Simba Mhere was a Zimbabwean TV personality known mostly for being the presenter of the Top Billing tv show on South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Mhere died at 26 in a car crash in the early hours of Saturday, 31 January 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa.[1]

Background

Born Simbarashe Mhere on 29 October 1988, to Joseph Mhere (father) and Angela Mhere (mother) in Zimbabwe he would later move to Johannesburg when he was just a year old. His parents were missionaries and Mhere has said they didn't have much growing up. His mother was a secretary and his father would go on missionary crusades.[2] He had a sister named Valerie that was 6 years younger than him.[3][4]

Simba Mhere attended Randpark High School in South Africa and then went on to study for a Bachelor of Commerce Accounting degree at the University of Johannesburg. Mhere worked as a voice-over artist and a master of ceremonies for some of South Africa's most prestigious events, one of which was the Miss SA pageant in 2013.[1]

Simba became Top Billing presenter in 2010 after winning the reality TV presenter search.[1]

Death

Simba Mhere died in a car crash on the morning of 31 January 2015 in Johannesburg. The accident happened on the N3 North near the Marlboro offramp. Eight people died in the crash and some victims were airlifted from the scene. Mhere was on his way to OR Tambo International Airport to catch a flight to Cape Town to attend the J&B Met Horse race.[5]

He was travelling with his friend as well as father at the time of the accident. Simba was driving when another car, a VW Polo, reportedly crossed over the middle island and collided with Mhere's on the driver’s side. He and his friend, who has not been named, died on impact while his father escaped unharmed.[5]

After his death on 31 January 2015 his manager Lorraine Meizel commented that Mhere was going place and that he "was the most amazing human being. Gentle, kind and loving, honest, hardworking. He was everything; he was the most extraordinary person. I saw him on Thursday. And I always used to kiss him on the neck and always used to love it and shake."[1]
