Warriors interim coach Jairos Tapera expressed pride in his squad despite their elimination from the ongoing Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup 2024 in South Africa.
Although the Warriors secured victories against Comoros and Zambia with scores of 1-0 and 2-0 respectively, their hopes of advancing to the semifinals were dashed after a 2-0 defeat to Kenya in the final Group B match on Tuesday.
Despite their strong start, which saw them leading the group with six points, Zimbabwe could not maintain their momentum and exited the tournament.
Interestingly, Zimbabwe secured a 1-0 victory against Comoros, Comoros triumphed over Kenya with a 2-0 score, and Kenya emerged victorious against Zimbabwe with a 2-0 result.
Reflecting on the team’s performance after Tuesday’s match, Tapera said that he was proud of the players’ efforts. He said:

I can’t say I am proud of the six points that we got because there was a chance for us to move forward.
But I am proud of the performance of the boys. Most of these guys, it was their first time to play in an international competition and they showed a lot of skill and organisation, which I feel if given an opportunity, they can graduate to the next level.
Apart from the result, I’m proud of the boys. They showed a lot of courage and going forward I am sure we will have a stable national team.

Reflecting on the loss to the Harambee Stars, Tapera lamented the Warriors’ missed opportunities and their inability to maintain possession of the ball. He said:

It was a tale of two halves. We were not bad in the first half; we were so much organised and we were moving around the ball.
We got some chances in the first half which I thought we should have scored. If we had scored those chances, Kenya were going to be desperate and become vulnerable, but they scored first and we became desperate in a way.
We tried to change the movements and positions to add some strikers but we were not organised in terms of keeping the ball.

In the end, Zimbabwe plummeted from the top of Group B before the match to third place, as three teams finished tied on six points and had to be separated by goal difference.
Comoros, who secured a 1-0 victory over Zambia on the same day, claimed the top spot and advanced directly to the semifinals as group leaders.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s fate hinges on Wednesday’s Group C results to determine if they qualify as the best runner-up.
Defending champions Zambia departed the tournament without earning a single point.

Tapera Proud Of Warriors Despite 2024 COSAFA Cup Exit

The Warriors have been eliminated from the ongoing Hollywoodbets COSAFA CUP 2024 tournament in South Africa after suffering a 0-2 defeat against Kenya in a crucial Group match at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium.
Earlier reports incorrectly stated that the Warriors had secured a spot in the semifinals following a 2-0 victory over Zambia on Sunday.
However, despite accumulating six points in Group B, the Warriors finished third due to goal difference, despite being level with Comoros and Kenya.
Comoros claimed the top spot in Group B with a superior goal difference of +2. Kenya, also with a +2 goal difference, lost out to Comoros on the head-to-head rule.
In their previous encounter, Comoros defeated Kenya 2-0, which was decisive in determining the group standings after both teams amassed 6 points each and had a goal difference of +2.
Zimbabwe had a +1 goal difference after scoring 3 goals and conceding 2.
Only the top team from each of the three groups and the best-placed runner-up progress to the semifinals.
Kenya’s semifinal berth is yet to be confirmed, pending the completion of matches in the other groups to determine the best-placed runner-up.

Warriors Eliminated From COSAFA CUP 2024 After Defeat to Kenya

Warriors interim coach Jairos Tapera has commended his squad for their performances at the ongoing Hollywoodbets COSAFA CUP 2024 tournament in South Africa, where they secured maximum points in two matches.
Following a 1-0 victory over Comoros on Thursday, Zimbabwe claimed a 2-0 win against rivals Zambia on Sunday.
Tapera, who also coaches Manica Diamonds, had faced criticism after the Warriors’ defeats to Lesotho and South Africa in the 2026 CAF World Cup qualifiers earlier in June.
Ahead of the Warriors’ final Group B game, Tapera expressed his confidence in the players’ performances.
The majority of the players in the squad compete in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL). Said Tapera (via <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200029075/tapera-heaps-praise-on-warriors">NewsDay</a>):

In terms of performance and results, these boys have done very well. We are proud of their performance in all departments. They are doing exceptionally well and we wish they continued doing that going forward.
I am not surprised by the performance of this team. I have seen these boys play back home in the league, and I was an admirer of all of them before I got this coaching post.
It was a matter of calling these boys to the team because they are all wonderful players. They are very eager to improve in all aspects of the game.

