Ethan Sutherland, a young footballer from Scotland who plays for English club Wolverhampton Wanderers, has decided to represent Zimbabwe at international level. 
He’s the first player to be recruited through a new Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) program that’s reaching out to talented young players with Zimbabwean roots living abroad.
The 18-year-old can play as a winger or right-back. He was born in Scotland to a Zimbabwean mother and a Scottish father.
Sutherland made the switch after talks with ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi and Zimbabwe’s national team coach Michael Nees, who are currently in the UK trying to convince more players of Zimbabwean heritage to play for the national team, the Warriors.
Their campaign started in London, where they met with Sutherland and his family, and then continued to Birmingham. 
They also plan to speak with two other promising young players, Liverpool’s Trey Nyoni and Chelsea’s Shumaira Mheuka.
Sutherland started his career at Scottish club St. Mirren before joining Wolves in the English Premier League. 
While he hasn’t played for Wolves’ first team yet, he is part of their U21 squad and recently went on loan to Solihull Moors to gain more experience.
He played for Scotland’s U19 team last year, earning three appearances, but hasn’t played for the senior national team.

A 15-year-old Zimbabwean girl has been denied life-saving medical treatment in South Africa because of her nationality.
Vanessa Mafu, who suffers from a life-threatening autoimmune disease, has been told she does not qualify for a liver transplant from a South African donor.
Her desperate parents have now filed an urgent application at the Johannesburg High Court, seeking to compel Charlotte Maxeke Hospital to perform the life-saving procedure, which could cost up to R1.5 million. The parents have stated that they are willing and able to cover the cost.
In an affidavit, Vanessa’s father, Vuyelwa Ncube, said doctors treating his daughter diagnosed her with autoimmune hepatitis, which has progressed to liver cirrhosis.
Ncube said his daughter urgently requires a liver transplant to survive.
The family was informed that Vanessa could receive a liver either from a deceased donor, if consent was given for medical use, or a portion of a liver from a living donor, typically a family member.
However, South African doctors told Ncube that there is a national priority list for organ recipients, and Zimbabwean nationals are not eligible to receive organs from deceased South African donors.
To be included on that list, Vanessa’s father would need a valid visa or work permit.
Ncube will argue before the High Court—during an urgent hearing expected within days—that he has applied for an extension of his expired work permit and is currently awaiting the outcome.
He will also contend that his immigration status does not absolve the hospital of its obligation to preserve life.
The family’s lawyer, Advocate Simba Chitando, told ZimLive that Vanessa’s case is “extremely urgent because it is a life-saving procedure, but it is also one of the most cruel, inhuman, and blatantly xenophobic acts perpetuated by the state against a child.” He added:

A disturbing video widely circulated on social media shows Mahamba seated on the road while a Ford Ranger repeatedly runs over him, resulting in his death at the scene.
Johannesburg-based activist and lawyer Moreboys Munetsi told <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-and-courts/love-triangle-turns-deadly-zimbabwean-man-killed-in-brutal-bakkie-attack-in-sandton-699d0bf3-93ee-490f-94d0-0c7e36dc1cbe">IOL</a> that he is providing legal support to Mahamba’s grieving family. Said Munetsi:

For now I am giving the family legal support. At the same time, we were encouraging the Zimbabwean community in Joburg to raise funeral money through contributions. The funeral contributions are coming from the Zimbabwean community.

Munetsi confirmed that Mahamba’s body has already been repatriated to Zimbabwe for burial.
Mahamba was allegedly murdered by a Ugandan man, who has two children with Ntombi, a South African woman who was reportedly romantically involved with both men at the same time.
Ntombi was allegedly in a relationship with Mahamba while living with her other partner, the Ugandan man.
The tragic incident occurred on April 5, 2025, in Rivonia, Sandton, and escalated into a violent confrontation that ended with Mahamba being run over multiple times by a Ford Ranger bakkie, resulting in his death at the scene.
On his Facebook page, which has over 144,000 followers, Munetsi hosted a live conversation with Ntombi to discuss the events surrounding the tragedy. She said:

I agree that I once dated Emmanuel in January, and we broke up in February. Yes, we were in a relationship.
We broke up because some Ugandans recorded a video of me when I was with the guy (Emmanuel). My baby daddy is a Ugandan.
So I broke up with Emmanuel for my safety, for my kids and also for the sake of Emmanuel. I stopped talking to Emmanuel.

Ntombi said that on the fateful day, Emmanuel and some Ugandan men, who lived in the same house with him, came to her workplace.

Later on, I heard some noise, people fighting. When I went outside, I asked Emmanuel what he was doing, but he did not even respond to me; he only looked at me.
He was holding a stone, and he threw it away. He picked it again and hit the vehicle’s (wind) screen. That is when my baby daddy got angry, went to Emmanuel and beat him.

