Kilimanjaro (real name Proud Chinembiri) was a Zimbabwean professional heavyweight boxer. He was also referred to as the Man Mountain.

Boxing Career

Chinembiri was first introduced to boxing when he was 32 years to a promoter known as Dave Wellings. Wellings arranged matches for him but the problem initially was that three potential opponents withdrew from three consecutive tournaments after one look at Chinembiri who was very big.

Chinembiri soon turned professional in October 1981 as Proud Kilimanjaro. At his first fight his huge fists could not fit into standard size boxing gloves. Bigger boxing gloves were later found and the match went ahead.

Less than a year after his first fight at Rufaro Stadium Kilimanjaro took the Africa Boxing Union All Africa title from Ghana’s Adama Mensah in September 1982.

A recorded 15 000 crowd for a boxing match turned up, thronged the stadium to watch the fight. The title guaranteed Kilimanjaro a WBC top 10 world rating which in turn made the holder eligible to challenge for the world title.

On 26 February 1990 Chinembiri was barred by the British Boxing Board of Control from a London match against Lennox Lewis after he refused to reveal the results of a mandatory AIDS test. Kilimanjaro said he was free of AIDS and chose not to fight because he had been sick all day.

Death

Kilimanjaro died on February 15 1994 after a long illness and was buried at his rural home of Buhera. A controversial herbalist Benjamin Burumbo was treating him at the time of his death.