He specifically mentioned Michael Tapera, who plays for Manica Diamonds but is not related to him.
Michael has scored in both of the Warriors’ matches so far, contributing two of the three goals scored by the team at COSAFA. Said Tapera:

Everybody can see how good he is. He has been scoring goals at Manica Diamonds, so this is just a continuation of what he has been doing in Zimbabwe. I am happy for him and I wish he continues to improve going forward.

Zimbabwe will face Kenya this afternoon in their final pool game, aiming to secure a semi-final spot.
Tapera mentioned that he plans to rotate the team against Kenya to give all players a chance to showcase their abilities, allowing the technical team to assess their performances.
Defenders Malvin Hativagone, Shane Maroodza from Huddersfield, and Joey Phuti, who made his debut against Zambia as a late substitute, are uncertain for the match due to injuries.

Tapera Applauds Warriors' Strong Start At COSAFA

The Warriors secured their second consecutive victory at the ongoing HollywoodBets COSAFA Cup, defeating defending champions Zambia 2-0 in a Group B match played at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in South Africa on Sunday.
Michael Tapera, who had scored the winning goal against Comoros in the previous week, and Takunda Benhura both found the net in the first half to give the Warriors the win over a 10-man Chipolopolo side.
The Warriors dominated the match in front of a large, enthusiastic Zimbabwean crowd, which came as no surprise given the significant Zimbabwean diaspora population residing in South Africa.
In the 8th minute of the game, Tapera collected the ball in his own half, dribbled past three Zambian players, and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net to open the scoring.
Zambia’s Killian Kanguluma was shown a second yellow card and subsequently sent off in the 33rd minute after he brought down McKinnon Mushore with a reckless challenge.
Benhura then compounded Zambia’s woes in the 43rd minute, doubling the Warriors’ lead with a well-taken header.
He met a pin-point cross from Farai Banda and powered his header off the crossbar and into the net.
Despite some half-hearted protests from the Zambian players that the ball had not fully crossed the line, the linesman and referee awarded the goal to Zimbabwe without any hesitation.
While Zambia did not concede any further goals in the second half, they also failed to seriously threaten the Zimbabwean goal, and coach Jairos Tapera used the opportunity to hand a debut to Joey Phuthi, who replaced Tinotenda Meke in the 78th minute.
Zimbabwe midfielder Richard Hachiro was named Player of the Match.
With the victory, the Warriors have now taken control of Group B, winning both of their opening matches.
In contrast, the defending champions Zambia are yet to register a point, having lost their first two games by an identical 2-0 scoreline, against Kenya and Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe will now face Kenya in their final group-stage encounter on Tuesday, while Zambia will take on Comoros on the same day.

Zimbabwe Beat Zambia 2-0 In COSAFA Cup Group B Match

FIFA reportedly ordered the ZIFA Normalisation Committee to withdraw five members of the Warriors technical team at the ongoing 2024 COSAFA Cup tournament in South Africa.
According to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/bloated-zifa-team-riles-fifa/">The Herald</a>, the Normalisation Committee was left with no option but to sacrifice Emmanuel Mutumani, Simon Marange, Wonder Mphepo, Zivanai Kawadza and Simbarashe Gochera.
The officials reportedly left Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) on Friday morning, leaving the team without a media liaison officer in South Africa since Mphepo was standing in for Mike Madoda.
Before these officials were sent away, the Warriors were the only team in South Africa that had two goalkeeper coaches – Kawadza and Henry Mckop.
The Warriors also had two performance analysts – Marange and James Makoni.

FIFA Orders ZIFA To Trim "Bloated" COSAFA Technical Team

The Warriors started their 2024 COSAFA Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Group B rivals Comoros in a match played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Thursday afternoon.
Manica Diamonds striker Michael Tapera scored the solitary goal in the second half following a cross from Tinotenda Meke.
In the first half, the Warriors struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and only managed a few long-range tame efforts that were easily gathered by the Comoros goalkeeper.

