Alex Marufu is an entrepreneur in the technology space. Alex is a non-executive director of CBZ Bank, chairs the board of TBWA Zimbabwe, Artson Systems in Kenya and previously chaired the NetOne Cellular board.


Career

Alex is unemployed and splits his time between growing technology businesses across Africa, managing a small family owned property portfolio as well as research, writing and teaching in the areas of Design Science Research, Innovation and Disruptive Technologies with the University of Pretoria Alex left then global ICT Company ICL in 1997 (where he was General Manager for Zimbabwe) to set up one of Zimbabwe’s earliest Internet companies PrimeNet Communications (later sold to Multichoice/MWeb).

He joined SAP in 1999 and led the growth of its business in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. In the mid-2000s Alex pushed for changes in the electronic payment ecosystem by introducing Internet banking, SMS Banking and third-party transaction acquiring through a startup company called Uniswitch. Uniswitch was acquired by Twenty Third Century Systems (TTCS), where Alex spent a few years managing the Government of Zimbabwe’s e-government initiatives, while also overseeing the growth of TTCS’s business into seven African countries. In 2015, 50% of TTCS was acquired by listed South African ICT company EOH and Alex moved to join EOH in South Africa where he was responsible for deploying systems into several state-owned entities.


Education

Alex holds a BSc degree majoring in Physics with minors in Mathematics and Computing Science and an MBA from the University of Zimbabwe. He also holds a Masters in ICT and a PhD in Information Systems from the University of Pretoria.
