Dave Houghton has resigned as the Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Cricket Team. He will remain with the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) Board in a different role, <a href="https://zimcricket.org/news/2626/ZC-accepts-Houghton%E2%80%99s-resignation-as-Zimbabwe-Head-Coach">Zim Cricket</a> reported. Houghton submitted his resignation letter before the board meeting, where they were going to discuss Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Houghton felt that after 18 months in charge, he had “lost the changeroom” and believed a new voice was needed to lead the team. The resignation came after Zimbabwe’s loss in a limited-overs series against Ireland. He said in a statement:

I have always had Zimbabwe cricket at heart and, though my coaching of the national team comes to an end, I would love to be involved in other areas.

With Houghton’s departure, an interim technical team will be appointed to oversee Zimbabwe’s upcoming tour to Sri Lanka in January. The ZC Board also formed a three-member committee to investigate the team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup and to review the cricket affairs structure of the organization. ZIFA Could Be In Trouble For Not Attending The Commissioning Of Magaya's Heart Stadium

Expressing his disappointment, Coltart, who is also a member of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party, highlighted the detrimental influence of successive administrations dominated by ZANU PF politicians on the country’s cricket. He laid blame on these administrations for undermining the sport’s development and progress. He said:

The chess team from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cheziya_Gokwe_High_School/">Cheziya Gokwe High School</a> in Gokwe, Zimbabwe, won first place in the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship held in Rome, Italy.
The team made up of Ishmael Kaitano, Gamuchirai Gogoma, Ezywell Mutema and seasoned coach Blessing Jenami, represented Zimbabwe in the competition from November 13 to November 25, 2023. All the players are day scholars from Gokwe, with the girl hailing from Chipere village.
They defeated competitors from Europe and the rest of the world. 
Their success showcases the potential and talent that can emerge from Gokwe, challenging the belief that the town is backward. 
Cheziya Gokwe High was crowned Crystal Candy Schools Chess League Champions back in September to get the ticket to represent the country.

Italy: Cheziya High School From Gokwe, Zimbabwe Wins World Youth Chess Championship

Former Black Stars striker, Raphael Dwamena, died during a football match between Egnatia Rrogozhinë and Partizani Tirana. The Ghanaian player collapsed on the pitch in the 23rd minute after suffering a heart seizure, according to Italian reporter Gianluca Di Marzio. Despite the efforts of the team doctors, they were unable to save his life.
Dwamena had been playing with an implanted defibrillator since 2020, when he experienced a heart seizure for the first time. In November 2021, he suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for BW Linz during a game against TSV Hartberg. Due to his heart complications, he was released by the club in 2022 and subsequently joined Albanian side KF Egnatia in January.
Throughout his professional career spanning nine years, Dwamena played for nine clubs, including well-known teams like Levante, Real Zaragoza, Red Bull Salzburg, and FC Zurich. His international career with the Black Stars was unfortunately cut short by his heart issues. Dwamena made his debut for the national team in 2017, playing a total of nine games and scoring two goals.
Implanted defibrillators are not new and have been used by other players in the past. For example, Daley Blind, who plays for Ajax and the Dutch national team, had an implanted defibrillator fitted in 2019. This was because he was diagnosed with a heart condition called myocarditis. The defibrillator helps monitor his heart rhythm and can provide a shock if needed. Despite his diagnosis, Blind continued to play professional football.
Another player with an implanted defibrillator is Christian Eriksen, who currently plays for Manchester United. In 2022, Eriksen became the first Premier League player known to have an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) fitted.
However, some players have had to retire from football due to heart issues. Sergio Aguero, while playing for Barcelona, experienced chest discomfort during a match against Alaves in October. After medical evaluation, he was diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia, which is an irregular heartbeat. As a result, Aguero made the decision to retire from professional football earlier than expected.

English Premier League: Luton Town Hold Liverpool

Construction of the first phase of the Heart Stadium in Harare’s Waterfalls which is being built by PHD Ministries and Yadah Football Club owner Walter Magaya has finished.
However, the official opening has been postponed due to the unavailability of important officials. Regional leaders who were invited to attend are away at a summit in Angola, and internet connectivity issues forced them to meet in person instead of virtually, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200019051/magayas-heart-stadium-phase-one-complete">NewsDay</a> reported citing Magaya.
Foreign dignitaries, ambassadors, and government officials are also expected to attend the event. The Heart Stadium is part of a larger sports centre being built by PHD Ministries and Yadah Football Club owner Walter Magaya. Magaya hopes that President Emerson Mnangagwa will commission the facility. He said:

My dream still stands, I want the head of the State to officially open this facility if his schedule permits. We await his guidance,” Magaya said. “Other heads of State, former presidents and high-ranking officials who want to be part of this official opening had to postpone because of the Sadc conference. The turf has been laid successfully over a modern drainage system, and the grass looks lush. The stadium features international standard dugouts, which is a first in the country. Final touches are being done to the dressing rooms, corporate boxes, doping control, and administration rooms, and grandstands with bucket seats have been erected.