Recalling how she fell in love with the late Mahamba, Ntombi said she met him in Rivonia, Sandton, where he frequently visited the shop where she works to buy motorbike parts.
She explained that when she met Emmanuel earlier this year, she was still in a relationship with the Ugandan man, although their relationship was going through “difficulties.” 
At the time, Ntombi was living with the Ugandan man while she began dating Emmanuel.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that officers received a complaint about the incident. 
Upon arrival at the scene, they found a man lying on the side of the road with severe injuries across his body. Said Nevhuhulwi:

The paramedics declared him dead on the scene. According to information at hand, the victim reportedly argued with the shop owner and allegedly hit the shop owner’s vehicle with a brick, breaking the windscreen. The shop owner reportedly came out and drove over his body several times before fleeing the scene.

South Africa’s Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the deadline for visa and permit holders whose documents expired in March because of delays in processing applications.
The new deadline is 30 September, giving temporary relief to thousands of foreign nationals, including Zimbabweans, waiting for their immigration status to be finalized.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber announced the extension on Tuesday through Immigration Directive Number 4 of 2025.
This directive allows a temporary solution for foreign nationals affected by delays in processing visa appeals and manual applications.
The extension is especially important for holders of the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP), as many Zimbabweans are uncertain about their legal status in South Africa.
Schreiber acknowledged that despite efforts to fix the backlog, many visa applications remain unprocessed due to administrative delays. Said Schreiber:

The Department of Home Affairs has, since issuing Immigration Directive No. 16 of 2024, dated 18 December 2024, been working to clear the backlog in its visa and permitting regime.
However, many applications will not be ready for collection before the deadline of 31st March 2025, as stipulated in the previous concession, primarily due to delays in the printing process.
Furthermore, the processing of the resultant appeals, as well as some manual category applications, will not be completed by the expiry of the current concession and is now the department’s primary focus.
</blockquote>
The extension will give the Department of Home Affairs more time to process applications and allow applicants to collect their results and submit applications for the right visas.
Schreiber added that applicants who want to cancel their waiver applications and leave South Africa before 30th September will not be considered undesirable under immigration laws.
Visa holders waiting for their waiver application results can travel in and out of South Africa without being considered undesirable until 30th September 2025.
However, non-visa-exempt applicants with pending waiver applications must apply for a port of entry visa before returning to South Africa.
The minister also clarified that the extension applies to long-term visa applicants, but they must still follow the conditions of their visas. He said:

The extension also applies to visa holders who have applied for long-term visas, as outlined in Section 11(1)(b) of the Immigration Act, up to and including Sections 20 and 22 of the Act, and whose visa application is still pending as of the date of this directive.

Schreiber clarified that the temporary concession does not apply to those waiting for permanent residence approval. These applicants must keep their stay legally valid while awaiting approval.
The measures apply only to foreign nationals who are legally in South Africa and have submitted applications through VFS Global, with a verifiable receipt from the VFS tracking system.

According to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) monthly statistics, Diaspora remittances now make up 17% of the country’s total foreign currency receipts. The RBZ said:

The diaspora remittances have continuously supported the economy, accounting for 17 percent of the total foreign currency receipts.

In 2024, Zimbabwe experienced a significant surge in diaspora remittances, with inflows reaching a record US$2.2 billion, representing a 22 percent increase from the US$1.8 billion recorded in 2023.
Zimbabwe has millions of citizens living and working in countries such as South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates, following decades of economic challenges.
Diaspora remittances are a lifeline for millions of Zimbabweans back home, enabling families to cover everyday living expenses, education, healthcare, and other critical needs.

Zimbabwe got more money from people living in other countries in February 2025 compared to last year. The amount was $165 million, up from $153.8 million. This money is important for Zimbabwe because it makes up 17% of all the foreign money they get. In 2024, Zimbabwe got a lot of money from people abroad, reaching a record $2.2 billion. This money helps many families in Zimbabwe with things like food, education, and healthcare. Many Zimbabweans live and work in countries like South Africa, the UK, and the US.

Zimbabwe Sees 7.5% Growth In Diaspora Remittances In February

The Zimbabwe Exemption Permit Holders Association (ZEPHA) accuses South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs (DHA) of blocking ZEP holders from applying for permanent residence, despite them having lived, worked, and paid taxes in South Africa for many years, as allowed by the Immigration Act.
In a memo sent to the Zimbabwean ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi, ZEPHA details specific instances of discrimination that it claims have been happening, including:

