ZIFA Electoral Committee chairperson Lincoln Mutasa has defended the disqualification of several candidates from running in the elections scheduled for January 25, 2025, arguing that the committee is not introducing new rules but is simply “sticking to the book” in its decision-making.
Farai Jere, Walter Magaya, Themba Mliswa, and Benjani Mwaruwari were disqualified from contesting the ZIFA presidency after failing to meet the eligibility requirements.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/mutasa-speaks-out-as-jere-backs-down/">Zimpapers Sports Hub</a> on Tuesday, Mutasa explained that the Normalisation Committee, which is acting as the Electoral Committee for these elections, is adhering to the amended ZIFA constitution and the association’s electoral code. He said:

We have not invented the rules and regulations. As the Electoral Committee, we are just following what the ZIFA Congress wants.
We are implementing the rules given to us by the Congress regarding a lot of issues, including the issue of 5 O’ Levels. We are trying to stick to the book.

According to Mutasa, those who wish to challenge the disqualification decisions can file their appeals with the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport, in accordance with Article 85(9) of the ZIFA constitution.
The vetting process, which all aspiring candidates underwent, was conducted with the support of the Ethics Committee, chaired by Muchadeyi Masunda.

Mutasa Defends ZIFA's Vetting Process

Former Hurungwe West and Norton MP, Temba Mliswa has warned Zimbabwean football fans that the administration of the sport in the country has been taken over by a powerful and corrupt cabal, with money playing a central role.
Mliswa, PHD Ministries founder Walter Magaya, PSL chairman Farai Jere, and Warriors legend Benjani Mwaruwari, were barred from running for the ZIFA Presidency in a month by the ZIFA Electoral Committee.
Six candidates—businessman Nqobile Magwizi, Northern Region Soccer League chairperson Martin Kweza, former ZIFA board member Philemon Machana, Team Zimbabwe UK CEO Marshal Gore, former PSL chairperson Twine Phiri, and former footballer Makwinje Phiri—have successfully passed the integrity test and are eligible to run for the ZIFA presidency.
Mliswa further said that this cabal has not limited its influence to football alone, but has also targeted rugby and cricket. He said:

Many have missed the forest for the trees in the ZIFA saga. The minutiae of individual candidates such as myself, removed from contesting, is a mere addendum to the actual conspiracy by an elite clique intent on capturing the whole football sector.
It’s a plot which is playing before national eyes but many have missed it. As I have previously stated, my ambition and goal isn’t just to enter the fray and iron out things but to stop the serious capture which many are overlooking.
We have already seen the same with rugby where Mtongwiza is enjoying unparalleled profligacy and wanton control.
The very letter by one, Kufa, alleging why I shouldn’t stand had internal documents, minutes from ZRU meetings, which are supposed to be confidential.
It’s a brazen revelation of collusion between varied people working to undermine the emergence of independent &amp; intrepid minds like myself in the ZIFA ecosystem.
The same was tried with Cricket but ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani was strong enough to resist such criminal overtures.
Now they have come to football. Under the guise of an SRC-sanctioned vetting process proxies have been allowed through while some of us, deemed ungovernable and uncontrollable, have been swiftly supplanted by dolls with hidden puppeteers.

Mliswa claimed that among the six candidates allowed to contest the ZIFA presidency, most are mere proxies strategically positioned to further elitist objectives, primarily focused on the large-scale misappropriation of resources. He said:

Many of those remaining are mere proxies strategically placed to advance the elitist objectives central of which will be the massive pilfering of resources.
The vetting, judging by the names remaining, was a literal handpicking of convenient and pliable candidates.
Therefore we should be careful not to amateurishly redact this scandal into a fiasco about Temba being removed but comprehend the full conspiracy which entails a long game to disembowel the football sector.
Tentacles are already spreading as reflected by the MWOS and Scotland saga where money was the chief player.
Dubious characters with questionable conduct in the running in the game have been kept all at the expense of the game. It’s a complete fiasco and funeral for national football.

