Maronga Der Bomber Nyangela is one of the civilian sportspeople that joined the uniformed services and engaged in elite football. He started his football career in 1982 and went on to score 29 goals in the 1983 season.

Background

Maronga was born almost 58 years ago and was raised in Harare's oldest suburb Mbare. He was a brilliant student at school and his dream was to become a medical doctor. Sadly his father could not send him to secondary school and he could not proceed after grade 7.

Football Career

Maronga says he was scouted by then Black Aces coaches Clever Hunda. Nyangela recalls how it took him only 15 minutes to charm the then Black Aces coaches Clever Hunda, Shadreck Ngwenya and Zoom Rambai. He was placed in the reserves team and in those 15 minutes, he tested Brenna Msiska four times. After those 15 minutes, he was changed to the first team.

Maronda helped Buffaloes to the premier league in 1999 but the team only lasted two seasons in top-flight football. Nyangela shared the award again with the late Highlanders great Adam Ndlovu in 1993 after scoring 24 goals apiece. Nyangela also led Black Rhinos to the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Champions now known as the Caf Champions League.

In 1987 he scored 28 goals, but could not catch up with Dynamos’ Moses Chunga who scored over 40.^[1]

Coaching Career

In 1996 he hanged his boots and began his coaching career at Black Rhinos. He has been coaching lower league teams in Harare where he stays.

Life After Football

Now a retired footballer Nyangela is devoted to imparting the art of blasting thunderous shots to the greenhorns drawn from Budiriro, Mufakose and Glenview suburbs. Nyangela had been involved in coaching in the lower leagues after hanging his boots. He has been with Budiriro Arsenal for the past four years.
