COSAFA President, Philip Chiyangwa who is the former ZIFA president is facing corruption charges after he allegedly instructed the bankrupt local football administration association to fund his birthday party.
The Independent reports that when ZIFA settled an over US$100 000 bill, the association had a debt exceeding US$6 million, a figure which had grown to over US$8 million when Chiyangwa left the organisation in December 2018, ZIFA’s debt had.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi denied reports that police are handling some cases involving the Zanu PF member of parliament for Zvimba South. He, however, confirmed that there are ZIFA cases. He said:
<blockquote>What I can confirm is that there are several cases regarding Zifa which are under investigation. Certain cases require expert evidence. We request the parties to follow the due process of the law.</blockquote>
ZIFA has been struggling to meet its financial obligations with some suggesting that the leadership was misusing funds.
The association’s bankruptcy was greatly disposed when it failed to pay the Warriors their bonuses at this year’s AFCON finals held in Egypt resulting in players threatening to boycott some matches.

Chiyangwa Facing Corruption Charges After Using Over US$100K ZIFA Money To Fund His Birthday Bash

Warriors’ goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze expressed his surprise after he was called back for national duty for a game against low ranking Somalia earlier this month. Recalling what happened in Egypt, Chipezeze was surprised to note that he was the country’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Speaking to The Sunday Mail Sports, Elvis poured his heart out:
<blockquote>Being called for national duty after what had happened in our last game surprised me. But, what suprised me more was being taken as the Warriors’ first choice goalkeeper. The technical department, led by Joey Antipas, revealed that to me. I had a chat with Joey Antipas and Lloyd Chitembwe and they told me that they believed in my capabilities and I was going to be the first choice goalkeeper for Zimbabwe in the two matches. Considering what had happened in my last game, the decision came as a surprise to me. I was a bit hesitant at first but, after some deep thinking, I decided to take the opportunity and enjoy the games
It was my debut Afcon and to be honest, I learnt a lot from that tournament. lt helped me to understand what football is all about and the effect it has on a number of people. You have a few minutes before the game, in front of such a big crowd. You are not even ready yet, then boom, you are told that you are now starting. I had to be brave, psyche myself up and prepare in a short space of time
Playing at Afcon helped me to grow as a player. At times when you are watching some of these things on TV you might not be able to comprehend it. But, when you experience it, you get to appreciate what happens. But then again, these things happen in football. There are good and bad days in football, every player goes through such phases
After Afcon, I had a long meeting with Baroka chairman Khurishi Mphahlele. He called in coach Wedson Nyirenda, his assistants and the goalkeepers’ coach.
They said they had faith in me and the club was going to do everything in its power to help me recover from that disastrous outing. That is when they decided to rope in a psychologist. At the same time, my teammates in the national team, together with other footballers, were by my side. I think this helped me to quickly recover from the debacle.</blockquote>

Chipezeze reportedly had to go under therapy after his club hired a psychologist to help the “troubled” goalkeeper.

Algeria received US$4.5 million in prize money for winning the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations while losing finalists Senegal pocketed US$2.5 million from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The losing semi-finalists, Tunisia and Nigeria each received US$2.0 million.

Angola and Kenya (Third place in group-stages): $620.000
Round of 16: $670.000 (Benin, Uganda, Egypt, Mali, Guinea, DR Congo, Cameroon and Ghana)

AFCON Prize Money Revealed

Caf’s chairman of Referees’ Commission, Souleyman Waberi has shed light on why a South African referee is no longer taking charge of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Algeria tonight.
CAF initially announced through its Twitter page on Wednesday that South African referee Victor Gomes had been appointed to officiate the game.
However, the Association revealed the following day that Cameroonian referee Alioum Alioum will officiate the match.
Speaking to BBC sport, Waberi claimed that the mixup was a mistake by CAF’s media team. He said:
<blockquote>The Caf Referees Commission did not make any appointment of the referee for today’s final until after the third-place match.
The moment I saw it, I went to see Anthony Baffoe and asked him who gave the communications department the right to make such an announcement?
He was also surprised about it. We then had to order that those announcements be taken off all Caf’s social media.
This type of mistake should never happen. But the announcement of Gomes never came from the Caf Referees Commission.
We must improve our communication as an organisation. What happened is not acceptable and people have the right to criticise us for this.</blockquote>

CAF Says Its Media Team Announced The Wrong Referee For AFCON Final

Zimbabwean Football Striker Knowledge Musona recently ended the 2019 AFCON qualifying campaigning with five goals just behind Odion Ighalo (Nigeria) who had seven goals and Fiston Abdul Fazzak(Burundi) with six goals.
He surpassed The African Footballer of the year Muhammed Salah who ended with four goals.
In terms of Football, Musona has delivered many goals for his country and he is the first warriors’ striker to score a hattrick, in comparison to Peter Ndlovu.
Peter Ndlovhu didn’t score at the National Cup finals in 2006 and if Musona scores two goals in Egypt at the National Cup he will match the record set by Peter Ndlovhu. Ndlovu scored three goals in all matches played by Zimbabwe in Tunisia at AFCON in 2004.
Musona (Captain) is going to lead the Warriors in participating in the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

