Six (6) security officers drawn from various State security organs collapsed at different intervals during the Independence Day commemorations parade held at Chinhoyi Stadium on Monday.
The officers were drawn from the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), Airforce of Zimbabwe (AFZ), Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS). 
The four men and two women were whisked away by paramedics after fainting in the simmering Autumn heat.
A former ZNA member, who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com on condition of anonymity, suggested that the lack of physical fitness could have contributed to the falling incidents. He said:

It is very rare to witness a parade recording such a high number of members collapsing for one reason or the other.
This is clear testimony these guys lack physical fitness, and the training and retraining regime has slackened over the years.

Chinhoyi Stadium was filled to capacity as surrounding communities such as Alaska and Shackleton also came to commemorate the 42nd independence anniversary.

Six Security Officers Faint During Independence Parade

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday urged Zimbabweans living abroad to be unwavering in the face of hardships they may face in their respective host countries.
This comes after Zimbabwean Elvis Nyathi was brutally murdered by an anti-immigrant mob in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, South Africa on 6 April for not having a passport.
Delivering his Independence Day Speech at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo this Monday, Mnangagwa said:
<blockquote>
Like all other citizens, those in the Diaspora are indeed welcome to participate and invest in all sectors of the economy as we build the Zimbabwe we all want.
In the meantime, I urge our citizens in the Diaspora to remain resolute, in spite of the many challenging circumstances they may face in their host countries.

He added that those living in the diaspora who are willing to return home should do so and assured them that they will be welcomed with open arms. Said Mnangagwa:

Mnangagwa Urges Diasporans To Remain Unwavering

South Africa’s third-largest party, the EFF led by Julius Malema has congratulated Zimbabwe on its 42nd Independence anniversary this Monday, 18 April 2022.
In a statement, EFF also asked Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa to forgive South Africa and its people for violent attacks on foreigners in SA. The statement read:

The EFF joins the people of Africa and the world in celebrating the 42nd anniversary of the independence of Zimbabwe, from the yoke of British colonialism.
Cecil Rhodes’s 1889 expedition of Africa is characterized by genocide against African people, land grabs and subjugation of Africans to wars of land dispossession and resistance.
The white colonialists were so shameless and disrespectful that they renamed African land after themselves.
The atrocities of Cecil Rhodes are imprintable, but still, the government of South Africa finds no offence in keeping this brutal colonialist’ name in a South African institute of higher learning, the so-called Rhodes University.
Statues of brutal white settlers and amongst them Cecil Rhodes are still in public spaces of South Africa, at the behest of the ruling party and its enablers, white monopoly capital.
This independence anniversary comes at a time of heightened Afrophobia that resulted in a violent and merciless killing of a gardener, Elvis Nyathi, who was accused of stealing jobs, gardening deemed a job stolen.
On this day, we call upon the people of our sister country, Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa to forgive South Africa and its people for the misdemeanours and criminality of a few, misled by the lack of uBuntu, to hate Africans in Africa.
The EFF recalls with deep sense of shock the death of Ernesto Alfabeto Nhamuave who was beaten, stabbed and set alight in an informal settlement in 2015 for selling sweets in a street that deemed such as stealing of jobs and opportunities for South Africans. To date, no one has been arrested for this gruesome act of inhumanity.
Criminality knows no nationality, in fact, the real criminality is at the doorsteps of white settlers who invaded and grabbed land and mineral resources for themselves at the exclusion of Africans.
Afrophobic violence in the democratic South African timeline spans from 1994 and reached its peak in 2008 when 62 Africans from other parts of Africa including South Africans were massacred by South Africans.
The level of self-hate and inhumanity of senseless killing of other Africans by Africans must be condemned in its entirety and unequivocally, with the contempt it deserves.
To the people of our sister country Zimbabwe, on this day, we wish you well on the anniversary of the glorious triumph of the People’s War, Hondo, against white minority settlers.