<li>Traffic authorities have flatly refused to renew the driving licences of several ZEPHA members and then set up roadblocks searching for foreigners without licences;</li>
<li>Police raids have increased in communities where Zimbabweans are concentrated;</li>
<li>ZEP holders’ bank accounts have been frozen, or put on hold, by banks because their ZEP permits were deemed invalid;</li>
<li>SA law enforcement has been stepped up at companies employing Zimbabweans, and this campaign of harassment has resulted in many employers terminating the employment of Zimbabwean workers;</li>
<li>Dismissed Zimbabwean workers have had their Unemployment Insurance Fund and pension fund payments withheld;</li>
<li>Children of ZEP permit holders have been prevented from writing exams because they lack study visas; and</li>
<li>There are numerous recorded instances of Zimbabweans, including pregnant women, being denied treatment at SA hospitals.</li>
</ul>
In 2023, the Gauteng High Court ruled that the Department of Home Affairs’ decision to end the ZEP programme was unlawful and unconstitutional. The court ordered the government to engage with the ZEP community.
ZEPHA argues that, although the programme was extended until the end of 2025, many applicants for permanent residence will not be able to meet the deadline.
ZEP holders must book online appointments with the visa processing company VFS, but many have waited four months or more without receiving an appointment. As a result, their applications will not be processed before the programme expires at the end of the year.
ZEPHA said that no one can reach their full potential in such a toxic environment, which is the reality for Zimbabweans in South Africa.
The organisation has appealed to the Zimbabwean government to help speed up a program for voluntary return home. The memo concludes:

There are approximately 178,000 people holding Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs) in South Africa, including both permit holders and their dependent family members.
A memo sent by ZEPHA to the Zimbabwean ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi, seen by <a href="https://www.moneyweb.co.za/news/south-africa/help-bring-us-home-zimbabwean-permit-holders-say-life-in-sa-has-become-intolerable/">MoneyWeb</a>, reads in part:

Zimbabweans are now forced to litigate when they go to the hospital, schools, universities, travel on the roads, and at the workplace.
</blockquote>
ZEPHA adds that it has already launched a repatriation programme, but would like the Zimbabwean government’s help in assisting with the relocation of thousands of ZEP holders in finding accommodation and business opportunities, and to assist in lowering regulatory barriers to smooth their return. Reads the memo:

Many South Africans believe that Zimbabweans are hapless ZANU PF victims useful only for their highly sought-after cheap, efficient, and trustworthy labour.
Their assistance for Zimbabwean staff extends only to prolonging exploitation, but not to provide Zimbabweans with the rights required to live full and dignified lives.
In my view, they have no interest in the stability of Zimbabweans in South Africa, and the generations that will follow.
</blockquote>
According to the memo, the majority Black population in South Africa blames Zimbabweans for taking jobs, housing, healthcare, and economic opportunities, leading to the rise of vigilante groups targeting Zimbabweans with violence, robbery, and even murder, with little prosecution of perpetrators.
Xenophobia has been fueled by political parties like the Patriotic Alliance, MK Party, and ActionSA, while groups such as Operation Dudula and Put South Africa First have specifically targeted Zimbabweans.
These attacks often intensify during elections and national crises like COVID-19 and load shedding. The memo adds:

The white minority blames ZANU-PF for ruining the Zimbabwean economy and forcing its citizens to flee to SA to avoid poverty, political persecution and maladministration.
The mainstream media, which they control, have successfully sold the South African population the idea that Zimbabwe is a failed state, which will never recover without them, and that it stands as an example of what could happen to South Africa if their interests are not protected.

ZEPHA says the abuse of Zimbabweans in South Africa has caused significant psychological and emotional harm to the entire Zimbabwean community in the country.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said he supports the United States government’s decision to deport over 500 undocumented Zimbabweans residing illegally in the country.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Mnangagwa said:

It is estimated that approximately 545 Zimbabweans are currently living in the United States illegally.
This figure is part of a larger group of undocumented immigrants who have been ordered to leave the country.

President Mnangagwa said he supports the United States sending back more than 500 Zimbabweans living there illegally. He thinks it's okay for them to be deported. Around 545 Zimbabweans are in the United States without permission. This is just a small part of all the undocumented immigrants who have been told to go back to their home country.

The Young Nurses Indaba Trade Union (YNITU) supports the nurse featured in a controversial viral video recorded by a Zimbabwean patient at Halfway House Clinic in Midrand on Thursday, 16 January.
According to YNITU’s media statement released on Friday, the widely shared video was carefully cropped to show only part of an hour-long confrontation.
The union argued that despite the heated exchange, the patient’s constitutional right to healthcare services was not denied. The statement reads:

The Nurses in South Africa through their vigorous training understands that section 27 of the Constitution provides that everyone has the right to have access to health care services.
</blockquote>
The statement states that the nurse’s reaction was prompted by being “provoked” by the patient. The union said:

She reported this incident to her superior with no assistance and had no choice but to stand firm and defend herself.
</blockquote>
According to YNITU, the incident unfolded around 1 PM when the nurse, who had just completed her morning patient roster, was called back from lunch by her line manager to attend to additional patients.
Among them was a reportedly impatient individual demanding priority treatment. The situation escalated when the Zimbabwean patient, described as a regular clinic user with a history of targeting the same nurse, entered the consulting room while filming.
According to the union, witness statements gathered by the union said the patient demanded immediate attention and a referral to see a doctor at another facility, disrupting an ongoing consultation.
YNITU said its investigation revealed that the confrontation turned physical, with the patient allegedly preventing the nurse from leaving the room to seek assistance.
However, the viral video began only after the nurse had managed to exit the room and was speaking with her line manager on the phone.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.citizen.co.za/news/nurses-union-backs-healthcare-worker-in-viral-video-incident-at-midrand-clinic/">The Citizen</a>, YNITU secretary-general Lerato Mthunzi said they understand the presumption of innocence as a legal principle but support the officer as a moral principle.
Mthunzi said the South African health system is strained due to a lack of human and material resources, causing frustration in the community.
She argued that nurses, as frontline workers, often bear the brunt of this public frustration. Mthunzi said the anger directed towards nurses is misplaced, as it is the Department of Health’s responsibility to improve infrastructure and provide resources.
Mthunzi said nurse-to-patient ratios are extremely high, leading to substandard care. She said the nurse involved has pressed charges against the patient for assault.
The patient faces charges from another patient who was forced out of the consulting room during the incident.

