itel Launches S24 Smartphone In Zimbabwe: A Comparison With A70 And S23

Global satellite internet provider, Starlink, has applied to operate in Zimbabwe, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has confirmed.
Earlier this month, the government of Zimbabwe instructed Starlink to shut down services as it had not been licenced to operate in the country.
Users of the service subsequently received an email from the satellite internet service provider, advising them it had been directed to disable services.
Speaking during a question and answer session on Tuesday at a business function organised by the Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICTs), Postal and Courier Services on the sidelines of the ongoing 64th edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF), POTRAZ director-general Gift Machengete said (<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/starlink-applies-for-zim-licence/">via The Herald</a>):

He admitted that POTRAZ had instructed Starlink to switch off users in Zimbabwe saying they were breaking the law. Said Machengete:

So, in short, we have not banned them. What we have just done is that those who have been using Starlink terminals were asked to have Starlink switch them off because we cannot allow illegality.
I think they have been switched off and maybe there is some outcry. But, you see those were illegal and they will be regularised when they are licenced.
Let me explain that at POTRAZ we are the licencing authority for telecommunications and we actually have a licencing framework and that framework is a converged framework whereby we check if the technology that you bring is not relevant, it is technology neutral and to reinforce that we already had geostationary satellites.
We already have geostationary satellites licenced so there is no way we would then be blocking Starlink because we are technology-neutral.

To use Starlink, Zimbabweans were mostly buying the kits from unofficial importers of the kits who brought them in from countries where the service is sold legally (like Mozambique, Zambia, Eswatini etc..).
Depending on the seller, the prices would range from about $600 to $1500. Installing the kit is generally easy and to operate it in Zimbabwe, they set their account to a roaming service.
The price of unlimited internet from Starlink with the roaming is about US $38, which customers would pay to the company directly.
Ultimately, the service was popular in Zimbabwe because the price of an unlimited internet package by the country’s internet providers is at least US$140.
That and the fact that Starlink can work anywhere in the country – even the remotest pockets of the country where people there’s no infrastructure for other types of connectivity.
An estimated 5,000 Starlink terminals are believed to have been brought into Zimbabwe by the time POTRAZ blocked the service in the country.

Starlink is shutting down its services in Zimbabwe. According to the Techzim report, Starlink has about an estimated 5,000 users of the service in the country. 
In February, the telecoms regulator in Zimbabwe POTRAZ, said that while Starlink had expressed interest in getting a license to  operate in Zimbabwe, it <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/02/26/potraz-says-starlink-has-not-applied-for-operating-licence/">had actually not applied for one</a>. Users of the service were therefore essentially breaking the law.
Last month, reports suggested that government was holding <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/03/13/zimbabwe-engages-starlink-internet-service-provider-report/">meetings with officials from Starlink over licensing of the service in Zimbabwe</a>.
Pindula spoke to one user familiar with the situation who commented on how such a shut down works:

Zimbabwean users are not the first to receive such a notice from Starlink. Reports last month suggest users in DRC also had their Starlink terminals shut down in similar circumstances.

Your @X account has a disproportionately wide reach with 169 million followers, you are an opinion maker and as such, you should use such power responsibly. 
Twitter was a space where serious issues across the spectrum were discussed, and where family members regardless of age would be comfortable to navigate around in the comfort of our homes, and pornography was not widespread as it is now. 
But now many people are worried to open @X in the presence of people they respect because a pornographic picture or video can pop up. There is also a disproportionate unsolicited pornographic material on many people’s timelines.
 Please can you address this new but sad reality, please make the platform enjoyable again as it once was. 
There are sites meant for pornography, and those that partake in that sad habit of watching pornography know where to find them. 
This is a genuine concern about the rampant explicit content on @X which I hope you will seriously look into and deal with. 
I know that you talk a lot about free speech, but surely pornography can’t be part of that free speech, this is now abusive to @X account holders who are here for decent engagement. Please return the platform to a more family-friendly environment it used to be.

Toneo Rutsito, the founder of TechnomagTv, has criticised Zimbabwean government officials for suggesting that the southern African nation might decide to choose China’s G60 satellite over SpaceX’s Starlink, owned by Elon Musk. Rutsito described the idea as foolish and embarrassing, urging the government to reconsider.

Rutsito argued that SpaceX’s Starlink has a proven track record, having been tested and used successfully over the years. In contrast, the Chinese G60 satellite is still in the trial phase. He expressed concerns about China’s reputation for spying on its citizens and claimed that allowing China to provide internet services in Zimbabwe would be a violation of human rights, including the right to privacy. He said:

The G60 Starlink project started in 2016, with the Shanghai government announcing its cluster plans in 2021. As of July, the local government said they would send nearly 1,300 satellites into orbit during the initial phase of the project. This figure is far off to date! This is a drop in Ocean against what Starlink has done in terms of geo space coverage and connectivity and to think Zimbabwe Gvt must trust and sign up a struggling and poorly connected aerospace player coz its Chinese is not only ignorant but stupid!