The MWOS and Scottland FC promotion saga centred around the fierce competition between the two teams in the Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) for a coveted spot in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). As the season drew to a close, both teams were locked in a tight race, with each vying for promotion.
Scottland FC, owned by Pedzisai “Scott” Sakupwanya, reportedly offered significant financial incentives to its players to secure the championship.
Meanwhile, MWOS FC became embroiled in allegations of match-fixing, with claims that some of their players were approached by soccer legends to throw games, ultimately benefiting Scottland in their pursuit of the title.
The situation came to a head when Scottland FC was awarded maximum points from an abandoned match against Karoi United.
This controversial decision propelled them to the top of the table, allowing Scottland to secure promotion to the PSL.

Six other people passed tests to run, but Mliswa says they are just puppets for the bad people. This group also has power in rugby and cricket. Mliswa warns that they are stealing resources and harming the game. There was a big fight between MWOS and Scottland FC in the lower league, with accusations of cheating and bribes. Scottland FC got promoted to a higher league after controversial decisions.

Mliswa Claims Corrupt Cabal Has Taken Over Football Administration In Zimbabwe

Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairperson Farai Jere has accepted the ZIFA Ethics Committee’s decision to bar him from contesting the Executive Committee elections on January 25.
Jere, along with former Member of Parliament Temba Mliswa, Walter Magaya, and former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari, was excluded from the ZIFA election race.
Jere, who is the Member of Parliament for Murehwa West (ZANU PF), told <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/jere-accepts-zifa-verdict/">ZBC News</a> on Tuesday that he had written to ZIFA requesting an explanation for his exclusion from the contest. He said:

I got the response this morning. ZIFA explained to me that I submitted my notice of name change late when FIFA governance had already concluded the vetting process.
Before 2000, I used the name Farai Mutimbo and all my Ordinary and Advanced Level certificates bear that name.
Then I officially changed to Farai Jere in 2000 and my tertiary qualifications have that name, so the clarity came, but I was disappointed that they could have requested the notice in time and I could also be contested, but remember, everything happens for a reason.

When asked why he is not exercising his right to appeal, Jere said that his focus is on ensuring that football comes out as the winner. Said Jere:
<blockquote>
I am a leader so I have to make decisions not just for myself. I want football to be the winner, not Jere. So if I appeal it means that it’s an emergency interdict to stop the elections until my case is heard.
My case is simple and I can easily win it, but the time that will take means I will delay the elections, so is that good for our football?
I am a Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sports chairperson, so I can’t be seen delaying the elections. 
Zimbabwean football needs to heal and move forward to start afresh with new leadership, so I am allowing that to happen because football must come first and football must be the winner.

Other candidates, including Benjani Mwaruwari, have also been seeking answers from ZIFA, and all four candidates have reportedly received explanations regarding their exclusion from the race.
Under the new ZIFA statutes, any aggrieved party has the right to appeal to a higher body. However, since the vetting and integrity checks were conducted and forwarded to FIFA’s Governance, Audit, and Compliance Committee, all appeals must now be directed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Farai Jere, who wanted to run for a position in the soccer committee, cannot run in January because he missed a deadline to change his name on some documents. Jere is okay with this decision because he thinks it is more important for soccer to be successful. Other people who were also denied a spot have been given reasons for their exclusion. Jere, along with notable figures such as Twine Phiri, Walter Magaya, Temba Mliswa, and Benjani Mwaruwari, did not meet the eligibility criteria and were therefore excluded from the final list of candidates for the ZIFA presidency.
Jere contested his exclusion, asserting that he was unjustly dismissed from the race, as he possesses the required five O Level passes.
However, a leaked letter from ZIFA National Committee chairman Lincoln Mutasa indicated that the issue stemmed from discrepancies in the submitted certificates, including a name mismatch, which was corrected after the deadline. Reads the letter in part:

I regret to inform you that, following the integrity checks required for candidacy in the upcoming Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Executive Committee elections, it has been determined that you have not met the necessary criteria to proceed as a candidate. This was done to ensure all my nomination documentation is accurate and complete, as my O level and A level certificates submitted contain my former surname Mutimbo whereas my University First Degree and Masters of Business Administration transcripts contain the surname Jere.
If this was not a factor in your decision-making, I believe it is essential to understand the reasons behind your decision.
I hold high and esteemed offices and do not want my name to be sullied by misconceptions that I do not have 5 O levels.
I therefore kindly ask for a detailed explanation of the considerations that led to this outcome.
I would appreciate receiving this information at your earliest convenience, preferably before Christmas.

ZIFA Announces Eligible Candidates For Upcoming Elections; Magaya, Mliswa Fail Test

The ZIFA Ethics and Integrity Committee, working with the Normalisation Committee (NC), is set to announce today, December 23, the names of candidates vying for positions on the ZIFA Board in the upcoming elections.
The elections, which are scheduled for January 25, 2025, will mark the end of the NC’s term, paving the way for a new board elected by councillors to take over the governance of football in Zimbabwe.
Since the dismissal of the Felton Kamambo board on April 23, 2022, ZIFA has functioned without a substantive board. Gift Banda, who temporarily filled the position, served until July 11, 2023, when FIFA appointed the NC, chaired by Lincoln Mutasa.
In July, FIFA extended the terms of three NC members: chairman Mutasa, legal expert Nyasha Samanyandwe, and women’s football icon Rosemary Mugadza.
Cynthia Malaba, who managed the finance portfolio, concluded her role after establishing the necessary structures and policies.
Similarly, Sikhumbuzo Ndebele stepped down after successfully filling the positions of technical director and head of coach education.
The roadmap leading to the ZIFA elections included an annual general meeting on November 22, where the draft constitution was adopted.
The elections will be conducted in accordance with this new constitution, which stipulates that the president and male deputy must possess at least O-level qualifications.
Following the meeting, the nomination process opened on December 4 and closed on December 11. ZIFA set December 23 as the date for announcing candidates who have passed rigorous integrity and ethics checks, which involved verification with educational institutions and police clearances.
Once the candidate list is published, individuals will be allowed to commence their official campaigns, with final confirmations scheduled for January 15, 2025.
Among those running for the ZIFA presidency are Nqobile Magwizi, Benjani Mwaruwari, Farai Jere, Marshall Gore, Martin Kweza, Twine Phiri, Philemon Machana, Temba Mliswa, and Makwinji Soma-Phiri.
For the vice presidency, candidates include Gift Banda, Peter Dube, Kennedy Ndebele, Omega Sibanda, and James Takavada.
The new constitution also provides for a female vice-president, with potential candidates including Loveness Mukura, Mavis Gumbo, Joyce Kapota, Patience Mutumwa, Winnet Muropa, and Beaullah Msara.

ZIFA Normalisation Committee Set To Release Candidate List

Scottland Football Club has received a US$1 million donation from IMC Communications, an organisation fronted by Wicknell Chivayo.
The donation was announced on Friday night, just one day after the club secured a US$1.5 million annual sponsorship from Sakunda Holdings, owned by Kuda Tagwirei.
Scottland is owned by ZANU PF Member of Parliament, Pedzai Sakupwanya, who represents Mabvuku-Tafara in the National Assembly.
At the presentation of the US$1 million donation, Ecobank senior executive Mike Dengwane, who represented Chivayo, said the funds would assist the club in the construction of a new stadium. Said Dengwane:

Your network is your net worth if I can say. I congratulate you Sakupwanya for receiving this massive boost.
The US$1 million is for the team and also helping in the construction of the Mabvuku Stadium which you have undertaken to do.
We know the stadium will not be used by Scottland only. It is for the whole community and the whole catchment area of Mabvuku including Tafara, Ruwa, ZIMRE Park, Eastview, Epworth and Msasa.
We wish you all the best in the league and I can assure you that this sponsorship is not a once-off thing.
We will continue to chip in and make sure you achieve whatever you have set out to achieve.

