Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, Kirsty Coventry, has confirmed that she will relinquish her ministerial post following her recent election as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The 41-year-old was elected in a secret vote among seven candidates during the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece, on March 20. She will serve an eight-year term.
Coventry made history by becoming the IOC’s first female and first African president in its 130-year history.
Addressing the media upon her arrival from Greece on Sunday, Coventry, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, said that there is time for a smooth handover with her successor, as she will formally take office at the IOC on June 23. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200039968/coventry-cherishes-cabinet-assignment">She said</a>:

The remaining votes were cast for Frenchman David Lappartient, Jordan’s Prince Feisal, Swedish-born Johan Eliasch, and Japan’s Morinari Watanabe.
Speaking to her fellow IOC members at the luxurious seaside resort in Greece’s southwestern Peloponnese, Coventry said:

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has reinstated its Director-General, Eltah Nengomasha, following a disciplinary hearing by an Independent Tribunal that cleared her of any misconduct.
Nengomasha was suspended in October 2024, with the SRC withholding the reasons behind the decision.
In a statement released on Wednesday, March 12, SRC Board Chairman Gerald Mlotshwa announced that Nengomasha will resume her duties, including overseeing the restructuring of the SRC’s human resources, with the full confidence and support of the Board. The statement reads:

Please take note that following the suspension of the Director General of the SRC on the 31st of October 2024, a disciplinary hearing was subsequently held before an Independent Tribunal. 
In its twenty-one page determination of 11th March, 2025, the three member Tribunal acquitted and cleared the Director General of any wrongdoing.
Effectively, the suspension against the Director General is lifted and she will resume normal duties, including the restructuring of the SRC’s human resources, with the full confidence and support of the Board.

The Sports and Recreation Commission has rehired Eltah Nengomasha as Director-General after a hearing found her not guilty of any wrongdoing. She was suspended in October 2024, but now she is back on the job. The SRC Board Chairman announced this decision and said she will help with restructuring the human resources. Elliot Mujaji, Zimbabwe’s iconic Paralympic gold medalist, has warned about the crippling impact of churches and other non-sporting activities taking over critical sports facilities across the country.
Mujaji, the celebrated champion of the 100-metre race at the 2000 and 2004 Paralympic Games, expressed grave concern over the alarming trend of local authorities allocating space meant for sports and recreation to churches, with some facilities even being converted into maize fields. He said:

If there is anything that saddens me most is to see sporting space taken over by churches and maize fields. We have been left with nothing for sports development.
Surely, in most high-density suburbs in the country, one or two churches occupy where there were once vibrant sporting activities.
Even the few that have been left are not being maintained. The authorities do not even care anymore.
Mujaji made the world sit up and take notice after winning the 100 metre sprint at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and went on to defend his title in Athens four years later.

Mujaji secured a gold medal just days after swimming sensation Kirsty Coventry had etched her name in the history books with a stunning haul at the Athens Olympics.
Mujaji’s Paralympic victory in the 100-metre sprint came hot on the heels of Coventry’s own heroics, where she claimed a gold, silver, and bronze medal at the 2004 Games in the Greek capital.
Coventry would go on to cement her legacy as the greatest Olympian to ever emerge from the African continent, clinching four medals – including another gold – at the 2008 Beijing Games.

However, the legendary Paralympian’s efforts to expand his reach and impact have been hampered by a persistent challenge – a lack of adequate funding.
Mujaji says he has been invited to share his athletic expertise and coach young athletes in Gokwe, Sanyati, and Zhombe. However, he has struggled to find the necessary funding to carry out these training programmes.

Republicans say this order makes sports fairer, but LGBT and human rights organisations say it is discriminatory.
The order, effective immediately, mainly affects high schools, universities, and local sports.
Some sports organisations like swimming, athletics, and golf have already banned transgender women from competing in female categories if they went through male puberty.
Trump said this order would also apply to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and that transgender athletes would not be allowed to compete. He plans to deny visas to transgender athletes trying to enter the US for the LA Games.
Trump said the order ends the “war on women’s sports” and that his administration would not allow “men” to compete against female athletes.
The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), the governing body for college sports in the US, also banned transgender women from competing in women’s sports.
This change happened right after Trump signed the executive order. The NCAA used to allow transgender women to compete if they met certain testosterone limits.