ZIFA president Felton Kamambo has announced that all the gate takings from the forthcoming Warriors match will be channelled towards Cyclone Idai victims.
The Warriors are set to play Congo Brazzaville on Sunday for their decisive 2019 Afcon qualifier. Zimbabwe needs only a point to guarantee qualification for the continent’s soccer showpiece. In the first leg played in Brazzaville, Congo between the two sides, the match ended 1-1 after the Warriors squandered a number of inviting chances to score a winner.
Tickets can be bought online at <a class="vglnk" href="http://www.clicknpay.africa/" rel="nofollow">www.clicknpay.africa</a> . The online tickets come through your email and you can download it to your phone. Physical tickets are sold at selected outlets across the country. Fans intending to watch the Warriors’ tie have to dig deep into their pockets for as much as $200 for the VVIP ticket. The VVIP ticket rose four-fold from the previous price of $50 when Zimbabwe hosted DRC in the last home match in October last year. Entrance fees to the bays 15-18 also rose from $10 to $50, while the cheapest ticket for the rest of the ground will be $10.

South Africa Egypt have both launched bids for the right to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. This comes after CAF stripped Cameroon of the hosting rights because of delays with its preparations and political instability.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced both bids on Saturday and said their executive committee will decide the new host at a meeting to be held in Dakar, Senegal on January
Egypt and South Africa are bidding to replace Cameroon as host of next year’s African Cup of Nations and the winner will have just five months to put preparations in place for the continent’s top soccer tournament.
That date, which was pushed back from December 31 will give the chosen host limited time to prepare for a tournament which is scheduled to kick off on June 15 and is the first to be increased from 16 to 24 teams.
Although Egypt and South Africa have the best soccer infrastructure in Africa, organising a tournament at such short-notice still promises to be a challenge for both countries.
South Africa hosted the continent’s first World Cup in 2010 and already has world-class stadiums in place from that tournament.
The African soccer body still needs to decide that if South Africa’s bid was successful whether they would automatically qualify for the tournament as the host nation.
Egypt has already qualified but South African still has a final qualifier to play in March. CAF has still not decided if Cameroon, the defending African champion, will retain its place at the tournament as the original host.

South Africa And Egypt Rival To Host 2019 Africa Cup of Nations

Cameroon’s Government has issued a press statement responding to the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip the country of hosting next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF said it is because of delays in the progress of Cameroon’s preparation for the tournament, due to start in June. However, Cameroon labelled the decision ‘unmerited’ “unfair” &amp; a ‘flagrant injustice’. The country also pledged to complete all the AFCON 2019 infrastructure. Below is the press statement:
<blockquote>The Government of the Republic of Cameroon has taken note with dismay of the decision taken by the CAF Executive Committee, which met in Accra last November 30, 2018, to withdraw the hosting of the 2019 AFCON from Cameroon.
This surprising decision for more than one reason, is certainly unfair with regard to the huge investments made by our country, which has led to outstanding modem infrastructures as witnessed by all. In the same vein, this decision is unmerited considering the resolve of the Head of State and the people of Cameroon to make all-out effort to host a remarkable celebration of African football in 2019.
It is clear from the outset of this matter, that, our country has been subjected to a treatment which can therefore give rise to questioning. In the face of this blatant injustice, the Government of the Republic urges the People of Cameroon to remain calm and not to indulge into futile arguments. Cameroon has put in a creditable performance. It shall prove it to the entire world by completing with the same determination and on time the construction of these modern infrastructures belonging to the Cameroonian people, as pledged by the Head of State.
Nevertheless, it is worth underscoring that African football would not match the exploits of other better performing continents in the absence of an ethical conduct. Our country, which has written the pages of African football in bold letters, will not relent her efforts in working with other African countries and international football bodies to develop football in our beloved Africa.</blockquote>

Full Text: Cameroon Challenges CAF Decision To Withdraw AFCON 2019 Hosting Rights

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has stripped Cameroon of hosting next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF said it is because of delays in the progress of Cameroon’s preparation for the tournament, due to start in June. The decision was made at a meeting on Friday in Accra, Ghana, that lasted more than 10 hours. CAF said it will work to “determine a new organising country by the end of the year. In a statement, CAF said
<blockquote>…a number of compliance conditions have not been met” and it did not want to expose the Africa Cup of Nations to “any issues that could impact on the success of the most prestigious African competition”.</blockquote>
Caf added postponing the tournament was not possible due to contractual commitments. The tournament is set to be the first held in June and July and will be expanded from 16 to 24 teams. BBC Sport understands Morocco; having stepped in to hold this year’s African Nations Championship after Kenya were deemed not ready – South Africa and Egypt are all under consideration as replacement hosts.

Cameroon Stripped Of Hosting 2019 AFCON

The Warriors lost 1-0 to Liberia in an AFCON Qualifier match played on Sunday.
Liberia’s William Jebor scored the only goal in the 71st minute. Zimbabwe dominated the first half with Marvelous Nakamba winning more balls on the midfield. They created some good chances with Tinotenda Kadewere failing to score after getting two good opportunities. Liberia also made some attacks but never brought any threat towards keeper Edmore Sibanda as the defence remained disciplined.