The colleague reportedly responds that she “never saw the patient.” When the nurse relays this message, the patient adamantly counters:

The nurse claims, “I don’t check BP,” prompting the patient to ask, “What do you do?” The nurse replies, “I sleep, move around, and eat a lot.”
This draws a sharp rebuke from the patient, who comments on the nurse’s weight: “That is why you are fat.” Growing frustrated, the patient says:

In August 2022, Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba made controversial comments about Zimbabwean migrants, saying they strained the provincial healthcare system.
In a widely circulated video, she told a Zimbabwean patient at a Bela Bela hospital that South Africa was not running a charity and that migrants were not budgeted for in the healthcare system.
Ramathuba said the healthcare system was meant for the people of Limpopo and that foreign nationals were not part of the budget.
Her comments sparked backlash. The Zimbabwean embassy expressed shock and disbelief, calling for diplomatic engagement to address the issue.
Recent reports suggest that some Zimbabwean women are crossing into South Africa illegally to give birth and register their children as South African citizens to access social grants.
This has led to increased border patrols by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to curb illegal immigration.

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi, has said there is nothing unusual about Zimbabweans migrating to South Africa.
Hamadziripi insisted that migration is a global phenomenon, with people leaving even developed countries for better opportunities elsewhere.
Since the early 2000s, millions of Zimbabweans have left their country, with a significant number seeking refuge in South Africa, where many live and work, often illegally.
Zimbabwe’s ongoing economic crisis under the ZANU PF-led government has driven citizens to seek better prospects in neighbouring countries and beyond, with South Africa hosting the largest proportion of these migrants.
In an interview with SABC reporter Clement Manyathela on the programme “Face The Nation”, Hamadziripi asserted that the movement of Zimbabweans to South Africa is not a new trend.
When asked about the Zimbabwean government’s responsibility regarding the influx of citizens seeking jobs, healthcare, and improved living conditions in South Africa and other countries, Hamadziripi responded:

Migration from Zimbabwe to South Africa is not a recent phenomenon. It is historical and we can go way back many years and we can see that there has been migration from Zimbabwe into South Africa.
Zimbabwe is not the only country with nationals who come to South Africa. The reasons why they come to South Africa are varied because migration intrinsically is an individual decision.
We know even those countries considered the best countries to live in, you have people migrating from those countries.

When asked what the Zimbabwean government was doing to improve the situation and prevent citizens from leaving the country in large numbers, Hamadziripi responded:

In August 2022, the then Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba (pictured above) made controversial comments about Zimbabwean migrants, saying they were straining the provincial healthcare system.
In a widely circulated video, she told a Zimbabwean patient at a Bela Bela hospital that South Africa was not running a charity and that migrants were not budgeted for in the healthcare system.
Ramathuba said the healthcare system was meant for the people of Limpopo and that foreign nationals were not part of the budget.
Her comments sparked backlash, with the Zimbabwean embassy expressing shock and disbelief, and calling for diplomatic engagement to address the issue.
Recent reports suggest that some Zimbabwean women are crossing into South Africa illegally to give birth, to register their children as South African citizens to access social grants.
This has led to increased border patrols by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to curb illegal immigration.

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador Defends Influx Of Zimbabweans Into South Africa

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi, said a team has been sent to work with the South African government to verify whether any Zimbabwean nationals were among those rescued or who perished at the abandoned Buffelsfontein Mine in Stilfontein, North West Province.
South African authorities reported that 87 illegal miners from various nationalities lost their lives in the North West mine disaster.
Despite South African police blocking water and food from reaching the mine as part of an operation called “Vala Umgodi,” many of the “zama zamas” continued to resist emerging from the mine shafts in Stilfontein, fearing arrest.
In a statement, Hamadziripi said that the Zimbabwean Embassy is working to determine if any Zimbabwean nationals are among the deceased. He said:

The Embassy wishes to inform members of the public that it is working closely with the South African government to identify and verify the nationalities of the alleged Zimbabwe nationals retrieved from the Buffelsfontein Mine in Stilfontein, North West Province under the ongoing rescue operations.
Further to screening the 465 alleged undocumented Zimbabwe nationals currently in South African Police Service (SAPS) custody, the Embassy is seeking to establish whether there are any Zimbabwe nationals among 87 deceased individuals retrieved at the shaft, whose identities and nationalities are yet to be established.