Zimbabwe Cricket Offers Free Entry For Fans In Tests Against Afghanistan

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) suspended director-general Eltah Nengomasha last week, pending a disciplinary hearing.
The reasons behind Nengomasha’s suspension have not been disclosed.
SRC board chairperson Gerald Mlotshwa confirmed the development in a brief statement.
According to the SRC, Sebastian Garikai will take on the duties of Acting Director-General, a role he had previously fulfilled before Nengomasha’s appointment. Reads the statement:

Zimbabwe have named two uncapped players in their squad for a sub-regional qualifying contest in Kenya this month as they begin their quest for a place at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The newcomers are all-rounder Tashinga Musekiwa and right-arm fast bowler Tinotenda Maposa, with 11 of the players who featured against India in July being retained.
Aiming to rebuild under new head coach Justin Sammons, Zimbabwe are going to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier B with a young squad with an average age of 26 and a total of 509 T20I appearances.
Captain Sikandar Raza, at 38 and with 91 matches under his belt, is the team’s most experienced player, followed by the returning all-rounder Ryan Burl, who at 30 has featured in 77 games.
The other seasoned campaigners in the side are all-rounder Wessly Madhevere and pace bowlers Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava, aged 24, 28 and 26 and with 65, 56 and 55 T20I appearances respectively.
Apart from Burl, recalled after regaining his form, Zimbabwe also welcome the return of right-arm seamer Trevor Gwandu, who had not made the cut since his international bow against Ireland in December last year.
Zimbabwe’s Convener of Selectors, David Mutendera, is confident the young side will deliver results at the six-team ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier B, the other participants being the Gambia, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda and the Seychelles.

SuperSport Secures Broadcast Rights For 2024/25 CAF Interclub Competitions

Zimbabwean champion boxer Charles Manyuchi has decided to move his boxing academy and promotion entity to Zambia, citing astronomical fees that local promoters are having to pay.
In an exclusive interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/manyuchi-relocates-to-zambia/">Zimpapers Sports</a> on Thursday, Manyuchi said that the high fees gazetted by the Zimbabwean government make it difficult to recoup investments from events.
He said the boxing environment in Zimbabwe is not conducive due to these excessive fees, and that it is virtually impossible to make a financial return on hosting boxing tournaments. Said Manyuchi:

The boxing environment in Zimbabwe is not conducive due to the gazetted fees that are way too high to sustain promotions.
There is nothing we can do about it because they have been set and ratified by a higher authority which is the Ministry of Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation.
When, as a promoter, one looks at the benefit they would have derived from hosting a boxing tournament, there is virtually none because, at the end of it all, there is no financial reward to talk about. It’s as good as doing charity work.
So given the current state of things, I do not anticipate putting up any tournaments in Zimbabwe in the foreseeable future because it is expensive to do so.

According to The Herald, Manyuchi has acquired an academy licence, promoter and manager licences, as well as licences for his boxers from Zimbabwe and two Zambians who have recently joined his stable.
The Zambian duo includes Simon Ngoma and Alice Mbewe, previously with Exodus Boxing.
According to receipts from the Zambia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board, Manyuchi paid a total of K1 200, equivalent to US$46, for these licences.
Hosting a boxing event in Zambia requires a US$30 payment, a US$25 ring rental, and US$40 for each referee and judge. Boxers, however, do not have to pay any levy on their earnings.
In contrast, Zimbabwean regulations impose a US$250 promoter licence fee, US$275 for an international tournament sanction, around US$300 for ring rental, and US$80-$100 for referees and judges.
In addition, the Zimbabwean boxing control board deducts 10% of a boxer’s earnings from each match.

He says it's hard to make money from boxing events in Zimbabwe because of these fees. Manyuchi has got licences for his academy and boxers in Zambia, and it's cheaper to host events there. In Zambia, he only paid $46 for licences, while in Zimbabwe, fees are much higher. Manyuchi feels he won't be hosting boxing events in Zimbabwe anytime soon because of the high costs.