In comparison, Rutsito lauded SpaceX’s Starlink project, which started launching satellites in 2019. He mentioned that the project currently has over 5,289 small satellites in low Earth orbit, with plans to deploy up to 42,000 satellites in the future. Rutsito argued that Starlink’s extensive coverage and connectivity make it a more reliable choice for Zimbabwe.
Rutsito questioned the national security concerns cited by proponents of the Chinese G60 satellite, arguing that only authoritarian regimes fear open connectivity platforms like Starlink. He pointed out that eight African countries have already adopted Starlink without facing any national security issues.

itel P55, P55+, and P55 5G Now Available in Zimbabwe. Starting at $119

The Zimbabwean government is looking at different internet service providers, not just SpaceX’s Starlink. They are also considering other internet service providers such as China’s G60 Starlink to potentially operate in the country. There have been increasing calls, particularly in 2023, for Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, and the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) to authorise Starlink’s operations in the country. Supporters of this move argue that internet service providers in Zimbabwe offer expensive packages with poor internet speeds.
The government has responded by stating that Starlink <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/02/07/elon-musk-hasnt-approached-us-for-licencing-spacex-project-starlink-potraz/">had not formally applied for authorisation to operate in Zimbabwe.</a> Later, Information Minister Jenfan Muswere said <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/09/19/zimbabwe-received-starlinks-satellite-internet-service-license-application-minister-muswere/">Starlink had applied for authorisation</a> but no more update was given. Meanwhile, neighbouring countries like Zambia have already authorized Starlink, leading some Zimbabweans to create accounts in those neighbouring countries to access Starlink services.
Amid these calls for Starlink’s authorisation, George Charamba, the Presidential Spokesperson, has mentioned that Starlink is not the only contender being considered. When responding to a similar request regarding the authorisation of Starlink, Charamba stated that decisions have already been made regarding services like Starlink. In a post seen by Pindula News, Charamba added:

He added that the alleged failures of Econet shouldn’t be the basis of Zimbabwe’s public policy on data, just as the weaknesses of its competitors shouldn’t be either. Charamba said public policy is determined by considerations of “sovereignty, state security, and the breaking of monopolies and oligopolies” in providing public services. Zimbabwe and China have ties dating back to the colonial era when the Asian country trained the former’s freedom fighters.
Charamba added that while it’s true that affordable data is important for the economy, it doesn’t mean it’s directly tied to any one company, even if they claim to be promoting liberalisation of the data market.
China is developing its <a href="https://www.eurasiantimes.com/china-counters-starlink-with-starlink-accelerates-plans-for-2nd-satellite-mega-constellation/#:~:text=Guo%20Wang%2C%20with%20its%20staggering,China's%20response%20to%20SpaceX's%20Starlink.">own satellite mega constellation called G60 Starlink to compete with Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink</a>. G60 Starlink aims to have over 12,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, similar to China’s National Network project, which consists of approximately 13,000 satellites. Construction of the National Network is currently underway, overseen by the state-owned company Guo Wang.
In December 2023, <a href="https://spacenews.com/first-satellite-for-chinese-g60-megaconstellation-rolls-off-assembly-line/">the first satellite for G60 Starlink was produced in Shanghai.</a> The plan is to launch 108 satellites in 2024 out of a total of 12,000. The project is managed by Shanghai Gesi Aerospace Technology, and funding has been raised through the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai government investment vehicles.
The G60 Starlink project envisions 36 polar orbital planes, each with 36 satellites, providing broadband access services globally. China is investing in this project to rival SpaceX’s Starlink, which has already deployed thousands of satellites and acquired millions of active customers.
China’s interest in developing its satellite mega-constellations is driven by concerns about potential surveillance from foreign companies like SpaceX and the desire to have strategic advantages in outer space.

Itel P55 range full specs

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/market/itel-power-55-p55-128gb-8gb-22-2023122714513826305/">itel P55</a> has launched in Zimbabwe. The phone was launched at an event in Harare attended by brand’s officials, itel distributors, and dealers in Zimbabwe.
This is the latest phone in the <a href="https://itel.co.zw/">itel</a> P Series feature major upgrades to the memory, camera, charging and general design of the phone. For the first time, an itel phone will have 5G network version.
The phone has been available in Zimbabwe since 27 December 2023.

Advocate Jacob Mudenda, the Speaker of the National Assembly, has suggested that the Zimbabwean Parliament should create a committee called “the Committee of the Future” to provide guidance on the positive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He questions how long Strive Masiyiwa, the founder of Econet, will continue this subsidy. Murapata suggests that if Econet faces challenges, it could end up like Telecel.