Hamadziripi said the embassy is working to identify the deceased individuals through Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) testing of their relatives.
He urged Zimbabweans who believe their relatives might be among those rescued from the mine disaster in Stilfontein to urgently contact the Consulate in Johannesburg.

On Friday night, the Zimbabwean Consul-General in Johannesburg, Eria Phiri, reported that 10 Zimbabweans who had been rescued appeared in court and were fined R15,000 (or given a six-month jail sentence, wholly suspended) for illegal mining. These people were deported earlier in the week.

Nearly 2,000 illegal miners, primarily Mozambican nationals, followed by Zimbabweans and BaSothos, were operating at the disused mine.
Acting police commissioner for the province, Patrick Asaneng, confirmed that diplomatic talks between Zimbabwe and South Africa were ongoing. He said:

On Wednesday, South African police announced the end of the rescue operation at the abandoned gold mine in Stilfontein, believing they had brought out all the survivors and retrieved all the bodies.

According to a memo issued by South Africa’s Department of Basic Education (DBE), for the 2025 academic year, schools must admit all learners, regardless of their documentation status.
This includes students who fail to provide identification for the country’s matric years and undocumented foreign pupils.
Speaking on South Africa’s national broadcaster SABC, Mashaba said that if he were in authority, he would not allow any undocumented person or learner to benefit from South Africa’s already strained resources. Mashaba Demands Expulsion Of Undocumented Zimbabwean Children From South African Schools

Despite the South African Department of Home Affairs extending the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP) system until November 2025, some South African banks are reportedly continuing to freeze the accounts of ZEP holders, preventing them from accessing their funds, <a href="https://www.moneyweb.co.za/news/south-africa/zep-holders-face-uncertainty-as-some-bank-accounts-are-frozen/">reported Moneyweb</a>.
ZEP permits allow Zimbabweans to live and work in South Africa.
Human rights lawyer Simba Chitando, representing the ZEP Holders Association, attributes these account freezes to a systemic error within the banks rather than deliberate discrimination. Said Chitando:

We urge the banks to address this issue urgently and unblock these accounts so that we can avoid having to go to court to force them to do it.
</blockquote>
While many Capitec bank accounts belonging to ZEP holders were recently frozen, the bank swiftly responded, saying the issue was a system error now resolved. Most affected people received no prior notification.
This incident follows confusion earlier in 2024, when the First National Bank (FNB) sent text messages urging ZEP holders to renew their permits, leading many to believe they needed to apply for waivers or work visas.
Soon after, Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber issued a one-year ZEP extension.
Despite the extension, ZEP holders remain uncertain about their banking access beyond 2025 unless they secure alternative visas.
Chitando said the bank freezes stemmed from banks not updating their systems to reflect the ZEP extension.
Affected ZEP holders are advised to visit their banks with copies of their IDs/passports and a printout of the government gazette extending ZEP validity. Said Chitando:

The ball is in the court of the ZEP holders. If the banks refuse, only then can we consider legal action.

The account freezes sparked widespread panic within the ZEP community. Essential transactions, including payments for food, school fees, and other necessities, were disrupted, leaving many struggling to meet their basic needs. Said Chitando:

If the banks do not remove the hold, we will approach the courts. We can’t go [to] the courts without exhausting other remedies. It’s an issue that affects all the banks.
Obviously, it would be preferable for the banks to fix this situation themselves without forcing ZEP holders to approach the banks, which could involve thousands of customers.

Moneyweb contacted FNB for comment, receiving the following statement from Stanton Govender, Head of Foreign Nationals and Non-Resident Banking:

You have never washed your mother’s clothes, have never bathed her or your grandmother but you are doing it all because of money.
Some of these women were commercial sex workers who were abandoned by their children and are now being taken care of by the State. Those are the people you are taking care of in England.

Reports suggest that over 4,500 Zimbabwean-trained nurses and doctors are employed by the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).

Chiwenga, however, argued that such work should not be tolerated, as it can lead to mental fatigue. He said:

A Zimbabwean truck driver died after crashing into six trucks and five cars in Marrianhill Toll Plaza, on the N3 Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, on Friday.
The spokesperson for Transport and Human Settlements in KZN, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, confirmed the accident.
Sibiya said the driver of a truck from Zimbabwe died at the scene, while more than 10 people were left in critical condition. Said Sibiya:

Unfortunately, one of the truck drivers was found severely entrapped in their wreckage and despite best attempts by, paramedics he passed away on the scene. The national route was closed for hours whilst emergency personnel worked to clear the scene.

