On Friday, 28 March 2025, fifteen people tragically lost their lives in separate road traffic accidents in Norton, Chegutu, and Mutare.
One of the accidents occurred around 4:25 PM on the Harare-Bulawayo Road, when a Nissan Caravan kombi, carrying 20 passengers, veered off the road and overturned. Seven people were killed, and twelve others were injured in the crash.
Another accident, also along the same road, happened just after 5:30 PM and resulted in the deaths of three people.
In Chegutu, two people were killed, and nine others were injured in a separate accident.
Meanwhile, in Mutare, a Volvo haulage truck, carrying three passengers, also veered off the road and overturned, leading to the deaths of three people.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accidents in a statement. It reads:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms four fatal road traffic accidents which occurred in Norton, Chegutu and Mutare, in which 15 people were killed on 28th March 2025.
In one of the road traffic accidents, seven people were killed while 12 others were injured when a Nissan Caravan kombi with 20 passengers on board veered off the road and overturned before landing on its left side at the 30 kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road at around 1625 hours.
As a result, three adults and an infant died on the spot while three others succumbed to the injuries upon admission at Norton Hospital.
In another accident which occurred at the 85 kilometre peg along Harare – Bulawayo Road at around 1732 hours, three people were killed while two others were injured when a Chevrolet Trail Blazer vehicle with five passengers on board collided with a Toyota Hilux vehicle with seven passengers on board.
The Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicle had allegedly tried to overtake the Toyota Hilux vehicle, which was turning right. S
ubsequently, the Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicle hit the Toyota Hilux vehicle on the right lamp. The Toyota Hilux vehicle overturned before landing on its left side.
Two injured victims were admitted at Chegutu General Hospital.
Meanwhile, two people were killed while nine others were injured when a Toyota Toace truck with eleven passengers on board veered off the road at a curve along Pickstone-Burn Bank Road, Chegutu, at around 1545 hours.
As a result, all the passengers in the loading box were thrown out of the vehicle. The bodies of the victims were taken to Chegutu General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
In Mutare, three people were killed when a Volvo haulage truck with three passengers on board veered off the road and overturned before landing on its roof at around 1030 hours along the Harare-Mutare road near the Wise Owl turn-off.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores motorists to observe all road rules and regulations and exercise extreme caution to safeguard lives on the roads.
Drivers should be patient, observant, and avoid speeding and overtaking in situations where it is not safe to do so.

ZIMSTAT reported that the weighted month-on-month inflation rate for March 2025 stood at 0.0 percent, reflecting a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from the February 2025 rate of 0.3 percent. Said ZIMSTAT:

ZIMSTAT reported that the Food Poverty Line (FPL) for one person in March 2025 was ZWG 864.20. The FPL represents the amount of money an individual needs to afford a daily minimum energy intake of 2,100 calories. ZIMSTAT calculates the poverty line using the consumer basket for an individual deemed to be extremely poor.
The Total Consumption Poverty Line (TCPL) for one person was ZWG 1,260.52 in March 2025. The TCPL is derived by adding the non-food consumption expenditures of an individual deemed to be extremely poor to the FPL.
When monthly inflation drops to 0%, it means that prices for goods and services have stayed the same, with no noticeable increase or decrease compared to the previous month. Essentially, the cost of living hasn’t changed.
While 0% inflation might seem good, it could be a sign of weak economic activity and may lead to stagnation or even deflation (a decrease in prices).
For most countries, a small amount of inflation (around 2–3%) is considered healthy, as it shows the economy is growing without causing big price changes.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned motorists that any vehicle operating without displayed number plates will be impounded by the police as per the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act (Chapter 13:14).
In a statement issued on Friday, 28 March, ZRP spokesperson Paul Nyathi said the impounded vehicles will only be released after completing the necessary registration process with the relevant authorities.
Nyathi stressed that the law applies to all vehicles, whether family-owned, public, company, government, or private vehicles.
He also warned that vehicle owners, sellers, and buyers will be held accountable if the vehicle is used in any criminal activities while not complying with registration laws. The statement reads:

Vehicle owners, sellers, and buyers will be held accountable for the commission of any criminal act by suspects using vehicles which are not complying with provisions of Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act, chapter 13:14.

Police To Impound Vehicles Without Number Plates

Former ZANU PF Mashonaland West chairman Temba Mliswa has warned that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) risks becoming a mercenary unit that can be paid to fight private battles.
Mliswa made these comments following the recent arrest of Owen Madondo, also known as DJ Ollah 7, for alleged cyberbullying. 
The allegations stemmed from remarks made by guest Mukudzei Chatsama, better known as Holy Ten, during a podcast, which Mudiwa Hood claimed caused him distress and humiliation.
However, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided not to pursue charges after determining that Madondo, as the podcast host, did not intend to harass or bully. 
The NPA said the comments were made by Madondo’s guest during a live broadcast, and therefore, Madondo could not be held responsible for the alleged harm.
Mliswa, sharing a picture of himself with DJ Ollah 7, suggested that some police officers might have been bribed to make the arrest. He wrote on X:

We are currently experiencing a wave of monied people paying the police to arrest their supposed adversaries.
The ZRP are reducing themselves into a mercenary unit which anyone can pay to fight private battles. We have seen the same with the Chimombe and Mpofu case.
The easy target would be to say it’s politics but it’s not. It’s simply someone with money using it to wage a private battle!

Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu have been in prison since June 2024, following their arrest on allegations of fraud. 
The arrest came after clashing with Wicknell Chivayo, during which they leaked conversations in which Chivayo allegedly boasted of having President Emmerson Mnangagwa in his pocket.

Temba Mliswa is worried that the police in Zimbabwe might start working as mercenaries for money, after DJ Ollah 7 got arrested. DJ Ollah 7 was accused of cyberbullying for something his guest said on a podcast. But the National Prosecuting Authority decided not to press charges. Mliswa thinks some police officers might have taken bribes for the arrest. He mentioned another case where people were arrested after a conflict with someone powerful. Mliswa is concerned that rich people are using money to fight their battles through the police.