The stadium will initially accommodate 5,000 spectators but will be expanded to a 40,000-seater venue when fully completed. PHD Ministries Completes 1st Phase Of Constructing Heart Stadium In Waterfalls

Furthermore, she believes that funding for capital expenditure and office equipment should be prioritised to ensure effective service delivery.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2021/10/18/caf-to-ban-nss-after-warriors-final-2022-wcq/">condemned and banned all stadiums in Zimbabwe</a> from hosting international matches. This decision was made because the stadiums did not meet CAF’s requirements. CAF stated that the stadiums need to have bucket seats made of a strong and fire-resistant material. The owners of the stadiums are also required to set up a Venue Operations Centre (VOC) that provides a clear view of the stadiums and has CCTV monitors. The VOC should have the ability to make emergency announcements through the public address system. CAF also stated that the stadiums should have modern electronic turnstiles and automated systems.

Minister Coventry Appeals To Treasury For Funding To Develop Sporting Infrastructure

Innocent Benza, the Member of Parliament for Mutasa Central, has raised concerns about the government’s timeline for installing bucket seats at the National Sports Stadium. Benza expressed the desire of football fans for Zimbabwe to host matches at the National Sports Stadium and questioned why it would take until December for the installation of bucket seats to be completed. The stadium’s condition has also worsened due to its continuous use by Premier Soccer League teams, including Benza’s own club, Herentals Football Club. Benza said:

South Africa's Springboks Face New Zealand's All Blacks In The Rugby World Cup Final

Former Zimbabwe netball player Pauline Jani, who represented both the national team Gems and the Black Mambas, has died at the age of 34.
Jani had been battling a long illness and was recently admitted to the hospital, <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/new-ntball-star-jani-dies">The Sunday Mail</a> reported.
She gained recognition for her impressive performance at the 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup that was held in Liverpool, United Kingdom.
Mourners have gathered at the Highfield new police camp in Harare to pay their respects. Jani, who was also a constable in the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), was highly regarded in the netball community. ZRP Mambas head coach Talent Museka confirmed the death adding that her death is a significant loss. He said:

It is sad that we have lost Pauline. This is a loss not only to us as ZRP Mambas but the entire netball fraternity.

Even after retiring from international netball, she remained involved in the local netball scene and received several awards for her contributions. In 2021, she was honoured with the golden hand accolade for the RANL Dry Season Tournament, and she continued to shine in the subsequent netball seasons, earning the Rainbow Netball Amateur League golden hand medals in 2021 and 2022.

Former Gems Shooter Pauline Jani Has Died

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani has hailed the late Heath Streak as a true legend who touched the lives of many people.
Paying his respects, Mukuhlani described Streak as “a true great” of the game of cricket. He said:

Zimbabwe Cricket Mourn Heath Streak

Opposition parties have paid tribute to the late legendary former Zimbabwe cricket team captain Heath Streak who succumbed to liver and colon cancer on Sunday, 03 September.
Streak, Zimbabwe’s all-time leading wicket-taker, died at the age of 49.
In a statement, the opposition CCC party described the late Streak as a legend who represented his country with honour and distinction. CCC said:

We stand together with the nation in grieving the loss of a legendary cricketer, Heath Streak. He was 49. He represented our country with great honor and distinction throughout his career.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife and family during this difficult time. May his soul find eternal peace.

CCC, ZAPU Mourn Heath Streak, Zimbabwe Cricket Legend

Former Zimbabwean cricketer and cricket coach Heath Streak has died.
Streak’s death was announced by his wife, Nadine Streak, in a post on Facebook. She wrote:

In the early hours of this morning, Sunday the 3rd of September 2023, the greatest love of my life and the father of my beautiful children, was carried to be with the Angels from his home where he wished to spend his last days surrounded by his family and closest loved ones. He was covered in love and peace and did not walk off the Park alone. Our souls are joined for eternity Streaky. Till I hold you again 💔

In May this year, Sean Williams, a current Zimbabwe cricketer and a close friend of Streak told <a href="https://www.sacricketmag.com/former-zimbabwe-captain-battling-cancer/">Cricbuzz</a> that the latter was battling colon and liver cancer. He was quoted as saying:

Heath has colon and liver cancer (Stage 4). All I know at this stage is Heath’s immediate family was called to go to him in South Africa and I am not sure of any details thereof.
I did message Heath and he did respond but I’m sure at this stage the family will want privacy.
It sounds like the cancer is spreading pretty quickly cause last week he was fishing.
Heath is my mentor and did a lot of good things for a lot of people and basically saved my life and career. We just pray he will be OK.