"Excessive Fees" Force Charles Manyuchi To Relocate To Zambia

Zimbabwean long-distance runner Rutendo Nyahora could not complete the women’s marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Sunday morning.
Nyahora, who was making her second Olympic appearance after receiving a universality slot from World Athletics, dropped out of the 42km race after completing 22 kilometres.
She was one of six runners who failed to finish the event, including American star Fiona O’Keefe, who withdrew before the 5km mark.
Commenting on her performance, the 35-year-old South African-based athlete said it simply was not her day, as she had stopped twice in the first 20km before deciding to withdraw from the race. She said (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/nyahora-finds-going-tough/">The Herald</a>):

Nothing happened. It was not my day today, I don’t want to lie, it was not my day today. I tried but it was not my day.

She said she would take a break to rest before she decided on her next move.
Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won the women’s marathon in an Olympic record time of 2 hours 22 minutes and 55 seconds.
Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa finished second in 2:22:58, while Kenya’s Hellen Obiri clocked 2:23:10 to claim the bronze medal.
This was Nyahora’s second Olympic appearance, having previously represented Zimbabwe at the Rio 2016 Games, where she finished 92nd out of 157 athletes.
The women’s marathon was the final event for Team Zimbabwe at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which concluded on Sunday.
In addition to Nyahora, Zimbabwe had six other athletes competing at the Games. Sprinters Tapiwanashe Makarawu and Makanakaishe Charamba both reached the final of the men’s 200m event.
The two marathon runners were Nyahora and Isaac Mpofu, who finished 19th in the men’s marathon on Saturday.

Rutendo Nyahora, a Zimbabwean runner, couldn't finish the marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She stopped after running 22 kilometers. She said it wasn't her day and she needed to rest. The race was won by Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands. Nyahora had also competed in the Rio 2016 Olympics. This was the last event for Team Zimbabwe at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Besides Nyahora, six other athletes from Zimbabwe took part in different events like sprinting, swimming, and rowing.

Rutendo Nyahora Fails To Finish Race At Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Zimbabwean sprinters Tapiwanashe Makarawu and Makanakaishe Charambafinished sixth and eighth respectively in the men’s 200m final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games held at the Stade de France on Thursday night.
Running side by side in lanes two and three, Makarawu crossed the finish line in 20.10 seconds, while Charamba finished in 20.53 seconds.
The gold medal was won by Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, who set a blistering pace of 19.46 seconds.
USA’s Kenneth Bednarek claimed silver with a time of 19.62 seconds, and compatriot Noah Lyles had to settle for bronze in 19.70 seconds.
Lyles, who had been crowned the world’s fastest man just days earlier in a thrilling 100m final, was hampered by a positive COVID-19 test before the 200m event and had to be assisted off the track in a wheelchair.
The double gold had eluded Lyles, as he sought to emulate the achievements of Usain Bolt in 2016.
For Makarawu and Charamba, this was their Olympic debut, and the first time Zimbabwe had two sprinters reach the final of the 200m at the Olympic Games.
Makarawu, a silver medallist at the Africa Senior Championships held in Cameroon, told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/charamba-makarawu-go-down-fighting-historic-sprint-duo-in-brave-fight/">The Herald</a> that he enjoyed competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He said:

It was a good experience. The finals today, it was enjoyable. It was the most relaxed race I have ever run in my life.
I wish I could get another lane between those fast guys but it is what it is. But I did my best coming sixth in the world.

Makarawu is also hopeful of next year’s World Championships after he qualified for the global meet when running 20.07 seconds in the first-round heats on Monday. He said:

It means a lot to me and it means that we are going somewhere as Zimbabwe, as (well as) me and my coach, I am just three places from the podium finish.
So, from today onwards I know what I need to work on and we will see how it goes from today until next year’s Tokyo World Championships.

Charamba, who finished last in the race competing at the Olympics was a dream come true. He said:

It’s my debut and I can’t complain of anything but I want to say it up from here.
To be honest I was scared. This is my first time racing these guys and these are big names.
But since the race is done now, and I have the experience, I will just carry it going forward, now I know what to do and what not to do going forward in the next championship.
So (I will) just get back to the drawing board, rest a bit then get into off-season training in a few months.
It’s a dream come true that I have made it to the Olympics, and everybody was counting me out like nobody thought I was going to make the final.
So now making the finals is a great feeling and finishing in the top eight in the world is great.
Nobody can take that away from me and I am just grateful for the journey and I am looking to a great career.
This championship was a learning curve for me.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean distance runners Isaac Mpofu and Rutendo Nyahora will showcase their endurance at the 2024 Olympic Games, with Mpofu competing in the men’s marathon on Saturday and Nyahora taking on the women’s marathon event on Sunday.