Mliswa Says ZRP Risks Becoming Mercenaries After DJ Ollah 7's Arrest

Zimbabwe has seen an improvement in electricity supply this week, with many suburbs experiencing stable supply and some even enjoying zero load shedding over the past two days.
According to the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), total power generation in the country increased from 1,303MW on 26 March to 1,591MW on 27 March, and further to 1,622MW on 28 March 2025.
Hwange Thermal Power Station remains the leading producer, followed by Kariba South Power Station and independent power producers (IPPs).
On Friday, 28 March, Hwange was generating 1,066MW, Kariba contributed 485MW, and IPPs added 71MW.
This boost in power supply comes after a period of intensified load shedding caused by low water levels at Lake Kariba and maintenance work on Hwange Units 6 and 7. 
Unit 6, an older unit, has a capacity of 150MW, while Unit 7, one of two new units commissioned in 2023, generates 300MW.

Zimbabwe is making more electricity now. The power company said they made 1,622MW on 28 March, up from 1,303MW on 26 March. Hwange Thermal Power Station is doing the most, followed by Kariba South Power Station and independent power producers. On 28 March, Hwange made 1,066MW, Kariba made 485MW, and IPPs added 71MW. This good news comes after they had less power before because Lake Kariba had low water and Hwange needed maintenance. Unit 6 can make 150MW, and Unit 7 makes 300MW. Now, many suburbs have electricity without cutting it off.

Zimbabwe Records Increased Electricity Generation

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF SIMON MAZORODZE ROAD FROM HARARE DRIVE TO WILLOWVALE ROAD/ST GEORGE STREET
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development contracted Tensor Systems to upgrade, widen, and rehabilitate Harare-Masvingo Road.
The contractor is now working on the section from Harare Drive to Willowvale Road/St George’s Street along Simon Mazorodze Road.
The motoring public and other road users are hereby notified that the southbound and northbound carriageways along Simon Mazorodze Road from Harare Drive (Chinzou Roundabout) to Willowvale Road/St George’s Street will take turns to be closed for use by the motoring public starting 27 March 2025 until further notice.
This allows the contractor to rehabilitate this section of the road and construct a new bridge over the Willowvale Road/Simon Mazorodze Road junction.
All pedestrians and the motoring public who use the affected road are advised as follows:
A. Construction of the northbound (city-bound carriageway) – detours

<li>Citybound (or northbound) traffic may use Watts Road (the service road adjacent to Simon Mazorodze) by exiting Simon Mazorodze at the Chinzhou roundabout and joining the service lane. Traffic may shift back into Simon Mazorodze after the construction zone.</li>
<li>Alternatively, city-bound traffic may turn left onto Harare Drive, then right onto Willowvale Road, or continue to Highfield Road. Southbound (Masvingo-bound) traffic may continue using the southbound carriageway.</li>

<li>During this period, Watts shall operate as a one-way street.</li>
</ul>
B. Construction of the southbound (Masvingo-bound carriageway) – detours

Part Of Simon Mazorodze Road Closed For Upgrading, Widening And Rehabilitation [Full Statement]

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has condemned “chameleon-like” ZANU PF members who are allegedly threatening to sow chaos in the country, vowing to crush those planning to cause unrest.
Speaking at the 125th Central Committee meeting at the party headquarters in Harare on Thursday, March 27, Mnangagwa said, “These rogue opportunists will soon meet their fate.”
He also assured the public that security forces would be deployed nationwide to safeguard property and ensure the safety of all Zimbabweans. Said Mnangagwa:

To be a leader in our revolutionary mass party ZANU PF, is never an entitlement or a right. We must remain anchored on the commitment to wholeheartedly serve the people of our great motherland, Zimbabwe.
It is most unfortunate that a retrogressive trend has emerged, with some members of our party showing their ‘chameleon-like’ characters as willing accessories to our detractors for the purpose of desecrating our rich revolutionary heritage.
Their actions are an affront to the party’s principles and grossly taint our country’s image as well as the gains of our liberation struggle.
These rogue opportunists will soon meet their fate. The party and our peace-loving nation are commended for bravely standing firm against such treasonous acts of indiscipline.
People are called upon to go about their business as usual. Our State security infrastructure is in place to protect property and the safety of all Zimbabweans, from Plumtree to Mutare, Chirundu to Beitbridge.

The threats come in response to calls for mass protests on March 31, led by war veterans Blessed Geza and Andreas Mathibela.
Geza, Mathibela and their allies are pushing for Mnangagwa’s resignation, accusing him of corruption, nepotism, and economic mismanagement under his leadership.
The call for protests by Geza, a former ZANU PF Central Committee member, has gained traction, at least on social media, among disgruntled factions within ZANU PF, as well as ordinary Zimbabweans frustrated by worsening living conditions and economic hardships.
Mnangagwa, however, remains defiant, urging citizens to reject the protests and accusing the organisers of attempting to destabilise the nation.

President Mnangagwa is angry at some bad ZANU PF members who want to cause trouble in Zimbabwe. He says they will be stopped. He promises to protect everyone and their property. War veterans want protests on March 31 asking him to step down. Some people support the protests online. However, Mnangagwa says the protests are bad and will not help Zimbabwe. He wants people to ignore the protests and not join them. He says the protesters are trying to make Zimbabwe unstable.