In a statement in May, Streak’s family said the former cricketer was undergoing treatment in South Africa and asked for privacy. The statement said:

The Stanbic Bank-sponsored Stragglers Junior Cricket Week roars into life this morning as the financial services institution plays its part in grassroots cricket development.
Stragglers Chairlady, Win Ives said Stanbic’s contribution is imperative to the success of Stragglers Junior Cricket Week.  She said:

She said this cricket week has been running for over 60 years and applauded Stanbic Bank for being involved for almost half of that period.
During the weeklong event, the budding cricketers from different socio-economic backgrounds rub shoulders in a well-planned cricket experience with youngsters coming from areas as far as Bindura, Shamva and Bulawayo to play limited-overs cricket.
The grade 4 and 5 cricketers play in the morning and the grade 6 and 7s in the afternoon. The players are placed into teams named after cricketing countries – Zimbabwe, West Indies, India, England, Australia, and Sri Lanka to name a few.
Each Country challenges a different country every day during the week in limited overs matches. All cricketers are rotated and every player has a chance to bat and bowl. Certificates are awarded to high-achieving cricketers.
Ives said while this successful model remains, it is fine-tuned every year to ensure its smooth running. She said:

Every year we have budding cricketers who are successful in their school cricketing careers and endeavour to go further after school.
While we do not keep track of all of them, it is always exciting to see some familiar names in the senior school age groups and at national level.

She said Stragglers exposes the development sides to all levels of talent and gives them the opportunity to play the game with sides they would not normally play against.
Ives said Stragglers Junior Cricket Week was designed to share the passion and the love of the cricket game adding that this is achieved annually as the young cricketers leave the week wanting to play more and having established firm friendships around the game. Said Ives:

Zimbabwean cricket legend Heath Streak has broken his silence following social media rumours on Wednesday that he had died.
The 49-year-old former cricketer said he was “very upset and hurt” after one of his former teammates Henry Olonga announced he had died.
Streak told Indian outlet <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/i-am-alive-and-well-says-heath-streak-23305140">Mid-Day</a> that he was alive and well and that he was upset over the rumours. He was quoted as saying:

It is a total rumour and a lie. I’m alive and well… I am very upset to learn that something as big as someone apparently passing can be spread unverified, especially in our day and age of social media.
</blockquote>
Earlier on Wednesday, Olonga had taken to social media to pay tribute to Streak. He tweeted:

Arsenal defeated Manchester City in a penalty shootout on Sunday to lift the Football Association’s Community Shield at Wembley Stadium. The Gunners beat City 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation. 
The Football Association’s Community Shield traditionally inaugurates the new Premier League season. Typically, this game features the winners of the previous season’s Premier League and FA Cup. Johnson posted a video on Instagram, stating that he was moved and motivated by Gorimbo’s story. Gorimbo had won his first UFC fight with only $7 in his bank account. After the fight, he sold his fight gear online and made $7,000, which he used to build a <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">bush pump</a> to provide clean water to his village back in Zimbabwe.
Gorimbo went to America with limited funds and slept on a couch in the gym due to a lack of resources and training space. This win followed their 71-36 thrashing of Sri Lanka in their second match of the preliminaries stage two. Despite finishing at the bottom of their pool matches, the Gems are now grouped with Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Barbados in Pool E to contest for the bottom four positions.
A win in their upcoming game against Barbados would secure the 13th position for the Gems, while a loss would place them in the 14th position.
Team captain Felisitus Kwangwa expressed satisfaction with the team’s efforts, emphasising the need to maintain the winning performance to secure a perfect finish. She said:

Zimbabwe's Gems Secure Chance For 13th Place Finish With Win Against Singapore

Zimbabwe’s national netball team, the Gems, lost 86-30 to Australia in their opening match of the Netball World Cup underway in South Africa.
The tournament features 16 teams divided into four pools, with the top three from each pool progressing to the second stage. See pools below:

<li>Pool B: England, Malawi, Scotland and Barbados</li>
<li>Pool C: Jamaica, South Africa, Wales and Sri Lanka</li>