Scottland chairman Tonderai Sakupwanya thanked Chivayo for the gesture. He said:

And when I say that, we are looking at the stadium in Mabvuku, we are looking at programmes that help the youths.

Scottland is the third team in the Premier Soccer League owned by a sitting ZANU PF MP. The other two are CAPS United, owned by Farai Jere, and Herentals, owned by Innocent Benza.
However, the rise of both Sakupwanya and Scottland has been surrounded by controversy. Sakupwanya was elected unopposed in a by-election after the incumbent MP was recalled and later barred from contesting just hours before the polls opened.
Scottland’s journey has also been marred by a disputed decision in the Northern Region Soccer League.
The league’s boardroom ruling, which was later ratified by the ZIFA Disciplinary Committee, declared Scottland as champions after Karoi United contested the result of their abandoned match.

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced on Thursday that it has acquired 1.4 hectares of land in Borrowdale Estates, Harare, to build its first permanent headquarters.
Outgoing PSL chairman Farai Jere, whose term ends on December 31, announced the development during the unveiling of a plaque at the construction site.
The project will include modern offices, a training centre, a football pitch, a conference facility, and residential apartments. It will also house offices for women’s football. He said:

This is a historic moment. For over 32 years, the league has operated without a permanent base. This development signifies a new era for Zimbabwean football.
This site will serve as a home for the PSL, honouring the legacy of past players and administrators while paving the way for sustainable development.

The green shirts were initially donated in 2022, but due to a “variety of reasons,” it took two years for them to be shipped and distributed.
The items eventually arrived in Takavarasha, Zimbabwe, where they are now being used by teenagers at Muzondo High School. Kit Aid said:

Chelsea’s teenage sensation, Shumaira Mheuka, who has Zimbabwean heritage, made an impressive debut for the club’s senior team on Thursday night, despite the freezing conditions, during their 3-1 victory over Astana in the UEFA Conference League.
Head coach Enzo Maresca introduced Mheuka in the 78th minute, replacing Marc Guiu, and he played a pivotal role for the remainder of the match.
Born to Zimbabwean parents, Mheuka is eligible to represent both England and Zimbabwe. He is the son of Malcolm Mheuka, a former player in Zimbabwe’s top-flight league for Zimbabwe Saints and Circle Cement.
Mheuka quickly ascended through the ranks of the Chelsea Academy after joining the Blues from Brighton &amp; Hove Albion at the end of his Under-14 season.
Throughout the 2023/24 campaign, he regularly featured for the Under-18s while still a schoolboy, scoring 12 goals in 20 appearances across all competitions.

This decision was made during the FIFA Extraordinary Congress meeting held on Wednesday, where Morocco, Spain, and Portugal were also confirmed as co-hosts of the 2030 World Cup, with celebration matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.
The 2034 edition will feature the first-ever 48-team tournament in a single host country, with matches planned across 15 stadiums in five cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, Khobar, Abha, and Neom.
King Salman Stadium in Riyadh, expected to have a capacity of 92,000, is likely to host both the opening and final matches once completed.
The Saudi bid received widespread acclaim from over 200 FIFA member federations during the virtual meeting hosted by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Zurich.
The decision to award the tournament to Saudi Arabia came after the bid was unopposed, leading to criticism from fan groups who claim FIFA manipulated the voting process.
Traditionally, the 211 member nations choose a host through a single vote, but this time they voted simultaneously for both the 2030 and 2034 tournaments.
While Spain, Portugal, and Morocco were selected as joint hosts for 2030, with games also being held in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, concerns have been raised about the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia.