Mnangagwa Vows to Crush "Chameleon-Like" ZANU PF Members

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called on vendors to resist being exploited by “criminal elements” and drug kingpins, while also appealing for an end to night vending.
The President met with vendors’ representatives at State House on Wednesday to listen to their concerns, following the government’s directive for local authorities to clear vendors from the streets.
The meeting comes just days before planned street protests on March 31, led by Blessed “Bombshell” Geza. The plan is to pressure Mnangagwa to step down from office. Said Mnangagwa:

I urge you as vendors to be alert and vigilant. Never allow the abuse of your sector by criminal elements and drug kingpins.
</blockquote>
Mnangagwa also urged vendors to cease night trading and to conduct their activities in an orderly manner. He said:
<blockquote>
We must have order, and as responsible citizens, we must never gloss over this matter. We must be honest that we cannot let the state of our country degenerate right under our eyes.
</blockquote>
Earlier this month, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe directed informal vendors to vacate unregulated trading areas and stop night trading. However, many vendors have disregarded the directive.
Mnangagwa also said his government’s efforts to formalise the sector should not be viewed as a direct threat to their livelihoods. He said:

However, there have been some worrisome trends affecting the sector, and if left unchecked, they will have dire ripple effects on our country, overshadowing the important role of this critical sector.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe echoed Mnangagwa’s warning against night vending.
He added that his ministry would take a leading role in holding local authorities accountable for mistreating vendors. He added:

The people who are night vending are creating fertile ground for drug and substance abuse activities. These same people are also facilitating the distribution of counterfeit products, which are sold at night and find their way into people’s homes, further exacerbating health concerns.

Lovemore Mudzoki, Secretary of the Tuckshops Association, said they are not involved in the demonstrations called by Geza, as these protests disrupt their activities.

The Government of Zimbabwe notes with deep concern the mobilisation efforts, through social media postings, pseudo press statements and letters by criminally-inclined individuals and groups inciting peace-loving Zimbabweans to engage in unlawful gatherings that interfere with public order.
The illegal acts being mobilised undermine the prevailing security, peace and stability. The retrogressive intents should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve. Those fronting the mobilisation should stand warned.
Their self-seeking, subversive and anti-development endeavours have been exposed. May I reiterate that we have a Constitutional mandate to safeguard the security and territorial integrity of this country and we will not apologize to fulfill that mandate.
May I take this opportunity, therefore, to assure the nation and all our visitors that the country’s security services are on high alert to ensure the sustained safety and security of the public.

May I, once again, reiterate that anyone who tries to intimidate, threaten, harass or coerce the public to engage in criminal acts will certainly face the full wrath of the law. The Commissioner General of Police will apply the law to its fullest without fear or favour.

Kazembe Addresses The Country's Security Situation [Full Statement]

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), has promoted Major General Emmanuel Matatu to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him as the new Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA).
This announcement was made by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Martin Rushwaya, in a statement issued on Thursday, 27 March 2025. Said Rushwaya:

His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Commander in Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, acting in terms of section 216(2) as read with section 89 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe and sections 11(1)(a) and 11(4) of the Defence Act (Chapter 11:02), has appointed Major General Emmanuel Matatu to the rank of Lieutenant General and Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army with immediate effect.

Lieutenant General Matatu replaces Lieutenant General (Rtd) Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, who was sworn in as the new Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture earlier on Thursday.
On Tuesday, 25 March, President Mnangagwa retired Sanyatwe from the military and named him the new Minister of Sport, taking over from Kirsty Coventry, who recently became president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Matatu, who was previously the ZNA Chief of Staff (Administration), has climbed the ranks in the military. In 2021, he was promoted from Brigadier-General to Major-General when Lieutenant General David Sigauke became the ZNA commander.
His appointment is part of a series of leadership changes within the army. Sigauke took over from the late Lieutenant General Edzai Chimonyo, who passed away in July 2021.
Chimonyo had succeeded General Philip Valerio Sibanda in 2017, when Sibanda was appointed commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF).
Sibanda replaced retired General Constantino Chiwenga, who is now the Vice-President of Zimbabwe.
Matatu is a former ZPRA veteran. He attended Thekwane High School in Plumtree and trained at the Zambian Military Academy, Kohima, during the liberation struggle.

President Mnangagwa promoted Major General Matatu to Lieutenant General and made him the new Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army. Matatu replaces Sanyatwe, who became the Minister of Sport. Matatu used to be the ZNA Chief of Staff before his promotion. There have been other leadership changes in the army before Matatu's appointment. Matatu is a former ZPRA veteran and trained at the Zambian Military Academy during the liberation struggle.

Lieutenant General Matatu Assumes Command Of The Zimbabwe National Army

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) will carry out mandatory inspections and re-inspections across the country.
In a notice released on Thursday, 27 March, ZETDC said these inspections are meant to ensure the safety and reliability of electrical systems, helping to protect the lives and property of electricity users. ZETDC said:

Recent incidents of house fires and electrical accidents underscore the critical importance of maintaining safe electrical installations.
These inspections are not just procedural, but are a vital step in preventing potentially devastating consequences.
Unsafe wiring, faulty connections, and non-compliant installations pose serious risks to electricity users and members of the public.
ZETDC is dedicated to ensuring that all electrical systems meet the highest safety standards. These inspections will identify and rectify potential hazards, minimizing the risk of electrical fires, shocks, and other dangers.
</blockquote>
To facilitate these essential safety measures, ZETDC announced that a fee of US$25 will be charged to all customers for statutory inspections and re-inspections.
For generator verification and safety inspections, the fee for generators up to 100KW (petrol, diesel, solar, wind, etc.) is US$5, while for generators above 100KW, the fee increases to US$50.
For advanced safety inspections, owners of generators below 100KW will pay US$20, while those with generators above 100KW will pay US$100. Operators of prototype generators below 100KW will also be required to pay US$100.
The power utility further advised its customers that all payments must be made through official ZETDC payment platforms, and a receipt will be provided as proof of payment. ZETDC said that no payments should be made to individuals during the inspection process. ZETDC added:

We understand that inspections may cause some inconvenience, but the safety of your family and property is paramount. We urge all customers to cooperate fully with our inspection teams.
By adhering to these statutory requirements and cooperating with ZETDC, we can collectively create a safer environment for everyone.
The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) will be closely monitoring that these inspections are done within the confines of the regulations to ensure the safety of all installations.

However, ZETDC did not specify the start and end dates for the inspections and re-inspections.