Telecel Zimbabwe, a mobile network provider in Zimbabwe, has been facing a lot of problems recently. The company has had a hard time with money and has lost customers to other companies. People are not happy with the quality of Telecel’s network and services. There have also been legal issues and arguments about who owns the company. These problems have made it difficult for Telecel to do well and compete with other mobile network providers in Zimbabwe. 
He speaks as the nation is panicking after mobile network providers doubled data tariffs. The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Postal_and_Telecommunications_Regulatory_Authority_of_Zimbabwe/">Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ)</a> gave approval for telecommunications companies in the country to double their tariffs in the local currency (ZWL). However, the tariffs in US dollars remain the same. Economic factors such as currency stability, electricity prices, and fuel costs have fluctuated significantly, leading to the need for a review of the local currency tariffs for telecommunications companies, <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/potraz-grants-telecoms-companies-two-fold-zim-dollar-tariff-increase/">the Chronicle</a> cited industry experts. The move by POTRAZ is meant to support the struggling telecommunications sector. This is the third increase this year due to the local currency losing value against the US dollar, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/business/article/200018605/potraz-doubles-voice-data-tariffs">NewsDay</a>‘s Belinda Chiroodza reported. The latest adjustment was made because the currency depreciated by 444% since April. Telecommunications providers raised prices to ensure their services remain valuable. According to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gift_Machengete/">Gift Machengete</a>, the Director-General of Potraz, the tariff changes were determined based on the Telecommunications Price Index. He stated:

There are some people who believe that Econet, the company founded by Strive Masiyiwa, is trying to block competition in Zimbabwe in order to make more money. They say that if other international companies like MTN were in Zimbabwe, they would have left because of the difficult operating conditions. Many international investors and brands have already left the country, including Telecel’s international partner.
Ranga Makwata says if a company like Starlink comes to Zimbabwe, they would leave because of the low tariffs and government price controls. Econet recently had a rights issue to pay off its debts, even though they have invested a lot of money in the country without getting a return. Others said it’s sad that Zimbabweans have a choice between public and private hospitals for life and death matters, but private healthcare can set their own prices while the ICT sector cannot.

Tinashe Murapata: Are We Going To Be Happy When Econet Becomes Another Telecel?

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Postal_and_Telecommunications_Regulatory_Authority_of_Zimbabwe/">Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ)</a> has prohibited mobile service providers from hiking their tariffs in United States dollars (US$). The regulator recently <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/10/27/potraz-allows-telecoms-companies-to-double-tariffs-in-zimbabwe-dollar/">approved new tariff thresholds in the local currency</a> due to the depreciation of the Zim dollar, but stated that the US dollar remained stable.
Any service providers who violate this directive will be fined, said POTRAZ director-general Gift Machengete in a statement. Read the statement in part:

Dr Machengete announced that service packages priced in United States dollars (US$) would not be adjusted because the foreign currency has remained relatively stable. Machengete warned that any service providers who increase their US$ prices would be charging unapproved tariffs and could face fines.
The recent tariff hike sparked complaints from Zimbabweans who found the data charges unaffordable. However, Machengete claimed that Zimbabwe has the cheapest data tariffs in the region. He refuted reports that Zimbabwe has the most expensive data tariff in the world, stating that the country actually has the lowest data tariff in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. We reiterate that this is not only false, but misleading and malicious. As a matter of fact, and contrary to that report, Zimbabwe has the lowest data tariff in the Sadc region, with an out-of-bundle tariff of ZWL$14 930, which translates to US$3,21 per GB at the September 2023 official exchange rate, while the Sadc average is US$4,60.

POTRAZ Prohibits USD Tariff Hike, Adds That Zimbabwe Has The Lowest Data Tariff In SADC

Zimbabwe’s Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tatenda_Mavetera/">Tatenda Mavetera</a>, has said the ministry is working in conjunction with the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Postal_and_Telecommunications_Regulatory_Authority_of_Zimbabwe/">Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ)</a> to address the recent increase in data charges.
Companies doubled their tariffs recently after <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/10/27/potraz-allows-telecoms-companies-to-double-tariffs-in-zimbabwe-dollar/">POTRAZ gave approval for telecommunications companies</a> in the country to double their tariffs in the local currency (ZWL) creating a public outroar. However, the tariffs in US dollars remain the same.
Economic factors such as currency stability, electricity prices, and fuel costs have fluctuated significantly, leading to the need for a review of the local currency tariffs for telecommunications companies industry experts said. The move by POTRAZ is meant to support the struggling telecommunications sector.
This is the third increase this year due to the local currency losing value against the US dollar. The latest adjustment was made because the currency depreciated by 444% since April. Telecommunications providers raised prices to ensure their services remain valuable.

Voice tariffs have doubled to US$0.40 per minute, and data tariffs now stand at US$0.63 per megabyte. However, these rates still fall below the regional average. 
These tariff adjustments may help providers, but they pose challenges for consumers who earn salaries in the local currency. High internet charges have long been a concern, raising the need for pricing limits to protect economically disadvantaged individuals. The sector’s dominance by monopolies and weak regulatory oversight contribute to the problem.