Magaya said that Chahwanda Stadium will be a “magnified and transformed version” of The Heart Stadium in Waterfalls, Harare.
He has set a target to complete the project by the end of January 2025, in time for the start of the next domestic premier league season.
The successful completion of the project could see the return of premier league football to Kwekwe, a city that was once home to famous clubs such as Lancashire Steel, ZISCO Steel, and Kwekwe Cables.
A local team, Kwekwe United, won promotion to the PSL and could be the first to use Chahwanda Stadium — The Heart Main Arena — as its home ground next season.

English Premier League referee David Coote was dismissed on Monday after an investigation into his conduct deemed his position untenable.
Coote was suspended on November 12 while the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) investigated offensive comments he made about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.
UEFA has launched its own investigation into Coote after a video allegedly showed him using cocaine during the European Championship.
The Football Association is also investigating Coote for allegedly discussing the possibility of issuing a yellow card to a player with a fan.
Coote denies all allegations against him.
The PGMOL issued a statement saying Coote’s employment has been terminated with immediate effect following the conclusion of its investigation.
The referees’ body said Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable.
Coote has the right to appeal the termination decision.
Two videos surfaced showing a person who appears to be Coote making derogatory comments about Liverpool and Klopp, with unclear details about when they were filmed and their authenticity.
The person used an expletive for Liverpool and a derogatory term for Klopp, saying he disliked the German manager because he was arrogant and accused me of lying after one game.
It remains unclear when the footage was recorded or if it has been altered.
In a shorter clip filmed afterwards, the two participants stressed the importance of not sharing the footage.

Simba Bhora captain Walter Musona is on track to become the second player to win the Soccer Star of the Year accolade twice with different teams if he wins tonight. He previously won the title in 2022 with FC Platinum.

Opposition politician Linda Masarira has called on Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) councillors to vote for Temba Mliswa as the next ZIFA president.
Masarira, leader of the LEAD party, argued that Mliswa is the most capable candidate to lead ZIFA into a new era of accountability, professionalism, and growth.
Mliswa is a village head, former ZANU PF Mashonaland West chairman, and former Norton MP.
Masarira praised Mliswa’s no-nonsense approach, and his deep involvement in the sporting sector, saying he has a proven track record of delivering results, positioning him as the ideal leader to revive Zimbabwean football. Said Masarira:

Mutami, who is based in Australia and shares a child, Tinotenda, with Mliswa, also criticised him for being an irresponsible father.
She claimed that Mliswa has never contributed financially to the upbringing of their son.

 In a post on X, she claimed that he has never contributed a single cent towards the upbringing of their son, Tinotenda.

Mliswa has fathered more than 12 children with various women, and his breakup with Mutami was paid out on social media. Wrote Mutami:

Susan Mutami Warns Against Electing Temba Mliswa As ZIFA President

At least nine candidates have formally expressed their interest in running for the ZIFA presidency in the upcoming election scheduled for January 25.
The vetting process, to be conducted by the ZIFA normalisation committee, will determine candidate eligibility, with results announced on December 23.
Among the candidates are UK-based Marshall Gore, Walter Magaya, Philemon Machana, Twine Phiri, Farai Jere, Martin Kweza, Temba Mliswa, Gilbert Muponda, and Nqobile Magwizi.
Nominations opened on November 22 and will close on December 11, after which the vetting will commence.
ZIFA councillors will elect a president, two deputies (one must be a woman), and six additional board members. The Premier Soccer League chairperson and the women’s football leader will also join the board.
Several candidates are vying for the two vice president posts, with one reserved for a woman.
Former Ngezi Platinum Stars chief executive officer Nyasha Kadenge, former ZIFA board member Mavis Gumbo, Loveness Mukura, former CAPS United administrator Joyce Kapota, Patience Mutumwa and Winnet Muropa intend to contest for the post.
Contenders include former ZIFA board vice-president Omega Sibanda and others like Gift Banda, Peter Dube, and Kennedy Ndebele.
For the six board member posts, candidates include Francis Zimunya, former Warriors team manager Shariff Mussa, former ZIFA spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela, Northern Region Division One Soccer League vice-chairperson Sweeney Mushonga, Andrew Tapela, Kudzai Kadzombe, Thomas Marambanyika, Admore Chivero, Gaza Dube and Desmond Ali.
Chicken Inn boss Tavengwa Hara is also in the running together with Tizirayi Lupahla, former Warriors team doctor Nicholas Munyonga, Tinashe Malunga, Davison Muchena, Masimba Chihowa of Manica Diamonds and Cuthbert Chitima who used to own Gunners Football Club.
Simba Bhora chairman Isaiah Mupfurutsa is on the list together with club owner Simba Ndoro, Former Warriors’ striker Alois Bunjira, and Derrick Matapura.
Women vying for board membership include Miriam Sibanda, Beaular Masara, and Christine Ndou.