Zimbabwe's electricity company, ZETDC, will check all buildings for safety. They want to prevent fires and accidents caused by bad wiring. Customers will have to pay a fee for these inspections. The fee depends on the size of the generator. Customers must pay through official ZETDC platforms and get a receipt. ZETDC wants everyone to cooperate and follow the safety rules. The government will make sure the inspections are done properly. Dates for the inspections were not mentioned.

ZESA To Conduct Mandatory Inspections And Re-Inspections On All Premises Countrywide

Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of journalist Blessed Mhlanga, who was arrested on 24 February 2025. He is charged with “transmitting data messages that incite violence or damage to property.”
Before his arrest, Mhlanga interviewed a war veteran and former senior member of the ruling ZANU PF party, who criticized President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Said Amnesty International:

The authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Blessed Mhlanga as he is detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his human rights. Authorities must drop all the charges against him.
Blessed Mhlanga’s detention is arbitrary and in contravention of Zimbabwe’s constitutional and international obligations to respect and uphold the right of everyone to freedom of expression and press freedom.
</blockquote>
On 21 February, the Zimbabwe Republic Police announced they were looking for Mhlanga for allegedly violating Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
Mhlanga voluntarily presented himself to the police on 24 February, where he was arrested and charged with “transmitting data messages that incite violence or damage to property.”
On 25 February, the Harare Magistrate Court denied him bail, and his appeal was also rejected by the High Court. His trial is set for 4 April 2025.
Mhlanga’s detention seems connected to an interview he conducted with Blessed Geza on 27 January and 11 February, where Geza criticized President Emmerson Mnangagwa and called for his resignation due to corruption and worsening economic conditions in Zimbabwe.
This isn’t the first time Mhlanga has been targeted for his journalistic work. In May 2022, he was arrested and charged with “disorderly conduct” after recording the arrest of former opposition MP Job Sikhala.
Police allegedly assaulted him, broke his phone, and arrested him even after he identified himself as a journalist. He was later acquitted.

Amnesty International wants journalist Blessed Mhlanga to be released. He was arrested for sending messages that may cause trouble. He interviewed someone who criticized the President. Police are looking for him for breaking the law. Mhlanga gave himself up and was arrested. He was denied bail and now has to wait for a trial. This is not the first time he has been in trouble for his work. He was once arrested for recording an arrest and got hurt by the police.

Amnesty International Demands Blessed Mhlanga's Immediate And Unconditional Release

Human Rights Watch (HRW), an international non-governmental organisation dedicated to defending and promoting human rights worldwide, has called on Zimbabwean authorities to immediately release journalist Blessed Mhlanga and drop the charges against him.
Mhlanga, a senior journalist for the independent media outlet Heart and Soul TV, has been in detention since his arrest in Harare on February 24, 2025.
Mhlanga is charged with transmitting information that incites violence or causes damage to property under Section 164 of Zimbabwe’s Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
Idriss Ali Nassah, senior Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch, said on Wednesday, March 26, that the charges against Mhlanga are “baseless.” Said Nassah:

Zimbabwean authorities should immediately release the journalist Blessed Mhlanga and drop the charges against him for simply doing his job.
These baseless charges are yet another stark reminder that the rights to freedom of expression and the media are under serious threat in Zimbabwe.

The charges against Mhlanga relate to interviews he conducted in November 2024 and February 2025 with Blessed Geza, a war veteran and former ZANU PF member.
During one interview, Geza called for the resignation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, accusing him of nepotism, corruption, and incompetence.
On February 28, a magistrate court denied Mhlanga bail, arguing that his release would cause national unrest and undermine peace and security.
The High Court upheld the decision on March 21, leaving him in prolonged pretrial detention at Harare’s maximum-security Chikurubi Prison.
Zimbabwe’s Constitution, along with two international treaties to which Zimbabwe is a party—the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)—protect the right to freedom of expression.
HRW said targeting journalists and political opponents for peacefully exercising these rights undermines Zimbabwe’s standing as a rights-respecting country. Said Nassah:

The arrest and prolonged detention of Blessed Mhlanga sends a message to all journalists that their work makes them a target for mistreatment.
The Mnangagwa government should respect basic rights and stop weaponizing the law and judicial system against journalists, human rights defenders, opposition politicians, and activists.

Human Rights Watch wants Zimbabwe to release journalist Blessed Mhlanga and drop the charges against him. Mhlanga was arrested for his interviews that criticized the President. Free Blessed Mhlanga Now, Human Rights Watch Tells Mnangagwa Government

Police have urged the public to ignore individuals and groups attempting to undermine peace and security in the country, including those using social media to spread alarm and create despondency among Zimbabweans.
In a statement on Thursday, March 27, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said officers have been deployed to maintain law and order in both urban and rural areas across the country.
Nyathi called on Zimbabweans to cooperate with the deployed officers and report anyone inciting violence or disrupting the smooth flow of traffic. The statement reads:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police acknowledges the peaceful environment currently obtaining in the country and urges the public to continue undertaking social and economic activities without any disturbances.
In the same vein, the Police has deployed members to maintain law and order in both urban and rural set up in all parts of the country.
The law will definitely take its course against individuals and groups who seek to undermine peace and security in the country, including those using the social media to cause alarm and despondency among Zimbabweans.
The public should therefore cooperate with the deployed police officers and report anyone inciting violence and interference with the smooth traffic flow in the country.

The ZRP statement comes just hours after fugitive former ZANU PF Central Committee member Blessed Runesu Geza released a new video reiterating calls for mass protests to force President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign on March 31.
Geza appeared in the YouTube video on Wednesday from an undisclosed location, wearing military fatigues and urging people “from Plumtree to Mutare, from Zambezi to Limpopo” to “flood the streets.”

The police in Zimbabwe want people to ignore social media messages telling them to be violent and cause trouble. The police are working to keep the country safe and peaceful. They want people to report anyone encouraging violence or disrupting traffic. People should keep doing their normal activities without being scared. If they see something wrong, they can call the police to report it. The police are ready to take action against anyone trying to cause trouble. There is one person who is trying to start protests, but the police are working to stop that. People should stay calm and not listen to messages promoting violence.