South African-based Zimbabwean Entrepreneur Wins Prestigious Award

The South African government has extended the validity of Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs) until November 28, 2025.
Previously, ZEP holders were required to apply by Friday, November 29, 2024, for a one-year exemption that would allow them to stay and work in South Africa until November 2025, or face deportation.
However, the ZEP Holders Association (ZEPHA) raised concerns that the backlog at the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) made it impossible for many holders to meet the application deadline.
In response, South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, granted a reprieve to ZEP holders by extending the permits for an additional year.
Schreiber announced the extension in a notice issued Friday, explaining that the extra time would allow for further consultation with ZEP holders and other stakeholders regarding the future of the current arrangement. Reads the notice:

1. I, Dr L. A. Schreiber, MP, Minister of Home Affairs, with the powers bestowed upon me in terms of section 31(2)(b) of the Immigration Act, (“Immigration Act”) have decided to extend the validity of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (“ZEP”) until 28 November 2025 in order for me to fulfill the duty placed on me by the Gauteng High Court to consult the affected ZEP holders and all other stakeholders on the future of the current dispensation.
2. The reactivation of the Immigration Advisory Board (“IAB”) is currently underway and its first task will be to consider, advise and enable the steps required for compliance with the Order of the High Court on the future of the ZEP. In order to give the IAB time to properly do its work, and a fair process to be followed, I direct that:
2.1 existing ZEPS shall be deemed to remain valid for the next (12) twelve months;
2.2. no holder of a ZEP may be arrested, ordered to depart or be detained for purposes of deportation or deported in terms of section 34 of the Immigration Act for any reason related to him or her not having any valid exemption certificate;
2.3. the holder of an exemption certificate may be allowed to enter into or depart from the Republic of South Africa in terms of section 9 of the Immigration Act, read together with the Immigration Regulations, 2014, provided that he or she complies with all other requirements for entry into and departure from the Republic, save for the reason of not having a valid visa endorsed in his or her passport; and
2.4.no ZEP holder should be required to produce a valid exemption certificate, visa or an authorisation letter to remain in the Republic as contemplated in section 32(1) of the Immigration Act when making an application for any category of the visa for a temporary sojourn in the Republic as contemplated in section 10(2) of the Immigration Act.

South Africa Extends Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs) By Another Year

Tyra Chante Naidoo, a Zimbabwe-born South African citizen, has petitioned Zimbabwean immigration authorities over her treatment as a visitor to the country.
Naidoo, who holds a Zimbabwean birth certificate and national identity card, wrote to the principal director of immigration to protest the way she was treated. Her visitor’s permit expired on June 19, 2024.
She is being represented by Prisca Dube, a member of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR). The letter, which was seen by <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200035329/i-want-a-zim-passport-says-zim-born-sa-citizen">Southern Eye</a>, reads:

Our client was born in Zimbabwe on June 15, 1996, at Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital in Harare. Her mother was a Zimbabwean citizen, she was born in Zimbabwe.
Our client holds a Zimbabwean birth certificate and national identity card marked CIT for citizens.
As such, she satisfies the requirements of citizenship by birth in terms of section 36 of the Constitution.
Our client’s parents had attempted to obtain a Zimbabwean passport for her when she was younger, but their efforts were futile.

She later obtained South African citizenship on December 19, 2005.
The lawyers argued that, as a Zimbabwean citizen by birth, Naidoo is entitled to immunity from deportation and the right to a passport and other travel documents, as outlined in Section 66 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe. Reads the letter:

We have further instructions to seek recourse through the courts should we not have a response from your office… In the event that we are forced to approach the courts, we will be seeking costs at a punitive scale as the legal proceedings can be avoided on a matter that presents facts on the basis of which the courts of Zimbabwe have passed judgements already.

South African Citizen Demands Zimbabwean Passport

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique, Victor Matemadanda, has urged Zimbabweans living in Mozambique to remain indoors until the political situation in the country stabilises.
His call follows ongoing protests by opposition supporters who are challenging the results of the October 9, 2024, elections, in which FRELIMO was declared the winner.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/stay-indoors-in-mozambique-locals-urged/">The Herald</a>, Matemadanda advised Zimbabwean nationals to avoid public gatherings and stay safe as tensions continue to rise in Mozambique. He said:

My advice is that our people should stay indoors until the situation normalises. They should keep away from the demonstrations. Many people prefer to be indoors.
I think likewise Zimbabweans should do the same. They should try as much as they can to avoid gatherings, to make sure that they are safe.
We have not seen or heard of any Zimbabwean who got injured or killed in Mozambique. I would like to advise Zimbabweans who are in Mozambique that they should not forget that they are in a foreign land.
They should stay in their homes and not get involved in the protests. When they see people gathering or grouping they should try to avoid those gatherings. Once violence starts, it will not distinguish a local from a foreigner.

For Zimbabweans who want to travel to Mozambique for business, Matemadanda warned that they might face transport challenges.
Next week, Zimbabwe will host an Extraordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government in Harare where the recent general elections in Mozambique and Botswana will be discussed.
Botswana held peaceful elections on 30 October and the winner, Duma Boko, an opposition candidate, was inaugurated on Friday, November 8.
However, in Mozambique which held elections exactly a month ago, the winner of the presidential race, FRELIMO’s Daniel Chapo, is yet to be inaugurated amid unending protests across the country over alleged rigging of the vote.

