Stanley Madiri is a Zimbabwean athletics coach based in the United Kingdom. He was appointed coach of the British sprinters for 2015 European Indoor Championships which took place in Prague, Czech Republic.
Background
The Zimbabwean coach is now rated as one of the best coaches in England after having helped a number of British athletes to scale greater heights on the track under his mentorship at Speed Dynamiks, an athletics club based at a High Performance Centre called Lee Valley in North London. He is also an IAAF elite speed coach who has a good record, he coaches Commonwealth and European 200m silver medalist Jodie Williams, he also coached Christine Ohuruogu and is one of the highly respected professionals in athletics.[1]
Career
Coaching
Before he left to settle in the UK some 12 years ago, Madiri was a revered track and field coach in Zimbabwe who identified, groomed and nurtured a number of the country’s top sprinters. From the schools set-up here in Zimbabwe, Madiri was a sportsmaster at Marondera High School and he “produced” the likes of Felix Kamangirira, Yvonne Ntini, Larissa Bakare, Chawada Kachidza (who won the IAAF rising star competition and was rewarded with a ‘watch the Games bonus’ and went to the ‘96 Atlanta Olympics). After his stint at Marondera High School, Madiri joined the Millenium Athletics Academy, which he founded with the legendary Zimbabwean athletics coach Robert Mutsauki.
He scouted, recruited and trained, among others, Young Talkmore Nyongani from Chinhoyi, Beauty Dube from Nyanga, Sharon Tawengwa from Masvingo, Angela Makaha from Murehwa and Lloyd Zvasiya from Mabvuku. However, as a coach in Zimbabwe, Madiri had only one international assignment with Letiwe Mharakurwa for the World Junior Championships in 1997.[2]
Achievements as a coach
Madiri admitted he was “proud” after his then 15-year old protégé recorded a sprint double in the 100m and 200m at Bressanone in northern Italy. Williams became the first girl to have achieved the double feat at this level and achieved a world record of 23,08secs in the 200m. Madiri is an International Athletics Associations Federation elite speed coach who has a good record, and has also coached Christine Ohuruogu, a former Olympic, World and Commonwealth champion.
“I value the acknowledgement of the gurus in the industry more. The European Athletics Coaches Association had me present at their annual conferences two years in a row. They don’t do that except the speaker has unique insights into the sport. After developing two World junior champions in three years they had to take notice of me,” said Madiri.[3]
Madiri is also the personal trainer of blossoming soccer talent Jonah Fabisch, the son to the late Dream Team coach Reinhard Fabisch, who is playing for Hamburg juniors in Germany.