ZRP Urge Zimbabweans To Ignore Social Media Incitement To Public Violence

ZANU PF President and First Secretary, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has warned party members who fail to adhere to the party line that they will face severe consequences.
Speaking at the 382nd Ordinary Session of the Politburo at the party’s headquarters in Harare on Wednesday, March 26, Mnangagwa said that, as with any revolution, those who do not align with the correct path must be left behind. He said:

ZANU PF is a colossal revolutionary party, we have a job to do and a Vision to deliver for the good of the people of our great motherland, Zimbabwe.
I applaud all my fellow citizens from across the country, for their clarity, national consciousness and patriotism that continue to squash efforts by malcontents and rogue delusional elements bent on disturbing our peace, unity and harmony.
Our motherland, Zimbabwe, will forever be a constitutional democratic and sovereign nation, with all of us living in unity, peace and harmony. Vanoukura, vanoramba vachiukura, nyika ichienda mberi. (Those who bark will continue doing so while the country moves forward).
… Our Party Constitution is sacred, it is like roots and the trunk of a tree, and we the members are its branches.
As with any other revolution, those who do not toe the correct line of the revolution must fall by the wayside.

The warning comes after Blessed Geza, a former ZANU PF Central Committee member, and some war veterans called for street demonstrations on March 31 to force the ZANU PF leader to resign. 
They claim Mnangagwa wants to extend his rule beyond his second term and final term, which ends in 2028, until 2030.
Geza accuses people close to Mnangagwa of stealing from the country, while most Zimbabweans continue to live in poverty.
During the ZANUPF national conference in Bulawayo last year, party members adopted “Resolution Number One” to extend President Mnangagwa’s tenure to 2030.
The rationale behind this move, as explained by Patrick Chinamasa, ZANU PF’s Secretary for Legal Affairs, is to allow Mnangagwa to complete ongoing developmental initiatives.

ZANU PF leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa, warned party members to follow the rules or face consequences. Some members want him to resign, but Mnangagwa's supporters say he is good for the country. They want him to stay until 2030 to finish important projects. Mnangagwa says those who don't follow the party's rules will be left behind. The party's constitution is important, and members must obey it. Mnangagwa wants to continue leading Zimbabwe in peace and unity.

Mnangagwa Warns ZANU PF Members Failure To Follow Party Line Will Have Consequences

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sworn in Lieutenant General (Rtd) Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe as the new Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at State House in Harare on Thursday morning, March 27, with both Vice Presidents, Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi, in attendance.
Sanyatwe replaces Kirsty Coventry, who recently became the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
On March 25, Mnangagwa retired Sanyatwe from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) and his role as Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA).
Mnangagwa, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the ZDF, has not yet appointed Sanyatwe’s successor. 
There are claims by some activists that Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, a retired Brigadier General and the Deputy Director-General of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO), could be a potential candidate.

President Mnangagwa made Lieutenant General Sanyatwe the new Minister of Sport. Sanyatwe replaced Kirsty Coventry, who now leads the International Olympic Committee. Sanyatwe was retired from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces before becoming a minister. Mnangagwa has not yet chosen a replacement for Sanyatwe's old job as ZNA Commander. Some think Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi could take over. The swearing-in ceremony happened at State House with Vice Presidents Chiwenga and Mohadi there.

Mnangagwa Swears In Sanyatwe As Minister Of Sport

The water level in Lake Kariba has begun to decline again, despite this being the time of year when it is usually expected to rise.
In an update on Monday, 24 March, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) said that while lake levels typically start to rise at this time, they are currently fluctuating due to outflows surpassing inflows. ZRA added:

On the same date last year, the lake level was slightly higher than it is today.
</blockquote>
According to ZRA, on 24 March 2025, the lake level was 476.84m, and the usable live storage volume was 5.90 BCM, while usable live storage (for power generation) was at 9.12%.
In contrast, on 24 March 2024, the lake level was 477.52m, and the usable live storage volume was 9.08 BCM, while usable live storage (for power generation) was at 14.02%.
A few weeks ago, specifically on 3 March 2025, Lake Kariba had a higher water volume compared to this week, indicating that the water level has been declining after it started picking up in January.
According to ZRA, on 3 March 2025, the lake level was 476.89m, and the usable live storage volume was 6.21 BCM, with usable live storage (for power generation) at 9.60%.
Earlier this month, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), a unit of ZESA Holdings, increased power generation at the Kariba South Hydropower Station to mitigate a severe electricity crisis following the shutdown of two generators at the Hwange Thermal Power Station.
Since March 4, Kariba has been generating a maximum of 485 MW, a significant increase from the 185 MW it had been producing over the past several months due to low water levels at Lake Kariba.
On February 28, 2025, ZESA announced that two units at the Hwange Thermal Power Station would shut down for maintenance.
Unit 7, one of the two new units commissioned in 2023 and generating 300 MW, will undergo maintenance from March 2 to March 29, 2025. Unit 6, an older unit producing 150 MW, will be shut down from mid-March to May.

Lake Kariba's water level usually rises at this time of year, but now it is unexpectedly dropping. The low levels are caused by more water flowing out of the lake than flowing in. Last year, the lake had more water than it does now. This decrease in water is affecting power generation in the area, leading to an increase in electricity production at the Kariba South Hydropower Station. They had to do this to deal with a power crisis caused by maintenance at the Hwange Thermal Power Station.

Lake Kariba’s Water Levels Drop Unexpectedly

A 27-year-old man from Harare, Tinashe Sibanda, who had been missing since March 14, has been found dead in a mortuary.
Tinashe was last seen at Rezende Parkade in Harare’s Central Business District, where he worked as a pirate taxi driver, known locally as Mushikashika.
His family started searching for him after he disappeared from his workplace. After unsuccessful efforts to find him, they were advised to check the Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary.
A close relative told <a href="https://www.heraldonline.co.zw/missing-man-found-in-mortuary-11-days-later-family-discover-he-was-killed-in-car-accident/">H-Metro</a> that Tinashe’s body was found at the mortuary, and it seemed he had been hit by a car. Said the relative:

He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and grey jeans. He was working in Waterfalls where they noticed his absence from work.
So, they checked with his brother, and that’s when they realised that he was nowhere to be found.
His phone was no longer reachable, and that’s when people started to panic and search for him.
He used to operate a mushikashika from town to the University of Zimbabwe. He was last seen at the Rezende Parkade area, where the pirate taxis to UZ operate from, and that was that.
It has since emerged that Tinashe died from head injuries after he was hit by a car along Second Street Extension.