Nine Candidates Vie For ZIFA Presidency

President Emmerson Mnangagwa hosted the Zimbabwe senior men’s football team at State House on Tuesday, December 03, to celebrate their qualification for the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco, scheduled for December next year.
During the event, Mnangagwa presented each player with a cash reward of US$6,500. Several players attended, including Khama Billiat, Richard Hachiro, Brian Banda, Tymon Machope, Donovan Bernard, Emmanuel Jalai, Martin Mapisa, Walter Musona, Washington Arubi, Godknows Murwira, Obriel Chirinda, and Teenage Hadebe.
Although some members of the team who contributed to this achievement have since returned to their clubs abroad, they will still receive their share of the reward.
The technical team, led by German coach Michael Nees, also received the same cash bonus.
In the 2025 budget, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube allocated US$1 million to support the Warriors’ preparations and participation in the AFCON finals.
In his speech at the congratulatory event, Mnangagwa praised the team’s qualification for the tournament, saying they are an inspiration to other young athletes. He said:

As a token of appreciation, the Warriors presented Mnangagwa with a signed number 18 jersey.
Zimbabwe secured their spot in the 2025 AFCON finals last month, finishing as the second-best team in Group J, which included leaders Cameroon, as well as Kenya and Namibia.

Speaking at Faramatsi Motors, where he was collecting his brand-new Toyota Fortuner from Chivayo, Chunga, recently returned from Belgium, scoffed at the notion that he should feel guilty about accepting the gift. He said:

Tongaat Huletts-financed Triangle FC has secured promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after defeating Rusitu Tigers FC 1-0 in the final round of the Eastern Region Soccer League (ERSL) at Gibbo Stadium on Sunday.
Under coach Luke Masomere, Triangle FC made a remarkable recovery after trailing FC Wangu Mazodze by 17 points midway through the season, eventually surpassing the Richard Mazodze-owned club with a better goal difference.
Both Triangle FC and FC Wangu Mazodze finished the season with 72 points.

A relative of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, identified as Albert Garikai Mnangagwa, is accused of terrorising villagers in Mashonaland West Province over gold mining claims.
Sources told <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/president-mnangagwas-relative-terrorizes-villagers-grabs-gold-mine-sparking-solo-protest/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> on Sunday that Albert, along with a group of armed men, descended on a lucrative gold mine project in Makonde district, designated for ZANU PF youths, and began looting the precious mineral.
Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs Minister Marian Chombo, ZANU PF Provincial Chairperson Mary Mliswa-Chikoka, provincial police officials, and the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development officials have reportedly been alerted to the situation.
It is alleged that unidentified gunmen have been patrolling the area to intimidate the local youths, who are organizing to resist the takeover of the mine.
One affected youth, who wished to remain anonymous, staged a solo protest in Makonde over the weekend, displaying placards with various messages of resistance. One of the placards was written:
