CCC Nomination
In April 2023, Gonese and Mutasa Central MP Trevor Saruwaka stepped down from contesting in the general elections despite being nominated.[1]
The Citizens' Coalition for Change (CCC) opted for a citizens-centric process to produce the party’s candidates as opposed to the traditional model of primary elections.
The nomination stage was the first of the four stages in the party's candidate selection process.
Gonese said he decided to decline the nomination and chose to back another nomination candidate Brian James to contest for the seat.
Quitting Active Politics
In October 2023, Gonese announced that he was quitting active politics to focus on his law practice.[2] In a private message sent to relatives on 14 October 2023, Gonese said:
I am reverting to being a private citizen and full-time legal practitioner and human rights activist. In a normal country, I would be going into real retirement, but I still have to put food on the table and what I trained to do is to practice law and so be it. It also gives me more time to spend with the family and do my long-distance running and occasionally hit the small white ball. In the future, time permitting, I will try to do a PhD and take up Arthur Mutambara’s challenge and write a book. But first things first, try to survive under challenging and difficult times.