Matemadanda Urges Zimbabweans In Mozambique To Stay Indoors

Many Zimbabweans are happy about recent changes made by the South African government to speed up the visa process and digitise documents in the Department of Home Affairs.
They believe this will give them another chance to remain working in South Africa.
Gabriel Shumba, a Zimbabwean lawyer and director at Global Immigration and Legal Consultancy, welcomed the move, saying it is good news for migrants looking to stay in South Africa. Said Shumba (via <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200034595/zimbos-hail-new-sa-visa-regime">Southern Eye</a>):

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs recently established five immigration targets aimed at reducing waiting times for immigration visa processes for the upcoming financial year. It said:

Zimbabweans Welcome South Africa’s Visa Application Overhaul

The Zimbabwean government is in talks with South Africa about its citizens who may be deported after their ZEP permits expire.
South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber recently announced that 19,750 undocumented immigrants were deported, costing the government nearly R52.8 million (about US$3 million).
Zimbabwe has the highest number of illegal immigrants in South Africa, with over 7,000 Zimbabweans deported in 2022/2023.
In the Senate on Wednesday, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said the government is in talks with South African officials over the planned deportations of undocumented citizens. He said (via <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200034038/govt-engages-sa-over-deportations">NewsDay</a>):

South Africa has its own laws that govern their own immigration. What we can do as a government is to ensure that the needs of our people, wherever possible, are governed by the bilateral relations that we have, that we can assist them.
The issue of Zimbabweans in South Africa is that the South African government has decided that they no longer want to renew the permits that were given after 2008, they said that they wanted to remove them.
So, we wait to see whether the South Africans will be amenable to negotiating to have our people who have been staying there stay but are within the jurisdiction of the South African Government.
We have held negotiations, but it is something that is not very easy to tell the government to say, you must take our citizens and give them work; however, diplomatic and bilateral discussions between our Foreign Affairs ministry and their Department of International Relations are on-going.

ZEP was introduced by the South African Department of Home Affairs to regularize the status of undocumented Zimbabweans living in South Africa.
Under the ZEP, approximately 178,000 Zimbabwean nationals who arrived in South Africa before 2009 could apply for a permit, allowing them to reside and work legally in the country.
Initially valid for four years, the ZEP has been extended, with the new permits now valid until 29 November 2025.
However, holders of the ZEP are not eligible for permanent residence status, and the permits are not renewable.

Zimbabwe Engages South Africa Over Looming Deportations After ZEP Permit Expiry

Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono suggests that South Africa should document illegal immigrants as a long-term solution to immigration problems, rather than deporting them.
This recommendation follows a statement by South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber, who revealed that 19,750 undocumented immigrants were deported, costing the government R52,817,656 (US$2,995,289.27).
Since January 2022, South Africa has spent almost R200 million on deporting 83,731 illegal immigrants.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2024-10-23-r52m-on-deportation-is-a-waste-document-migrants-instead-zimbabwes-hopewell-chinono/">TimesLive</a>, Chin’ono described this expenditure as a “waste of money,” arguing that deported immigrants are likely to return to South Africa.
He suggested that documenting illegal immigrants could address various issues, including unemployment.
This is despite complaints from South Africans about foreigners “taking their jobs,” often due to companies exploiting undocumented workers for cheap labour. Said Chin’ono:

The only way out, to help South African workers who refuse to work for a pittance in restaurants, and rightly so, is to legalise those already in South Africa so the authorities know who they are.
Implement regulations ensuring these workers can be employed and pay taxes, but also make sure jobs must be offered to South Africans first. They do that in Zimbabwe with the few jobs available, and that is standard practice the world over.
Where no South African is willing to take up the job, it can be offered to a documented migrant who will be paying taxes.
When illegal immigrants are documented and have bank accounts they will begin to pay taxes and can also become entrepreneurial, creating businesses that will employ more South Africans and contribute to economic growth.
</blockquote>
Chin’ono added that documenting illegal immigrants and gathering their biometric data would also reduce crime, as undocumented immigrants could commit crimes without being identified.
He criticized South African politicians for using the issue to win votes without offering practical solutions. 
Chin’ono reiterated that documenting immigrants would facilitate better border control and provide a comprehensive approach to managing immigration. Said Chin’ono:

These illegal immigrants are deported on a Monday and by Friday they are back. This is known as the revolving door.
The border officials are so corrupt they facilitate this revolving door because they profit from it, so you cannot use immigration control to deal with this on land borders where people come by road.
Some illegal immigrants do not even leave South Africa because the police who arrest them will also accept bribes.
Refusing to document illegals, hoping deportations will solve the problem demonstrates incompetence and ignorance about how illegal immigration works.
It is easy to control the border when you have cleaned up the existing problem. It requires men and women in leadership with a spine.