Malema Asks For Forgiveness On Zimbabwe's 42nd Independence Anniversary | Full Statement

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has blamed sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Western powers for the near-collapse of the country’s health delivery system.
Addressing delegates at the 42nd national Independence Day celebrations held at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo on Monday, Mnangagwa said:

In spite of the devastating illegal and unjustified economic sanctions on our health delivery system and other social services, we are not burying our heads in the sand.
We are certainly moving forward. Key milestones are being achieved, with Zimbabwe recording a reduction in maternal mortality.

Mnangagwa said in spite of the sanctions, his administration is reviving the country’s pharmaceutical sector. He said:

The resuscitation of the Pharmaceutical Sector through the deployment of various research and development initiatives at innovation hubs is being speeded up. I call upon our people to remain alert to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The President also urged the public to stay alert to the coronavirus and parents to ensure the vaccination of their children aged 12 years and above. He said:

Zimbabwe’s health sector has experienced a brain drain over the years as experienced health professionals have moved abroad seeking greener pastures.

Full statement by the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) marking the 42nd Independence Day anniversary.
<blockquote>
<h2>Zimbabwe commemorates its independence from white colonial rule on 18 April yearly.</h2>
The ushering in of independence marked the start of a nation grounded on respect for human rights and values of mutual respect and dignity.
Today, the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) joins the rest of the country in saluting heroes, living and departed, of the liberation struggle whilst lamenting the deplorable oppression, and abuse of human rights that is now the order of the day.
Section 3 (1) (c) (g) and (i) of the Constitution states that Zimbabwe is founded on, among others, the respect of fundamental human rights and freedoms, gender equality and recognition and respect for the liberation struggle.
This dovetails with the theme of this year’s independence celebrations, “Zim@42- Leaving no one and no place behind.”
However, the current socio-economic situation does not auger with the theme and indeed the Constitution.
For the past 42 years, the gap between the rich and the poor has been growing, to the extent of diminishing this year’s theme without reasonable doubt.
The gap between the rich and the poor is widening. Corruption at the highest level of society has allegedly been rampant.
Manipulation of currencies and inconsistencies in economic policies by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has widened inequalities among citizens.
The collapsing economy, caused by currency distortions, has seen the prices of basic commodities going beyond the reach of many, mostly poorly paid, citizens, government workers included.
Many are struggling to access essential staple food, clean water, electricity, and health services.
Selective application of the law especially favouring the ruling elite and cartels connected to them has indeed left behind many citizens.
Grand corruption involving national resources has been left unchecked while ruling party functionaries have been left to violate the law with impunity.
The independence celebrations also come when disturbing developments are taking place in the country.
These include the closure of civic space and continuous abuse of human rights, particularly the opposition supporters and human rights defenders.
It is worrying that the government has taken a preoccupation with crafting laws to close civic space, taking the country decades back.
The Private Voluntary Organisations (PVO) Amendment Bill, the proposed Patriotic Bill, and the Cyber Security Act, among others, are not laws fit for an independent country that has seen the worst form of repression from the colonial government using similar laws.
The Forum acknowledges that true independence is when all the people of Zimbabwe are truly free, and their rights and freedoms are respected and protected.
It is regrettable that the true meaning of independence has lost value to many Zimbabweans because of the worsening economic situation in the country and the ever-rising political tensions in betrayal of the fundamental rights and freedoms which are guaranteed by Chapter 4 of our Constitution.
The Forum, therefore, urges the government of Zimbabwe to;
(i) address the economic challenges faced by Zimbabweans;
(ii) respect the values that the brave sons and daughters who took up arms fought for;
(iii) commit to uniting citizens and fulfilling their desire for freedom, justice, and equality;
(iv) commit to the values of democracy, good, transparent, and accountable governance.
(v) allow for an enabling environment and open civic space.

