Munya Matarutse is a musician, a product of Pakare Paye Arts Centre which was formed by Oliver Mtukudzi. His music is a blend of Afro-Jazz, Katekwe and Jiti. He has released two albums up to date.

Background

Munya was born Munyaradzi Matarutse on 22 January 1988.[1] He went to Chiedza Primary School and St Josephs High School in Zaka, Masvingo.[1] He then went to Pakare Paye Arts Centre where he was trained to be a professional musician.

Career

Whilst he was still at Chiedza Primary School, Munya joined the percussion band as a drummer.[1] Prior to this, he was taught how to dance. He later on joined the marimba band. He was also part of the school's traditional dance group.

After completing his secondary education, he went to Pakare Paye Arts Centre. In 2005, he joined the Bandarimba Band and he began to learn how to play the acoustic guitar being taught by Mtukudzi and his late son, Sam Mtukudzi.[2] During the same year, he formed his own band, Kazevezeve which was composed of students from Pakare Paye Arts Centre.

Munya has performed in various musical concerts and or events. In 2007, he performed at the Victoria Falls International Jazz Festival and during the 2007 edition of the Harare Jazz Festival.[1] In 2009, he made his debut performance at the Harare Winter Jazz Festival.[1] He has also performed at the Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA) editions. In January 2015, he accompanied Oliver Mtukudzi on his tour to the United States of America and Canada.[2]

Trivia

Munya is also an actor and he starred in Nzou Nemhuru Mudanga and Chipo Changu.[1]