Zimbabwe’s sprinters at the 2024 Paris Olympics Tapiwanashe Makarawu and Makanakaishe Charamba have progressed to the 200m finals.
Charamba finished 3rd in the semi-finals Heat Two with 20.31 seconds and Makarawu also finished in 3rd position in Heat Three with 20.16 seconds.
The two sprinters are following in the footsteps of Brain Dzingai, who reached the final at the 2008 Olympics.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/charamba-makarawu-sprint-into-olympic-final/">The Herald</a>, Charamba, who is the son of the Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet (Presidential Communications), George Charamba, said:

The aim of coming here was just to enjoy myself like I said (before) I am not setting expectations for myself, I am just going to try to go there and have fun.
So, I went out there, had fun, and ended up making the final Tapiwa and me.
We can now call ourselves the history makers because, at the end of the day, people never expected two Zimbabweans to be in the final.
It’s a great feeling because the last time Zimbabwe, if I am not mistaken, had a person who was an Olympic finalist in athletics it was Brian Dzingai who is my mentor also.
So, I listen to him. So, by listening to him I managed to make the Olympic final and it’s just a great feeling for me, him, and Tapiwa.

The heat was won by Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo in 19.96 seconds, with United States favourite Noah Lyles coming second in 20.08s. Added Charamba:

I will probably say it was very pivotal because it was him (Dzingai) and coach Ken (Harnden), he is my coach right now in Auburn. He is a Zimbabwean.
They all played a big role and brought me into the system. I trusted the system and I am now an Olympic finalist.

Makarawu had another good performance, though he finished behind USA’s Erriyon Knighton who won the race in 20.09s and Joseph Fahnbulleh who was second in 20.12s. Said Makarawu:

It was impressive for sure, I started feeling tired after 150m. But I think it was okay… I am still impressed that I made it to the finals. It has been my target since last year. So, I am glad today I made that dream come true.
Whatever is going to happen in the final I don’t mind because I have attained the goals that I set for myself for this year. So, I am happy for myself and I thank God for that.
It is such an honour and we thank God for that because it’s history that we made, me and Makanaka and we thank God for that because without God we couldn’t have made the finals but with Him everything is possible and we have made history.
And we are going to do our best tomorrow? We will see how it goes.

Charamba, Makarawu Advance To The Olympics 200m Finals

Zimbabwe won their first Rugby Africa Men’s Cup in 12 years on Sunday as they beat Algeria 29-3 in the final at the multi-purpose Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, Kampala, Uganda.
Following the victory, Zimbabwe is now 28th in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings – their highest position since they were 26th in November 2015.

Algeria had reached their first final on the back of impressive wins over Ivory Coast and Kenya, while the Sables were chasing their second title having last won the competition in 2012.
Zimbabwe rose to the challenge and were deserved winners on the day, scoring four tries without conceding any in reply.
Right wing Trevor Gurwe set the Sables on their way with a couple of first-half tries but it wasn’t until late in the match that the Zimbabweans could relax, with tries from replacement front-row Liam Larkan and openside Godfrey Muzanargwo sealing the deal in the last seven minutes.
Zimbabwe captain Hilton Mudariki said:

Zimbabwe Win Rugby Africa Men's Cup 2024

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has finalised the appointment of a new coaching staff for the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Team.
In a statement issued on July 4, 2024, ZC announced that the coaching appointments are in line with the recommendations made by the Mhishi Committee of Inquiry.
The committee was established to investigate and provide recommendations following the team’s failure to qualify for the recently concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. It said:

Following the announcement last month of Justin Sammons as Head Coach and Dion Ebrahim as Batting Coach, the rest of the technical personnel have now been confirmed.
Former South Africa international cricketer Charl Langeveldt has been named as Bowling Coach, with his compatriots Ravish Gobind and Curtly Diesel coming in as Strategic Performance Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coach respectively.
All the appointments were made in consultation with Sammons, who also opted to retain Stuart Matsikenyeri, although he now assumes the role of Fielding Coach, while Amato Machikicho will continue serving as the team’s Physiotherapist.

