Front for the Liberation of Zimbabwe (FROLIZI) was a political party in Rhodesia which participated in the war of independence from the Rhodesian government. It was founded in October 1971 and later merged with the African National Council on 6 December 1974.[1]

Background

FROLIZI was formed by dissatisfied members of the two main political parties at the time; the Joshua Nkomo led Zimbabwe African People's Union and the Ndabaningi Sithole led Zimbabwe African National Union.[2]

James Chikerema was one of the two party founders and he became its President.[3] He had defected from ZAPU. The other was Nathan Shamuyarira who had broken away from ZANU.[4]

Other parties disliked FROLIZI and considered "nothing more than a tribal union of Zezurus".[4]