There are three stages – two group stages, followed by a knockout and placing phase. The tournament features a round-robin format in the first stage, with each team playing three games. The top three teams from Pool A and B move forward to form Pool F, while the top three teams in Pool C and D form Pool G. The bottom team from each pool is effectively eliminated from the main competition, but moves into Group E to contest 13th to 16th place.
The second stage (Monday, July 31 – Thursday, August 3) sees the top two teams from Pool F and Pool G compete in a knockout phase to determine the winner. Once all the matches have been played, the top two teams in Pool F and Pool G qualify for the semi-finals. The remaining teams can no longer win the World Cup, but move on to final classification matches.
During the third stage of the tournament, matches are played to a result as there can be no draws. The semi-finals feature a crossover between Pool F and Pool G, with the winners progressing to the gold and silver medal match and the losers competing for bronze. Teams finishing third or fourth in Group F or G compete for fifth to eighth place, while the top two teams in Group E play a final classification match for 13th and 14th place, and the bottom two teams play for 15th and 16th place.
The Gems’ loss to Australia in their opening match is a setback, but the team will have further opportunities to progress to the knockout stage. The tournament promises to be exciting, with some of the world’s best netball teams competing for the title.
At the previous Netball World Cup in Liverpool in 2019, the Gems finished in eighth place. Australia is currently ranked number 1 while Zimbabwe is number 13.

After the fight, he sold his fight gear online and made $7,000, which he used to build a <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">bush pump</a> to provide clean water to his village back in Zimbabwe. Johnson had offered to assist Gorimbo after learning of his financial struggles, and he flew to Miami to meet with him and offer his support.

I’ve been broke. I came to America seven weeks ago without money. I only had enough money to fly, get to the airport to the gym, stayed at the gym, and then a friend sent me $200.
It’s been a roller coaster. I didn’t have money, if you look at my bank account there’s $7 right now. In my bank account, there’s $7, and I have to enjoy this. I don’t know how much I’m getting paid. All I’ve been focused on for this fight was to get the win. The win was the most important thing, the money is the byproduct of getting the win.

Gorimbo said he lacked a team and training space for his fight, so he resorted to sleeping on a couch in Miami’s MMA Masters gym. Despite financial struggles, he received support from his training partners, including Colby Covington, who may become the next challenger for the UFC welterweight title. Gorimbo praised Covington as a great man and expressed his commitment to continuing with his current team.
After the revelation, the Rock last month described the situation as “crazy” adding that it brought back many emotions and memories. He added:

DStv's SuperSport To Broadcast 2023 Netball World Cup

Journalist <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Stanley_Gama">Stanley Gama</a>, who is a former editor of the Daily News, says SRC chairperson <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Gerald_Mlotshwa">Gerald Mlotshwa</a> and some board members are to blame for the suspension of Zimbabwe from international football by FIFA over a year ago.
Zimbabwe was suspended by FIFA in February last year for third-party interference, after the SRC suspended the ZIFA executive, led by Felton Kamambo, for a number of allegations, among them, failure to account for public funds and sexual harassment of female referees.
On Monday, 10 July, FIFA lifted the suspension on Zimbabwe and appointed a normalisation committee.
Gama said Mlotshwa failed to learn from his past mistake when SRC was forced to reinstate the Zimbabwe Cricket Board after the country was banned by the International Cricket Council. <a href="https://twitter.com/gama_stanley/status/1678593919808860162?s=20">Said Gama</a>:

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) led by [President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s] son-in-law Gerald Mlotshwa and the likes of [Karen Mutasa], wife to businessman Shingi Mutasa is to blame for Zimbabwe’s long isolation from football because of their shambolic and unwise decision to suspend the ZIFA Board.
Admittedly, the Felton Kamambo board was the worst in living memory, but for SRC to take the foolish decision to suspend them was obviously going to attract serious action from FIFA who don’t take kindly to political interference in football. SRC is a government arm…
The truth is the SRC is made up of politically connected and well-up people who follow elitist sports like polo and who do not understand football at all.
They don’t understand the pain of a township boy/girl missing out on international football. Mlotshwa does not learn.
He suspended the Zimbabwe Cricket Board and the ICC suspended Zimbabwe. They were only reinstated after the SRC lifted the suspension.

The SRC suspended the ZC board in June 2019 over allegations of electoral malpractices and financial misappropriation in a move that was deemed as “government interference” by the ICC.
On 24 July, ICC wrote to SRC directing them to “unconditionally” reinstate the ousted board or risk termination of their membership.
The SRC reversed its decision after two Zimbabwean senior sides at the T20 World Cup qualifiers had already been replaced by Namibia and Nigeria.