Zimbabwe Cricket Finalises Appointment Of Coaching Staff For Senior Men’s National Team

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) on Wednesday, 19 June announced it had appointed South African Justin Sammons as Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National team.
Sammons was part of the Proteas technical team as a batting consultant between 2021 and 2023.
In a statement, ZC said Sammons will be joined by former Zimbabwe international Dion Ebrahim who is coming in as Assistant Coach.
Ebrahim represented Zimbabwe in 29 tests and 82 ODIs between 2001 and 2005 and has been a part of the coaching staff with the New Zealand senior men’s team.
Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said:

Justin Sammons Named Zimbabwe Senior Men’s Cricket National Team Coach

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) athlete Themba Gorimbo is building a solar-powered library at his Muvuti Village in Bikita District, Masvingo Province, with free 24-hour internet access for research.
Gorimbo, who was recently granted permission by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) to wear the national flag during his competitive matches, took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that construction of the library has started. He wrote:

Phase one of my village library project here in Zimbabwe is complete. Foundation done and first brick work has started.
This library is accessible to anyone and everyone who wishes to study and be something in life. Going to help all young kids who live in the village to study at night because it is solar-powered and has 24-hour access to anyone and everyone who wishes to study and be something in life. This project will help provide free internet access too to the villagers.

According to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/gorimbo-builds-library-in-home-village/">Chronicle</a>, Gorimbo’s journey to becoming a professional fighter was difficult after he lost both his parents before reaching the age of 15 years.
Gorimbo’s mother passed away when he was just nine years old, and his father passed away four years later, leaving him orphaned.
For some time, he was involved in the dangerous world of illegal diamond mining in Marange, trying to make ends meet.
Late last month, Gorimbo (33), claimed his third UFC victory in a match against American opponent Ramiz Brahimaj in a welterweight combat.
He made headlines last year after being gifted a house in Miami, United States of America, by actor and wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, following his first career Octagon win at UFC Vegas 73.

Themba Gorimbo Builds Library With Free Internet In His Home Village

Harare West MP Joanah Mamombe (CCC) expressed concern about Zimbabwe Cricket’s plans to construct a 10,000-seater multi-purpose sports stadium in Victoria Falls for the 2027 International Cricket Council World Cup.
Speaking in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Mamombe highlighted that building a stadium in Victoria Falls could harm the city’s biodiversity and jeopardize its UNESCO World Heritage status.
She recommended that authorities consider alternative locations for the new stadium, preserving Victoria Falls’ natural state as a premier tourist destination.
Below is Mamombe’s presentation and the National Assembly Speaker, Jacob Mudenda’s response:

HON. MAMOMBE: Thank you very much. Hon. Speaker Sir. Zimbabwe, in 2013, enacted a new Constitution which entrenched Environmental Rights in Section 73, ‘every person has the right to have the environment that is protected for the benefit of the present and future generations through reasonable legislative and other measures that prevent pollution, promote conservation and secure ecologically sustainable development and use of natural resources.
Now, Hon. Speaker Sir, on Tuesday, Cabinet approved a proposed plan to construct a multi-purpose stadium in Victoria Falls. Hon. Speaker, Victoria Falls is renowned for its natural environment and wildlife.
Our tourism industry is heavily reliant on nature-based attractions. Zimbabwe is the third largest country in terms of wildlife resources, that is, rhinos, elephants and so forth. Why do we recognise the importance of infrastructure development Hon. Speaker?
It has the potential to attract more tourists. We cannot achieve this without disrupting our biodiversity. Many other cities in Zimbabwe could host the stadium that has been proposed thereby distributing the economic benefits without sacrificing the environmental integrity.
If tourists Hon. Speaker, can travel from South Africa to come and visit Victoria Falls, I am sure they can do the same to travel from other cities to go and visit Victoria Falls.
UNESCO heritage status is also at risk as we note that Victoria Falls was previously facing serious risks of losing the UNESCO World Heritage due to the developments that threaten its natural state.
Hon. Speaker, instead, we should explore alternative locations that do not compromise our valuable natural resources and conservation efforts.
I, therefore, pray that the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality together with the Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture bring a Ministerial Statement to elaborate on this plan to this august House. Ngatisarasai chiri mumawoko nekuda kuwombera Hon. Speaker Sir. I thank you. – [HON. MEMBERS: Hear, hear.] –
THE HON. SPEAKER: Your concern Hon. Member, in terms of protection of the environment, is noted. However, there is a master plan that is going to take care of that eventuality and also, if you may recall, the Environmental Impact Assessment will be made before any such infrastructural development takes place.
I hope that the concern you are raising will indeed be given due respect. Do not forget that Victoria Falls, in terms of its master plan, has accommodated the flora and fauna of Hwange National Park which is adjacent to the boundary of the city.
So, I think your concerns will be taken care of and it may not be necessary to ask for a Ministerial Statement.