The motorist involved in the accident reportedly stopped and contacted the police, but they were unable to identify the deceased. Said a neighbour:

He was hit by a car while crossing Second Street Extension and entering Norfolk Road.
The driver then stopped trying to call the police before three cars came and hit him, dragging him.
He died on the spot, and he couldn’t be identified due to the damage to his face.
His brother eventually visited Parirenyatwa and identified him by his phone and clothes otherwise, his face is crushed.

The driver involved in the accident visited Parirenyatwa almost daily in an attempt to meet with the deceased’s relatives.

A man named Tinashe from Harare who drove a taxi went missing on March 14. His family couldn't find him, so they looked in a mortuary and found his body. He was hit by a car while crossing the street and died. The driver who hit him tried to help by calling the police. Tinashe's family could only identify him by his clothes because his face was badly injured. The driver tried to meet with Tinashe's family to apologize.

Missing Harare Taxi Driver Found Dead In Mortuary

The Warriors came from behind for the second game in a row to claim a share of the spoils against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Zimbabwe refused to be bullied in the heat and humidity of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and proved that, under German tactician Michael Nees, they are now hard to beat.
Playing in front of 30,000 spectators at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Tuesday night, super-sub Tawanda Chirewa scored a stoppage-time equaliser for the Warriors after Zimbabwe had fallen behind with 16 minutes still to play.
The Warriors were indebted to goalkeeper Washington Arubi, who kept the team in the game during Nigeria’s 20-minute sustained attack on Zimbabwe’s goal in the first half.
With just eight minutes on the clock, Arubi dived to his right to deny Victor Osimhen from a point-blank header that was headed for his right.
Two minutes later, Arubi thwarted the striker’s shot on the turn and also stopped Samuel Chukwueze’s follow-up.
The goals came in the second half, when, first, Osimhen was left unattended and nodded home the opener from the blind side.
Then, after an on-rushing Knowledge Musona, who was unmarked, crashed his effort against the underside of the crossbar, Chirewa scored from an acute angle after a clever run into the Nigerian penalty box.
It’s the second time Zimbabwe has managed to rescue a point in five days in the same competition, having staged another massive comeback, drawing 2-2 against Benin at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last Thursday after being 2-0 down.

Resilient Warriors Hold Nigeria To A 1-1 Draw In Uyo

President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially relieved Kirsty Coventry of her duties as Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture on Tuesday, March 25.
The move follows Coventry’s election as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last week.
The 41-year-old former Olympian secured the role in a secret vote among seven candidates during the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece, on March 20. She is set to serve an eight-year term in this prestigious position.
Upon her return from Greece on Sunday, Coventry indicated that she wouldn’t immediately step down from her ministerial role, saying she would complete a proper handover with her successor in the coming weeks before formally assuming her IOC duties on June 23.
However, on Tuesday, Martin Rushwaya, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, announced in a statement that Coventry had been relieved of her Cabinet position. Said Rushwaya:

Acting in terms of section 108 (1) (a) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, His Excellency President Dr E.D Mnangagwa has relieved Honourable Kirsty Coventry from her position as Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture following her well-deserved election as the President of the International Olympic Committee.

Coventry will officially take office on Olympic Day, June 23, after the handover from President Bach. Bach will remain in his role until then, but will resign as an IOC Member following the transfer of power and will take on the title of Honorary President.
Coventry’s first major event will be overseeing the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, with less than 11 months until the Opening Ceremony.

President Mnangagwa removed Kirsty Coventry from being Minister of Sports because she was elected as the President of the International Olympic Committee. Coventry will officially start her new role on June 23. She will also be responsible for overseeing the Olympic Winter Games in 2026. Even though Coventry wanted to complete handover properly with her successor, the President decided to remove her from her Cabinet position. Her term will last for eight years in this new prestigious role.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has warned the public about a scam involving a fake article and video promoting a platform called CryptCandor. 
In a statement, the RBZ said the scam falsely claims that this investment platform offers quick profits. It even pretends to quote the Bank’s Governor to make it seem credible. The Bank has made it clear that these claims are completely false.
The central bank is urging people to be cautious and watch out for “get rich quick schemes,” as these are often traps set by criminals to steal money from unsuspecting individuals. The statement reads:

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe wishes to notify the public of a scam article and AI-generated video titled “The truth is coming out! Government admits it hid this Revolutionary Platform where 99 out of 100 investors are already earning more than $4,000! Now available to everyone!”
The article and video purport that CryptCandor is a legitimate investment platform offering quick returns and falsely quotes the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor and other individuals.
This misleading information has no basis and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe urges the public to exercise extreme caution on such “get rich quick schemes”, which are often devices used by criminals to defraud unsuspecting individuals.
The public is advised to be vigilant before taking part in any such “investments” and in particular to look out for the following red flags:
1. A financial service provider who is not registered or regulated but invites investments.
2. Investment plans that primarily operate on social media platforms with little to no physical visibility in the form of permanent offices, or
3. Promises of super profits or returns that are unrealistic to achieve through known legitimate economic and financial activities.

In essence, the RBZ is advising against trusting schemes that appear too good to be true, as they are likely scams.

