David Denton is a Zimbabwean-born, Scottish rugby union player who plays for Edinburgh Rugby in the Scottish Rugby League. He plays in the back row, starting 8 for Scotland, but can be played in the second row.

Background

David Kipling Denton was born on 5 February 1990 in Marondera, Zimbabwe, to a Zimbabwean father and Scottish mother. It is because of his mother's heritage that he is able to play for Scotland. He attended school in the Eastern Cape in South Africa, at Kingswood College before making several appearances for Eastern Province in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Playing Career

From South Africa, he moved to He moved to Edinburgh, Scotland where he studied economics at the University of Edinburgh. While at university he played for Edinburgh Academical Football Club. He started playing in the 3rd XV for much of his first season with the club, before advancing into the 2nd team by Malcolm McVie. Denton made into into the the Scotland Under 20s thereafter he'd play for the Scottish National Academy. It was after this that he was awarded a professional contract with Edinburgh from the 2010–11 season.

In his debut season, he'd play so well that he'd get a call up for Scotland's extended World Cup squad in the build-up to the showpiece.

Speculation would prevail that he was moving to English Premiership rugby side Aviva Premiership, but he'd announce his loyalty to Edinburgh by signing a new contract keeping him at Murrayfield (Edinburgh's home ground) until 2016.

International career

David Denton made his debut for the Scotland national rugby union team against Ireland in a 10-6 win during the Rugby World Cup warm-up matches in August 2011. His porfomance however would not afford him a place in the team for the tournament. He also appeared in all of Scotland's U20 side's games in 2010, five games in the Six Nations Under 20s Championship and in the IRB Junior World Championship.

He has appeared for the Scottish Sevens team in 2010 in the Dubai and George events.

Denton won the "man of the match" award, despite being on the losing side in Scotland's 6-13 defeat to England in the opening game of the 6 Nations in February 2012.

Denton was "Man of the Match" in the 6 Nations match against France on 8 March 2014 despite being on the losing side.
