail to see when any worker looks at the payslip and says, why is it that I have been given an increase, but because of taxes I am being paid less. Do they complain to those who levy the taxes or only complain to those who have to hand over the taxes to government. It is you who has the Communist mentality. Therefore the Chinese mentality.