Human Rights NGO Forum Statement On The 42nd Independence Anniversary | Full Text

Highlanders and Dynamos have promised fireworks when they clash in the Independence Day Trophy final at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo on Monday afternoon.
Highlanders coach Mandla Mpofu said beating Dynamos will bring happiness to the Bosso faithful. Said Mpofu:

It doesn’t matter what is at stake when you play Dynamos. It is a very big game. We want to make sure that fans come in their numbers and watch Highlanders play good football.
It doesn’t matter how many goals we will score against Dynamos, even half a goal as long as we beat Dynamos. It means a lot for us, the club and the community at large.
As a coach, one has to be successful and these are the opportunities. It’s pride at stake and we need to beat Dynamos at all costs.

Meanwhile, Dynamos coach Tonderai Ndiraya said his players are champing at the bit to play the match as most of them haven’t played in a cup final before. Said Ndiraya:

Highlanders, Dynamos Go Head To Head

ZAPU president Sibangilizwe Nkomo said the opposition party will not celebrate the country’s 42nd independence anniversary this Monday but will be in mourning “the death of our collective dignity”.
This year’s Independence Day celebrations will be held at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo.
It will be the first time that the event has been hosted by the country’s second-largest city since the attainment of independence in 1980.
In his independence message, Nkomo, who is also the son of the late nationalist and former vice president, Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, said the party will be mourning the loss of lives before and after independence. Nkomo said:

ZAPU will be mourning than celebrating on Monday 18th of April 2022. We are mourning the women who die giving birth in our hospitals due to a lack of care and medicinal support. We are mourning the looting of our granite by the Chinese in Mutoko.
We are mourning the lives of compatriots murdered in neighbouring countries.
We are mourning the looting of our gold from Kwekwe and Gwanda.
We are mourning the endemic corruption, where the Anti-corruption agency has become corrupt itself.
</blockquote>
Nkomo said ZAPU will be running a #iamceleblackit hashtag campaign on social media, to encourage Zimbabweans, not to celebrate independence.
He called upon every Zimbabwean to wear a black top, doek or armband as an act of mourning all heroes, living and the departed, who sacrificed their lives for nothing. He added:

Barely two years after this historic moment, the new regime embarked on an orgy of violence against our supporters and members, resulting in the loss of over 20 000 lives in a genocide known today as Gukurahundi.
I am 64 years old now, and together with millions of my compatriots, have, for more than four decades, been subjected to living with the painful reality that the dream of a prosperous Zimbabwe, as proclaimed on the 18th of April 1980, was not only deferred but hijacked and ruined by merciless individuals organized under a political party called ZANU PF.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has invited all opposition parties to attend this year’s celebrations, which will be held at Barbourfields stadium.

The opposition CCC has encouraged its supporters and members countrywide to attend Independence Day celebrations organised by the ZANU PF-led Government in their respective areas.
In a statement, CCC national spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said the party reverences all who fought for the attainment of the country’s independence from white minority rule. Below is the statement in full:

THE LIBERATION PROMISE IS OUR GENERATIONAL MANDATE
On the 18th of April 2022, we celebrate 42 years of independence. We honour and commemorate this important day as we mark and look to the sacrifices made by our forebears who fought on our behalf for the liberation of our country.
The liberation struggle was anchored on the fight for freedom, dignity, the people’s sovereign will and self-determination. 
Independence means freedom, the pursuit of happiness, national pride and national dignity.
We acknowledge that, although we attained our independence in 1980, we are yet to be fully free and fully independent.
This entails the holding of free and fair elections and the upholding of fundamental rights and freedoms of the citizens.
As a citizens’ movement, we acknowledge the effort and sacrifices of our liberation heroes, war veterans, war collaborators and citizens, living and departed, who contributed to the attainment of the liberation of our nation from colonial rule.
Whereas there are political differences, there is no debate about our honour, respect and acknowledgement of all national institutions, organs, events and programs. 
Our loyalty to Zimbabwe and our loyalty to the country is absolute as a marker of the preservation of our history, legacy and identity as a people.
Independence Day belongs to us all as Zimbabwean citizens. For this reason, we encourage all citizens to participate in such important national processes and events without tainting them with partisan conduct. 
We do so for our country and for our collective being as a people.
Accordingly, we assert that we are going to be represented at all key national events. 
National events and state institutions are far greater than any political party or sectarian interests.
The liberation promise is our generational mandate.

