Bindura
Bindura is a town and District located in Mashonaland Central Province.
History
The name is probably a corruption of Chi pindura mhuka (ChiZezuru), meaning 'turn the game'. Local legend has it that Chipadze Tsoko was killed by his son-in-law, who had married one of his daughters and settled there. He became Chipadze Nyoni. Chipadze Tsoko's spirits inhabited Bindura Hill. Chipadze Nyoni came to an arrangement with them whereby he observed their religious ceremonies, and they supplied meat to the people. Each November an ox was taken to a flat rock at the foot of the hill. On a signal from the chief, the high priest ((dunzwi) seized the ox by the horn. If the ox died, the message was sent mhuka dza kumwe dzinga pindurugwe, meaning the game an be turned. Then, on a given day, the bush would be fired in a large circle around the hill and all game was driven in and killed for meat. If the ox did not die, there was no fire and game drive. [1]

In the Zimbabwe 1985 Parliamentary Election, Bindura/Shamva returned to Parliament:
- Joice Teurai Ropa Nhongo of Zanu PF - 42 822 votes.
- Arthur Muchena of PF-ZAPU - 415 votes.
- Ishmael Chemael Stephen Hajabu of UANC - 344 votes.
In the 1990 Parliamentary Election (see A History of Zimbabwean Elections) Bindura returned to Parliament:
- Joice Mujuru of Zanu PF with 35 262 votes,
- Emmanuel Magoche of ZUM with 4 110 votes.
Turnout - 41 669 voters or 92.91 %
In the 2000 Elections, (see A History of Zimbabwean Elections) Bindura returned to Parliament:
- Border Gezi of Zanu PF with 13 328 votes,
- Elliot Pfebve of MDC with 11 257 votes,
- Florence Mudyavanhu of UP with 334 votes.
Following the death of Border Gezi (Zanu PF) in a car crash on 28 April 2001, a poll was held on 27–28 July 2001. The result, Bindura returned to Parliament:
- Elliot Manyika of Zanu PF with 15 864 votes,
- Elliot Pfebve of MDC with 9 456 votes.
Local Government
The Bindura Local Government is Bindura Municipality and Bindura RDC.
Carlos Tokyo was elected Mayor of Bindura on 5 September 2018 after the swearing-in of 12 councillors that won Bindura Municipality elections on 30 July 2018. [2]

Events
Mayor/deputy Mayor Fracas, 2020
The Bindura deputy Mayor Norbert Dokotera physically assaulted the Mayor, Carlos Tokyo over allegations of “stolen” residential stands. MDC Alliance party members Jacob Gwature, Smile Matola and Jonnah Kapasi restrained Norbert Dokotera who was later arrested over the event on 19 October 2020. [3]

Mayor of Bindura Jacob Gwature and Jonathan Kapasi will spend more nights in remand prison. [4]
2020 Mayoral elections
After the MDC T recall of Carlos Tokyo (Cllr Ward 5) and his deputy Norbert Dokotera, (Cllr Ward 10) Bindura Municipality yesterday elected a new mayor, Cllr Brian Kembo and his deputy Cllr Tongai Jack.
Acting town clerk Mr Kelton called for a special council meeting in December 2020 to have an election for the two posts. The election was conducted by Richard Chipfuva, district development coordinator. [5]
2023 Mayor arrested
In September 2023, Bindura Mayor Jacob Gwature and Jonathan Kapasi were arrested in connection with a case of fraud. The case alleges Pamhodzi Rainbow Network (their company) failed to drill a borehole and install a solar system to power the borehole at a stand in Budiriro, as contracted in January 2021 by Kitchen Table Charities Trust, based in United Kingdom.