RBZ Warns Public About Fake AI Video Promoting Fraudulent Investment Platform

A young man was run over by a train on Saturday morning in Rusape and died while being transported to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital in Mutare.
According to The Manica Post, the deceased, Lyvine Mapiye, reportedly had earphones plugged into his ears and, as a result, could not hear the blaring horn of the train.
Mapiye sustained severe leg injuries and was first rushed to Rusape General Hospital. Due to the severity of the injuries, he was then transferred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital but sadly died along the way.
National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) confirmed the tragic incident in a statement. It reads:

The NRZ regrets to inform the public of a tragic accident in which a young man lost his life earlier today (Saturday) after he was run over by a train in Rusape.
Due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital but, unfortunately, passed on while on the way there.
We express our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. May the Lord comfort them in this difficult moment.
Meanwhile, we urge the public to exercise extreme caution on and around railway tracks to avoid such incidents. Stay safe, stay away from railway tracks.

On Saturday, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) raised alarm over the increasing number of accidents at level crossings.
Recent incidents include two collisions between trains and vehicles, one on March 20 and another on March 21.
In a statement, the NRZ said that on March 20, a couple was injured when their car was hit by a locomotive on the Chiredzi-Triangle road.
Then, on March 21, a vehicle failed to stop at the level crossing at Amtec in Gweru and was struck by an approaching train. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

A young man named Lyvine Mapiye was hit and killed by a train in Rusape because he couldn't hear the train's horn. He had earphones in his ears. He got hurt badly and died on the way to the hospital. Young Man Dies After Being Hit By Train In Rusape

Villagers from Mkhonyeni Village in Tsholotsho District, Matabeleland North Province, are calling for March 16 to be recognised as a national public holiday to honour female victims of Gukurahundi who were killed on that date in 1983.
The villagers are also demanding that the area be turned into a museum to preserve the history of the atrocities committed by the Fifth Brigade in their village.
On March 16, 1983, 21 women and a young man were killed by the Fifth Brigade under Chief Siphoso’s leadership.
Each year, survivors and families of the victims gather to remember their loved ones, but this year, their calls for national recognition have grown stronger.
The community has decided to write to Parliament, urging lawmakers to officially declare March 16 as a Women’s Day to acknowledge women’s struggles and resilience.
The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) and other partners have recently supported the cause by donating fencing wire and a gate to enclose the burial site of the victims.
Speaking during a Gukurahundi memorial service held on March 16 in the area, one villager said:

This is a sacred place, it must be protected so that even long after we are gone, future generations will know what happened here. The government must acknowledge this day officially.

Gogo MaNxumalo, a survivor of the massacre, is among those calling for March 16 to be officially recognised at the national level. She said:

I am in great pain because of what happened here. When I speak, I feel like crying because I have lost so much…
They took them away, escorting them like cattle. When they arrived at Langeni, we would hear gunshots — those were our relatives.
When they were doing that, they didn’t care about anything. During that time, I had my newborn.

She said her husband’s younger brother, along with his wife and many others, was among those killed in the massacre.
Survivor Patricia Dlamini urged for the immediate recognition of the tragedy through the establishment of a public holiday and a museum. She said:

We are not happy about how this case is being handled by the government.
As one of the victims, my point is that this incident happened just after independence, and yet up to today, we are still in shock.
Why were women killed in such a painful manner?
On top of that, it was during Women’s Month, which is why we are requesting a public holiday.
We kindly ask for a museum to be built, a public holiday, and proper shelter for us survivors,” she said.
Right now, this is my home we are talking about—where I lost everything.
We were left with only the clothes we were wearing.
Our property was destroyed, leaving us in poverty until today. I am homeless, struggling to survive.

Dlamini said they lost livestock, including cows, donkeys, goats, and poultry, during the atrocities, which further compounded the hardships faced by the survivors.

Tsholotsho Villagers Call For Gukurahundi Public Holiday

Veteran journalist Geoffrey Nyarota, the founding editor of the independent Daily News, has passed away at the age of 74 after a long battle with colon cancer. He died on Saturday around 8 PM at the Murambi Garden Clinic in Mutare.
Nyarota was known for his work as a human rights activist and his fearless investigative reporting. He played a major role in exposing the Willowgate Scandal in the 1980s while serving as editor of the State-run Chronicle. 
The scandal, involving the illegal resale of vehicles purchased by government officials, led to the resignation of five ministers.
In 1999, Nyarota became the founding editor of Daily News, where he continued his work as an outspoken journalist. During his time at Daily News, he was arrested six times. 
On August 1, 2000, it was reported that the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) had sent a man named Bernard Masara to kill Nyarota. 
However, Masara reportedly changed his mind after meeting Nyarota and warned him of the plot, which was later verified by the paper’s editors.
In 2003, Nyarota and his family fled Zimbabwe, first moving to South Africa and later to the United States.
 He was awarded a fellowship at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University and also taught journalism at Bard College.
In December 2024, a fundraising initiative was launched by friends to assist with Nyarota’s ongoing cancer treatment.
Born in 1951, Nyarota began his career as a teacher before joining The Rhodesian Herald as a trainee in 1978. He became editor of The Chronicle in 1983.
Nyarota is survived by his wife, Ursula, and their three children: Tafirenyika, Itayi, and Rufaro.

Police have reportedly instructed street-side tyre vendors in Harare to move their stock from makeshift stalls ahead of planned demonstrations on March 31, 2025.
According to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/street-tyre-traders-ordered-to-remove-stockpiles-fearing-they-could-be-burnt-to-barricade-roads-during-planned-march-31-protests/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>, state security agencies, including the police and Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO), are on high alert ahead of the protests.
Tyre vendors in Kambuzuma claimed that they had been directed to relocate their tyres by the police.
This follows reports that bars in Chitungwiza have also been asked to close earlier than usual for similar precautionary measures. Said a vendor:

We have been told to move most of our tyres from stalls and keep them away from them by the police.
They are now doing rounds raiding anyone who has not taken the tyres off their stalls as March 31 approaches. The fear, as told by one of the officers, is that protestors will take and burn them.