South Africa Should Document, Not Deport, Illegal Immigrants - Hopewell Chin'ono

A Zimbabwean couple was reportedly assaulted and their car vandalised by a mob following an accident on Sunday evening in Beta 2, Greater Noida, India.
According to the <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/noida-news/gr-noida-4-booked-as-zimbabwean-couple-assaulted-over-accident-101728326341899.html">Hindustan Times</a>, Michael and his wife Amma, known by their first names, work for a private company and live in a rented apartment in Sector Xu, Greater Noida.
After the incident, they filed a complaint at the Beta-2 police station, which led to the registration of an FIR.
Viddhyut Goyal, the station house officer (SHO) at Beta-2 police station, stated that Michael was driving in the wrong lane at the time of the accident. He said:

On Sunday evening, when Michael and Amma were going in their car to run some errands, he accidentally hit the motorcycle of a deliveryman, identified as Aryan, 25, who was coming from the opposite side.

Following the collision, a heated argument broke out between Michael and Aryan, a resident of Beta 2, and later other deliverymen joined him. Added Goyal:

A mob, including the deliverymen, allegedly assaulted Michael and broke the windshield and window glasses of his car.

As tensions escalated, a bystander alerted the police by calling the emergency helpline number 112.
A team from a nearby police station was dispatched to help de-escalate the situation, and officers successfully rescued Michael and his wife.
A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the couple did not sustain any injuries during the incident.
A case under sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 351 (criminal intimidation), 324 (causes the destruction of any property), and 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered against the delivery boy and three unidentified people at Beta 2 police station.

A Zimbabwean lecturer based in South Africa is suing his employer for allegedly underpaying him for the past six years.
Nhlanhla Moses Ncube, originally from Nkayi in Matabeleland North, currently works as a lecturer in the community education and training sector under the Department of Higher Education and Training in South Africa.
In an interview with <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200033229/zim-teacher-in-sa-court-over-salary">Southern Eye</a>, Ncube confirmed that his labour dispute is now in court. He said:

I am currently underpaid as I am being paid for diploma-level expertise despite having acquired two bachelor’s degrees. I am still struggling to get my money.
In South Africa, you can take the employer to court and possibly win the case.
I am currently taking my employer to court over unpaid monies that the employer owes me.
I am using the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit which I acquired through the asylum seeker permit.
It was easy to get it because it was a politically negotiated settlement.

The court case is currently pending, awaiting a scheduled hearing.
Ncube, who was a teacher at a secondary school in Zimbabwe, left the country in 2007 at the height of the hyperinflation crisis. He said:

Working and living conditions in Zimbabwe were far below reasonable expectations.
The environment was parallel to forced labour because we were not allowed to protest against exploitation by the employer. Protesting against slave wages was treated as a crime.
We experienced hell but abandoning my job in Zimbabwe was not easy due to the patriotism I have towards my community.

Zimbabwe’s top sprinter, Tapiwanashe Makarawu, has been honoured in the City of Hobbs, New Mexico, United States of America, where September 3 has been officially designated to celebrate his achievements on the track.
Makarawu finished sixth in the men’s 200m final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, crossing the finish line in 20.10 seconds. The gold medal was claimed by Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, who set an impressive time of 19.46 seconds.

The Zimbabwe Consulate in Johannesburg is finalising the repatriation process for some of the 15 Zimbabweans who tragically died in two separate road accidents in South Africa within a week.
In the first incident, ten Zimbabweans lost their lives when a Mzansi Express bus, travelling from Bulawayo to Johannesburg, overturned near Makhado town in Limpopo Province last Tuesday. The accident also left 35 people injured.
The second accident occurred on Sunday near Mokopane town in the same province, involving a Tamuka Coaches bus, which resulted in the deaths of five more Zimbabweans.
Zimbabwe Consul-General Eria Phiri visited the scene of the Mokopane accident on Monday and later went to the hospitals to meet with the injured. He said (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/tamuka-bus-accident-latest-bodies-identified-repatriation-process-underway/">The Herald</a>):

The Tamuka Coaches bus was carrying 58 passengers and four crew members. It was involved in an accident 8 km before Mokopane tollgate in the Limpopo Province. Five perished on the scene of the accident including the driver.

Phiri said 10 of the injured passengers were admitted at Mokopane Hospital where six were treated and discharged. He added:

Two others (one female and one male) are still admitted and of the 10 patients, two requested to be transferred to a medical facility in Johannesburg close to relatives and the request was granted by hospital authorities.
The rest who had no injuries proceeded with the journey to Zimbabwe.
Voortrekker Hospital admitted 24 and all were treated and discharged.

Phiri revealed that out of the five bodies, four have been positively identified by their relatives, while one male body remains unidentified.
He said the repatriation process for the four identified bodies has already begun. They expect that most of those who perished in the Makhado accident will be repatriated to Zimbabwe for burial by Friday.
In a separate incident, the body of Kudzai Ncube Ndlovhu, who was tragically shot and killed by a white farmer in South Africa’s Limpopo Province and whose remains were disposed of in a pigsty, was repatriated on Monday evening for burial in Manoti, Gokwe South District.
