Chinembiri Bhunu is a Zimbabwean judge and a justice of the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe.

Legal Career

Justice Chinembiri Bhunu was appointed Senior President of the Labour Court in 2001. In 2003 Chinembiri Bhunu was appointed as a High Court Judge. He was promoted to the Supreme Court and to the Constitutional Court on September 16th, 2015. [1]


Notable Cases

Police Officer Died during an MDC Violence

On 6 September 2016 Bhunu passed a judgment after 5 years on the MDC supporters who were convicted of killing a police officer. Yvonne Musarurwa, Tungamirai Madzokere, and Last Maengahama were sentenced to 20 years in jail each while Phineas Nhatarikwa was given a three year wholly suspended sentence on condition he is not an accessory for any offense in five years. He was also fined $500, or serve for 3month.

Yvonne Musarurwa (29), Tungamirai Madzokere aged (41), and Last Maengahama aged (40) were found guilty of murder with the actual intent of a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Inspector Petros Mutedzi. Phineas Nhatarikwa aged 50 was convicted for being an accessory to the crime.

In 2011 MDC members led by Tungamirai Madzokere a councilor in Glen view 3 allegedly convened an unsanctioned meeting at Glen View 3 Shopping Centre which was stopped off by police. However, it was alleged that the activists started throwing stones, shouting and chasing the police officers. One of the police officers Petros Mutedza failed to out-run the activists and was attacked. He, however, died upon arrival to the hospital. Yvonne Musarurwa and accused in murder of ZRP Inspector Mutedzi sentenced by Justice Chinembiri Bhunu to 20 years