Tyres are commonly used to block roads during protests, as seen in previous demonstrations such as those on August 1, 2018, and January 2019.
In Zengeza 2, Chitungwiza, some bar employees reported being instructed to close between 8 pm and 9 pm, with one operator referring to it as an “illegal curfew.”
The looming protests have been called for by some war veterans led by Blessed “Bombshell” Geza. They are demanding President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s resignation.

Police in Harare are telling street-side tyre vendors to move their tyres before March 31 to prevent protestors from using them to block roads. The police are worried about planned demonstrations, so they want the tyres out of sight. Bars in Chitungwiza are also closing early as a precaution. Tyres have been used in past protests to block roads. Some war veterans are calling for the president's resignation, leading to these upcoming protests. Police are taking measures to prevent any disruptions during this time.

Tyre Vendors Ordered To Remove Stockpiles Before 31 March | Report

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has raised alarm over the increasing number of accidents at level crossings.

In February this year, a kombi was involved in a collision with a train at the Mahatshula level crossing in Bulawayo.
Despite the train sounding its horn, the driver failed to stop and sped past two vehicles that had already stopped to give way.
 As a result of the collision, three schoolchildren were injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Two Vehicles Hit By Trains At Level Crossings

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) is investigating an incident in Hwange where three villagers suffered electric shock after touching fallen ZESA power lines.
One of the victims, a 17-year-old boy, died from his injuries at the United Bulawayo Hospitals while receiving treatment. The other two victims are still in the hospital.
ZERA CEO Edington Mazambani told Southern Eye that the initial report from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company suggested the incident was not fatal. Said Mazambani:

The authority then met with the mother of the now-deceased at United Bulawayo Hospitals while the victim was still being treated.
The authority will be travelling to Hwange this week for the investigation.
The authority is conducting public awareness campaigns in rural communities to educate members of the public to desist from getting into contact with fallen electric conductors and poles.
We are also engaging the utility to ensure that it carries out routine maintenance on its infrastructure.

Villagers reported that the power lines had been lying on the ground for over three years, and the situation had been brought to the attention of the authorities several times, but nothing had been done to address the issue.
Ward 12 Nakabandana councillor Jowan Chuma placed the blame for the teenager’s death squarely on the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company and accused the power utility of negligence.

ZERA is looking into an accident in Hwange where 3 people got shocked by ZESA power lines. One of them, a 17-year-old boy, passed away. The other 2 are still in the hospital. ZERA is checking the situation and advising people to stay away from fallen power lines. The villagers had complained about the lines being on the ground for years but nothing was done. A councilor blamed the power company for the boy's death. ZERA will investigate the incident further and is working to make sure power lines are safe.

ZERA Probes Electrocution Incident In Hwange

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has said the current exchange rate stability, where the official and parallel market rates are nearly the same, is not artificial and will continue in the future.
This follows concerns from some members of the public and businesses about a shortage of the ZiG, which they believe is affecting the economy.
Some critics argue that this shortage is causing “artificial inflation,” which could rise if more local currency enters the market.
In February, Zimbabwe’s inflation rate was 0.5%, well below the 5% limit set by the government.
In an exclusive interview with The Herald, Ncube asserted that the country’s low inflation rate is “not artificial.” He said:

Inflation is what it is. But also the accusation is that there’s no money in the market. That is what is called a tight monetary policy; that is actually the technical definition.
So, right now, we have a policy that is tight in order to manage inflation in the first place. That is the objective; so it’s not artificial.
The level of inflation is commensurate with the ZIG money supply that is at hand, and it is appropriate that the Reserve Bank is conducting such a tight monetary policy.
That monetary policy is complemented, also, by a tight fiscal policy because what you don’t want is for Government spending to run away, getting out of control to a point where we have to monetise that excess budget deficit.
</blockquote>
Ncube said that a strict fiscal and monetary policy work together, and people should be pleased that the exchange rate and inflation are stable. He said:
<blockquote>
That is what we have right now and that is why the ZiG is stable in the first place. The economy and citizens have been crying out for a stable macroeconomic environment and that is what we are delivering right now.
 So people should be pleased that at least, we are delivering what is expected of us as economic policymakers.
They demanded stability; it allows them to plan, it gives our domestic currency, ZIG, value. You can now save in it, you can transact in it, you restore value characteristics.

ZiG Stability, Low Inflation Rate Not Artificial, Says Mthuli Ncube

The National Competitiveness Commission (NCC) has said the Intermediated Money Transfer Tax (IMTT) is undermining business competitiveness and pushing the economy towards greater informalisation.
In its latest report analysing the IMTT’s impact, the NCC noted that while the tax initially helped boost state revenue, it continues to create price distortions, hinder financial inclusion, and stifle economic growth.
The NCC’s recent submission contributes to the growing consensus among economic stakeholders that the levy on electronic transactions should be abolished. Said the NCC:

High IMTT on digital transactions discourages the use of plastic money and boosts the holding of currency outside of bank.
This practice will undermine the financial intermediation role of banks, thus local industry failing to access concessionary funding, which is critical for enhancement of national competitiveness.
</blockquote>
The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) and the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) have also raised concerns about the impact of IMTT on business.
The IMTT was introduced in 2018 but has been adjusted several times to balance revenue generation with economic dynamics and stakeholder feedback. 
Currently, the IMTT rate is 2% for transactions in local currency and 1% for transactions in US dollars. A flat fee of US$10,150 applies to transactions of US$500,000 or more, while transactions up to US$10 are exempt.
NCC said the IMTT has led to a cascading tax burden, increasing the cost of doing business. This has made Zimbabwean goods and services less competitive in both local and international markets.
The tax is also driving economic activity toward cash-based transactions, particularly in the informal sector, where goods are sold at lower prices to avoid the levy. This shift reduces the use of formal financial services and affects the effectiveness of monetary policy.
Comparisons with other countries in the region show that Zimbabwe’s 2% rate for local currency transactions is higher than rates in Tanzania (0.5%), the DRC (1%), Cameroon (0.2%), and Uganda (0.5%).
The report recommends that the government reduce the IMTT rate to align with regional standards, allow it as a deductible expense, and provide exemptions for essential transactions.
