<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Alex_Magaisa"> Alex Tawanda Magaisa</a>, a law lecturer and former Chief of Staff in the office of the late former Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, has said the issue of child marriages can be addressed by breaking the link connecting religiosity, politics and patriarchy.
He speaks as calls are increasing for the state to ensure justice for Memory Machaya, a 14-year-old girl who died on 15 July during childbirth at a church shrine in Marange, Manicaland. I have posted this collage of pictures to illustrate that there’s need for non-partisan introspection. Don’t get me wrong, ZANU PF is the governing party and therefore the duty-holder that has greater responsibility. But pandering to toxic religiosity is a national pandemic.
There’s nothing wrong with religiosity but it is vital to acknowledge the existence of toxic religiosity. It is under this toxicity that vulnerable people “freely” give away their meagre savings on the promise of miracles &amp; girls are forced into unions with predatory old men.
Patriarchy is the elephant in the room. Patriarchy is “a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it”. It is the core of the sect into which #MemoryMachaya was born, raised &amp; killed. But it is not the preserve of this sect.
 It is a societal problem. Many of us, both men &amp; women, who are outraged by what happened to #MemoryMachaya do so on public platforms but we are champions &amp; defenders of patriarchy when we retreat to other spaces. We encourage it sometimes without even realising we are.
The point is while those responsible for the rape and death of #MemoryMachaya must face justice, we as society must also take a deep look at ourselves. The nexus between politics &amp; religiosity needs unraveling but we must also confront our abiding loyalty to patriarchy.

The United Nations in Zimbabwe has also expressed deep concern and strongly condemned circumstances leading to the untimely death of a 14-year-old who was reportedly forced to leave school for marriage when she was in form 1.

Memory's Death: Let's Break Link Of Religiosity, Politics & Patriarchy - Magaisa

A woman from Chendambuya in Headlands, Manicaland Province, is appealing for financial assistance for her 11-year-old son who was diagnosed with a kidney ailment.
The woman, Amaria Matutu, said her son, Tafadzwa Bhobho, has been admitted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for the past two and a half months.
She is appealing for financial help to buy Tafadzwa’s medication as well as paying for several scans.
Matutu said since 17 May 2021 when Tafadzwa was admitted to the hospital to 5 July, the cumulative bill has risen to ZWL$219 641.31. The bill is expected to go up as Tafadzwa is still admitted to the hospital.

Tafadzwa started to experience swelling in his body and was taken to a local clinic in Chendambuya, her mother said.
He was then referred to Rusape General Hospital, where they were further referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for advanced medical care.
Matutu said according to doctors, Tafadzwa has kidney problems and he has been on dialysis eight (8) times.

Tafadzwa was operated on and the doctors inserted nephrostomy tubes and a catheter to drain urine directly from his kidneys.
Matutu is currently unemployed and lives in the rural areas. Her husband is also unemployed and has another family to take care of.

Headlands Mum Seeks Help For Son (11) Diagnosed With A Kidney Ailment

A man from Rushinga District, Mashonaland Central Province, has been fined five beasts by a traditional court for incest after he was caught red-handed between the sheets with his son’s wife.
Munashe Kahonde was caught by his son Peter Mafuta in the latter’s house in bed with his daughter-in-law.
Kahonde was brought to Headman Chipara’s Community Court after being caught committing adultery with his daughter-in-law in her matrimonial home.
Reports suggest that Kahonde was trapped after there was a suspicion about his marital affair with his daughter-in-law.
H-Metro was told that Kahonde, a nurse aid at Chimandau Clinic, hid under Mafuta’s bed for the night when Mafuta came back home. Said Mafuta:
<blockquote>The day Kahonde fell into a snare, he was betrayed by his shoes that were found at the corner inside the bedroom.
My wife refused to admit but I rummaged the bedroom until I found him in stealth under the bed.</blockquote>
Kahonde received a tongue-lashing from Headman Chipara who said the man’s conduct was against social customs, values and ethos.
This was actually Kahonde’s second time to be dragged to his Court with such type of cases, the headman revealed.
Kahonde had already lost more than seven beasts within a year paying victims of his adultery cases.
Headman Chipara ordered him to pay five beasts – three for Mafuta and two for traditional authority for the incest case.