MP Joanah Mamombe Pleads Against Stadium Construction In Victoria Falls

The construction of a multi-purpose sports stadium is set to commence soon in Victoria Falls and the facility is expected to be completed in August next year ahead of the 2027 International Cricket Council World Cup.
The tournament will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia.
The stadium will also host some sports codes such as football, rugby, tennis, hockey and squash.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to lay the foundation stone to mark the commencement of construction of the stadium.
Speaking at the post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday in Harare, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere said the construction of the facility will create training and employment opportunities for the local communities. He said (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/world-cup-stadium-for-zim/">The Herald</a>):

Zimbabwe Cricket was allocated 10 hectares of land for the construction of an international cricket stadium and ancillary facilities in the Masuwe Special Economic Zone for Tourism in Victoria Falls.
The project will contribute towards the US$5 billion tourism and hospitality industry by 2025, as well as the development and expansion of sports infrastructure in the country.
Tourism is a key pillar of the Zimbabwean economy and ranks at number three after mining and agriculture, accounting for 12 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product during the period January to September 2023.
The construction of the cricket facilities and associated infrastructure will also create training and employment opportunities for communities in Victoria Falls.

Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Babra Rwodzi said the stadium will be constructed by ZC (Zimbabwe Cricket) who will own the facility for the next 25 years. Said Rwodzi:

The stadium will be completed next year, 2025, in August to allow the work on the grass, which has to be done a year before the World Cup, to take place.
The other sports disciplines that will be conducted in the same stadium will be rugby, tennis, hockey, and squash. They are still looking at other disciplines that can come on board.
There is another ground (B-Arena) to be constructed in the same place for the practice sessions of the teams that will be competing at the World Cup.
Zimbabwe Cricket is funding the construction. Zimbabwe Cricket is leasing the ground on a 25-year agreement with the Government and they will be constructing using their own money.

Zimbabwe Cricket To Construct 10 000 Seater Stadium In Victoria Falls

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner-General, Tandabantu Godwin Matanga, has intervened in a dispute between the Zimbabwe National Handball Federation (ZNHF) and the Officer Commanding Harare Province, Commissioner Wonder Tembo.
It appears the dispute between the two parties arose after Police in Harare demanded payment to escort foreign teams participating in the ongoing Zone IV International Handball Federation Trophy Tournament in Chitungwiza.
In a statement, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Police do not charge any money or costs to escort foreign teams coming to participate in sporting events in the country. He said:

Reference is made to the ongoing Zone IV International Handball Federation Trophy Tournament and the engagement by the organizers with the Officer Commanding Harare Province, Commissioner Wonder Tembo on the 07th May 2024 for escort services to foreign participating teams to the venue in Chitungwiza.
The Commissioner-General of Police, Tandabantu Godwin Matanga, has directed that escort services be immediately provided to the teams for free.
In this regard, no money will be paid to the Zimbabwe Republic Police or any individual member for the escort services.
The Commissioner-General of Police has made it clear that the Zimbabwe Republic Police does not charge any money or costs to escort foreign teams coming to participate in sporting events in the country.
Any inconveniences caused by the misunderstanding between the National Handball Federation and the Officer Commanding Harare Province are sincerely regretted.

ZRP Commissioner-General Orders Police Not To Charge Escort Fees For Foreign Teams At Handball Tournament

SRC Allows Themba Gorimbo To Wear Zim National Colours In UFC Competitions

Themba Gorimbo has criticised the Minister of Sport, Arts, Recreation and Culture Kirsty Coventry, again, stating that he no longer looks up to her.
Gorimbo, who is Zimbabwe’s only Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) athlete recently described Coventry as the worst Sports Minister ever and blames her for the poor state of sports in the country.
Speaking to broadcaster Owen Madondo in an interview aired Monday, Gorimbo clicked his tongue upon mention of Coventry’s name. He said:

I do not look up to her. I used to sing praises for Kirsty Coventry but now, you know what, I do not even want to talk about it.