"Our Loyalty To The Country Is Absolute," CCC Urges Supporters To Attend Independence Day Events

CCC leader Nelson Chamisa says his party will not reverse the country’s Land Reform Programme if elected to form the next government in the 2023 elections.
Chamisa made the remarks in his 42nd Independence Day message. He said every Zimbabwean citizen should respect and honour those who contributed to the country’s liberation struggle.
He also called upon Zimbabweans to set aside their political differences and work together for the development of the nation. Said Chamisa:

It is not easy for us to have a liberated country where people worked hard and sacrificed their lives for us to enjoy this day. We have reclaimed our soil back and as such, the soil remains ours.
The land that was given to the people through the land reform programme will remain ours. The programme is, therefore, irreversible.
No one shall separate us from our land and we will remain united on the agreement we made as Zimbabweans to take back what is ours.
Let us preserve the land and work hard to produce as a nation.

Eighteen (18) artistes will perform at the 2022 Independence Day gala in Bulawayo, with most of them drawn from Matabeleland provinces.

18 Musicians To Perform At Independence Gala

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has formally invited all political leaders in the country and former cabinet ministers to the Independence Day celebrations set to take place in Bulawayo.
Nelson Chamisa is the leader of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) which won 19 out of 28 contested parliamentary seats in the 26 March by-elections.
He is also a former Cabinet Minister as he held the Information Communication Technology portfolio from 13 February 2009 to 31 July 2013 in the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo, told reporters that all the political leaders in the country have been invited both for the State Reception that will take place on 17 April, at State House in Bulawayo and Independence Day celebrations to take place at Barboufields Stadium the following day. Said Moyo:

The leaders have been invited to come to the celebrations. The President’s emphasis has been that all the political leaders of this country should be invited both for the State Reception that will take place on April 17, at State House in Bulawayo and Independence Day celebrations.
Invitations have been sent to their offices and we started sending these yesterday (Thursday), we have ensured that our officials have contacted all the political leaders to tell them that their cards can either be picked up here in Bulawayo or at their offices.
The President has also invited all political leaders in this country to the VIP stands that have been prepared for these celebrations.

Zimbabwe’s two biggest football clubs, Highlanders FC and Dynamos FC will compete for the Independence trophy.

Mnangagwa Invites Chamisa To Independence Day Celebrations

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) will take a break this coming weekend and will resume the following weekend with matchday 12 games.
The only match during the long weekend will be the Independence Day Trophy final between Highlanders and Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium on Monday.
Last year DeMbare defeated Bosso 2-0 at the National Sports Stadium in Harare to lift that year’s edition of the Uhuru cup.
PSL spokesperson Kudzai Bare on Tuesday confirmed that the league will be suspended to make way for the Independence Day Trophy final. She said:

We have a holiday this weekend and we want to focus on the Independence Cup.
</blockquote>
Last Dynamos received US$20 000 for winning the cup while the losers, Highlanders, were given US$15 000.
The PSL has released league fixtures after the Easter holidays and the Independence holidays.

PSL Takes A Break For Independence Day Trophy Final

All people who will attend the main 20 celebrations to be held at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo will be tested for the coronavirus.
Bulawayo City Council director of health services Edwin Sibanda said they will test everyone entering the stadium while all the other COVID-19 protocols will be observed at the event. Said, Dr Sibanda:

All attendees will be tested, and all COVID-19 protocols will be observed. Vaccination is available at all clinics and central hospitals for free and QR codes on vaccination cards are being activated at the Tower Block.

Independence Day is on 18 April and this year the country celebrates 42 years of freedom and black majority rule.
Barbourfields Stadium will become the first venue outside Harare to host the main Independence Day celebrations since 1980.
Meanwhile, the celebrations will include a football match between perennial rivals Highlanders and Dynamos, and later, members of the public will be treated to a music gala.
