Police have raised concerns about the high number of murder cases reported across the country in the past week.
In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that 47 murder cases were recorded between December 20 and December 26, 2024.
Nyathi said many of these incidents stemmed from disputes at beer-drinking spots or during sporting events and family and community conflicts during gatherings. Some cases involved individuals settling personal scores.
One particularly tragic incident involved a 22-year-old man from Kuwadzana, Harare, who fatally assaulted his 70-year-old grandmother on Boxing Day because she did not give him a Christmas present. 
Commissioner Nyathi’s statement highlights the severity of this issue:

ZIMBABWE REPUBLIC POLICE EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER MURDER CASES IN THE COUNTRY
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with the number of murder cases which are being recorded throughout the country. 47 cases of murder have been received during the period 20th December 2024 to 26th December 2024.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has established that the murder cases are emanating from disputes at beer drinking binge or sporting activities, family and community disputes during gatherings, attacks by unknown suspects while walking at night, the settling of scores during Christmas Day by individuals and groups and fighting over girlfriends, among others.
In one of the cases which occurred on 25th December 2024 at around 1900 hours at Machipisa Tuckshops, Mwenezi, Triangle, Mastard Chauke (22) had a misunderstanding with Tongai Moyo who had bumped into him during a beer-drinking spree.
Mastard Chauke threw a stone towards Tongai Moyo which hit Ostern Mangaru (29) on the chest instead. The victim fell to the ground and died on the spot.
In another murder case which occurred on 25th December 2024 at around 2100 hours. Learnmore Mudzengi (36) stabbed Sydney Mudzengi (21) with a Columbian knife once on the chest at Musavezi Business Centre, Shurugwi.
The suspect allegedly had a misunderstanding with the victim over a token which went missing whilst playing pool.
After committing the offence, the suspect fled from the scene and was later apprehended by the Police for the due process of the law to take its course.
On 26th December 2024 at around 0100 hours and at a house in Kuwadzana 7, Harare, Nihipalakar Muyaya (22) allegedly assaulted his grandmother, Agnes Duri (70) with clenched fists and booted feet for not giving him a present during the Christmas period.

The victim was later found lying lifeless in her room with blood coming out of her mouth and ears. The suspect was subsequently arrested.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of Polite Nyauro (23) who was found lifeless at Chipfuvamiti Primary School, Makonde on 26th December 2024.
The victim had been reported missing after he had gone for a beer-drinking binge at Chipfuvamiti Business Centre, Makonde in the company of his two brothers on the 25th December 2024.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the public to find peaceful methods of resolving disputes or differences at the family and society levels.
The church, traditional leaders, and the general community are implored to join the effort to ensure the public respects the sanctity of human life.
The Police will continue to engage communities to promote the culture of law-abiding citizens in all facets of life.

Harare Man Kills His Grandmother For Not Giving Him A Christmas Present

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released road traffic accident statistics for the period from 15th December 2024 to 26th December 2024.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said on Friday that a total of 1,211 road traffic accidents were recorded during this period in 2024, compared to 1,454 accidents recorded in the same period in 2023.
This year, 65 fatal accidents were recorded, while 50 fatal accidents occurred in 2023. From 15th December 2024 to 26th December 2024, 77 people died in road accidents, compared to 71 fatalities during the same period in 2023.
Commissioner Nyathi also revealed that in 2024, 401 people were injured in road traffic accidents, compared to 393 injuries in the same period in 2023.
He noted that some accidents were caused by driver fatigue and negligent conduct, with most incidents involving private vehicles where either drivers or passengers perished.
The ZRP reported only one major road traffic accident involving public service vehicles, which occurred on 22nd December 2024, when three buses collided, resulting in two fatalities. Added Commissioner Nyathi:

On 22nd December 2024, 106 road traffic accidents were recorded where seven people were killed while 38 people were injured.
On 25th December 2024, 104 road traffic accidents were recorded where 13 people were killed while 16 people were injured.
On 26th December 2024, 87 road traffic accidents were recorded where 11 people were killed while 40 people were injured.
Accidents involving pedestrians trying to cross the roads have also been recorded. Drivers are urged to be observant especially when approaching built-up areas or places frequented by the public including residential areas.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that drivers should avoid speeding and overtaking in circumstances that are clearly not safe to do so.
Above all, motorists are implored not to overload vehicles when travelling on the country’s roads.
The public is advised to report errant drivers on the roads at any nearest police station or call National Complaints Desk number 0242 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to enforce all road rules and regulations without fear or favour.
On the other hand, motorists are implored to be responsible and effectively contribute towards road safety in the country.

During the festive season in 2024, there were more accidents and deaths on the roads in Zimbabwe compared to 2023. 65 fatal accidents happened, and 77 people died in 2024, while there were 50 fatal accidents and 71 deaths in 2023. Most accidents were caused by tired or careless drivers, with private vehicles involved the most. The police urge drivers to be careful, not speed, and not overload their vehicles. They also ask the public to report dangerous drivers and help make the roads safer.

2024 Festive Season Records More Fatal Accidents And Deaths Compared To 2023

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has hinted at an imminent Cabinet reshuffle, saying he used the Christmas holiday to review the performance of his Cabinet team to determine whether each member was contributing effectively or needed replacement.
In an interview with ZBC News at his official residence in Harare, Mnangagwa said he spends Christmas Day reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of his team, as well as ways to improve government programs and policies, given the reduced engagements and phone calls on that day.
When asked if he would continue with his current team into the new year, President Mnangagwa said he would make a statement to the nation in the new year. He said:

I will make my statement after the 1st of January, because just now, everyone is happy, they are celebrating Christmas day and for you to call to tell them that you are no longer part of my team, it would not augur well, but that is the time I reflect how we have worked as a team, what weaknesses have I identified, what is necessary to execute Government programmes.

Last week, Martin Rushwaya, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, announced that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had retired Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner General Tandabantu Godwin Matanga, effective December 31, 2024.
Rushwaya also revealed that Mnangagwa had appointed Deputy Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba as Matanga’s successor. Mutamba is set to assume the role of ZRP Commissioner General on January 1, 2025.

Mnangagwa Hints At Imminent Cabinet Reshuffle

Over 200 babies were born on Christmas Day in the country’s major hospitals in Harare, Bulawayo and Chitungwiza.
As reported by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/over-200-babies-born-on-christmas-day/">The Herald</a>, Sally Mugabe Central Hospital recorded 54 births, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals 42, while Chitungwiza Central Hospital recorded 24.
In Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, Bulawayo, at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), 26 children were born on Christmas Day, 13 boys and 13 girls while at Mpilo Central Hospital 20 babies were delivered, (13 girls) and seven boys.
Sally Mugabe Central Hospital senior nursing officer Ruth Rukarwa revealed they received 54 live births and one loss.
She said that of the 55 babies born on Christmas Day, 28 were baby girls and 27 were baby boys. Added Rukarwa:

From the two delivery methods that we had last Christmas, the major was the normal vertex delivery with 45, where we say this is a normal delivery and nine deliveries were through Caesarean section.

She further revealed that among mothers who delivered their babies on Christmas Day were two teenagers who gave birth safely. Said Rukarwa:

We delivered three live babies from the teenagers, a boy and a girl from 17-year-old mothers and a baby girl also from a 15-year-old mother.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring South Africa, over 800 babies were born at state hospitals on Christmas Day by lunchtime.
By lunchtime on 25 December 2024, at least 366 boys and 287 girls had been delivered.
Among the newborns were six sets of twins, recorded nationwide by midday. Polokwane witnessed one of the youngest mothers, a 13-year-old.
Other teenage mothers included three 15-year-olds in KwaZulu-Natal and a 16-year-old in Klerksdorp.