Gorimbo has previously attacked the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) after it barred him from brandishing the national flag or wearing it during his competitive matches.
He has since resolved the matter after meeting SRC Director General Eltah Nengomasha.
According to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/themba-gorimbo-blasts-sports-minister-kirsty-coventry-again-days-after-settling-matter-with-src/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>, Gorimbo is in Zimbabwe visiting family and friends while overseeing the construction of a state-of-the-art library in his home village in Bikita District, Masvingo Province.
Gorimbo has been a revelation since making his UFC debut in 2022 and recently knocked out American fighter Pete Rodriguez in 32 seconds.
He had been based in South Africa before moving to America where a meeting with legendary World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) fighter The Rock made him a household name.

Themba Gorimbo Slams Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry, Again

Zimbabwe’s Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star Themba Gorimbo says sport is dying in Zimbabwe because Kirsty Coventry, the Sports, Arts and Recreation Minister, is out of her depth.
In a post on his X page on Tuesday, 13 February, Gorimbo described the former Olympic gold medalist as “the wort Sports Minister”. He wrote:

I stand by my country and love every single development happening in my country. The roads are beautiful, things are changing but only one thing.
Sports is dying because we have the worst sports minister who let her family run the department and her husband run her meetings.

An X user, Zanda Toto suggested that Kirsty may have struggled because the Government underfunds sport. He wrote:

In another post, Gorimbo slammed the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), saying it has refused to allow him to have the Zimbabwean flag on his kit. He wrote:

Coventry has faced lots of criticism since she was appointed Sports Minister in 2018 by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Under her watch, Zimbabwe has endured some difficult periods including the banning of the country’s stadiums by CAF as well as the suspension of national football teams and clubs from international football competitions.
Surprisingly, Mnangagwa retained Coventry in his cabinet after the 2023 general elections.
Mnangagwa defended the move, saying that he as the appointing authority was the one to decide on the fitness for office.

Gorimbo Says Kirsty Coventry Is The Worst Sports Minister Ever

In a devastating incident, Kelvin Kiptum, the world marathon record holder, lost his life in a road accident outside Eldoret in western Kenya on Sunday. The 24-year-old athlete was driving the vehicle, along with his 36-year-old coach, Gervais Hakizimana from Rwanda, who also perished in the accident. The crash occurred on the Eldoret-Kaptagat road.
Citing a police statement, CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo said Kiptum died on the spot while a third occupant survived with serious injuries.
Kiptum had recently achieved fame for his outstanding performance in the Chicago Marathon last year. His marathon time of 2 hours, 35 seconds broke the previous record held by renowned marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge. World Athletics had recently ratified Kiptum’s record-setting time. At the young age of 24, he had already reached the pinnacle of his career.

Zimbabwe Cricket Has Suspended Wessly Madhevere And Brandon Mavuta Over Use Of Banned Recreational Drugs

Dave Houghton has resigned as the Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Cricket Team. He will remain with the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) Board in a different role, <a href="https://zimcricket.org/news/2626/ZC-accepts-Houghton%E2%80%99s-resignation-as-Zimbabwe-Head-Coach">Zim Cricket</a> reported. Houghton submitted his resignation letter before the board meeting, where they were going to discuss Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Houghton felt that after 18 months in charge, he had “lost the changeroom” and believed a new voice was needed to lead the team. The resignation came after Zimbabwe’s loss in a limited-overs series against Ireland. He said in a statement:

I have always had Zimbabwe cricket at heart and, though my coaching of the national team comes to an end, I would love to be involved in other areas.

With Houghton’s departure, an interim technical team will be appointed to oversee Zimbabwe’s upcoming tour to Sri Lanka in January. The ZC Board also formed a three-member committee to investigate the team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup and to review the cricket affairs structure of the organization. The committee, whose other members are Mr Godfrey Nyadongo and Mr Blessing Ngondo, has been given three weeks to complete its tasks.
