Bindura Nickel Corporation Limited also known as BNC engages in the mining of nickel and the extraction of related by-products. BNC is a subsidiary of Zimnick Limited and operated and majority-owned by Mwana Africa plc, an African multi-national mining company based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The operating subsidiary of BNC is Trojan Nickel Mine Limited.

Background

Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) commenced production at the Trojan Nickel Mine, located near the town of Bindura, Zimbabwe, in July 1968. Subsequently, BNC developed three other nickel-copper mines in Zimbabwe over the following seven years. Of these, only Trojan and Shangani mines are still in operation. The Smelter was commissioned in 1968, using two blast furnaces treating concentrates from Trojan and Madziwa mines. The blast furnaces were decommissioned in 1976, with the commissioning of the present electric furnace ^[2]

Significant Events

A $43.7 million impairment charge for Bindura Nickel Corporation’s operations in Zimbabwe resulted in huge losses for its parent company, Mwana Africa in 2013. The losses totalled $42.5 million, more than $35 million more than the previous year.^[3]