Zimbabwe dominated the possession, forcing the Islanders to rely mostly on counterattacks but they also failed to make any impact in the final third.
The Warriors came to life in the second half and took the game to Comoros and were rewarded for their improved display with the 54th-minute strike by Tapera.
Coach Jairos Tapera made four substitutions during the match, with Panashe Hilton Mutimbanyoka replacing the goalscorer, Tapera, in the 66th minute.
Tatenda Tavengwa came on for Donald Mudadi, also in the 66th minute, Never Rauzhai replaced Meke in the 79th minute before Denzel Tapuwa came on for Takunda Benhura in the 94th minute.

Tapera Names Starting XI For COSAFA Cup Opener Against Comoros

The Warriors squad has left Harare for Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), South Africa, ahead of the 2024 COSAFA Cup tournament which commences on Wednesday, 26 June.
ZIFA announced the Warriors’ departure via social media on Tuesday afternoon. It said:

Earlier today, the squad was ferried to the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by the Simba Bhora team bus.
Reports indicate that Simba Bhora goalkeeper Simba Chinani was drafted into the Warriors squad before they left for South Africa.
ZIFA, however, has yet to provide the final list of the names of the players in the squad after making several changes to the initial squad for the tournament.

Warriors Depart For 2024 COSAFA Cup Tournament In Gqeberha

The ZIFA Normalisation Committee will need to make changes to the Warriors squad for the 2024 COSAFA Cup.
This will be the third adjustment since the initial squad was announced on June 2.
A revised squad was named just before midnight on June 21, before ZIFA released another list on June 23 with several additional changes.
With the tournament commencing in South Africa on Wednesday, June 26, ZIFA will have to make a further adjustment to the squad.
This is due to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) announcing that local teams are only obligated to release a maximum of two players or officials during the COSAFA Cup.
In a circular sent to clubs, the PSL stated this policy is intended to allow the Castle Lager Premiership to continue uninterrupted during the COSAFA Cup tournament. Reads the circular:

This serves to confirm that all Castle Lager PSL matches will proceed as scheduled this week.
Please be advised that following our arrangement with the ZIFA Normalisation Committee, clubs are not obliged to release more than two players or officials for the COSAFA tournament.

Manica Diamonds has three players selected for the Warriors squad: goalkeeper Joseph Kaunda, defender Tawanda Chisi, and forward Micheal Tapera.
Manica Diamonds head coach Jairos Tapera is expected to take charge of the Warriors at the 2024 COSAFA Cup tournament.
Therefore, further changes to the squad may be necessary if the PSL enforces their directive to limit player releases to a maximum of two per club.

Interim Warriors coach Jairos Tapera has publicly dissociated himself from the Warriors squads announced by the ZIFA Normalisation Committee for the upcoming 2024 COSAFA Cup competition.
On Sunday, June 23, ZIFA named the squad for the regional competition set for South Africa from June 26 to July 7.
This is the third iteration of the Zimbabwe Warriors squad by ZIFA for the upcoming 2024 COSAFA Cup.
The initial squad was announced on June 2, a revised squad was named just before midnight on June 21, and the latest changes were revealed on June 23.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/tapera-disowns-cosafa-squads/">H-Metro</a>, Tapera, the current head coach of Manica Diamonds in the local premiership, stated he was not responsible for naming the Zimbabwe national team squads announced by ZIFA for the 2024 COSAFA Cup. He said:

I don’t know who released the two teams, I haven’t announced anything yet, you will all know when I pick my own players.
The foreign-based players, coming from England, have all confirmed their interest in being part of this tournament.
I don’t know what is happening, as far as I know, anyone who is picked to play for the national team should be supported.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee has made several changes to the Warriors squad for the 2024 COSAFA Cup.
This is the third iteration of the Zimbabwe Warriors squad for the upcoming 2024 COSAFA Cup.
The initial squad was announced on June 2, a revised squad was named just before midnight on June 21, and the latest changes were revealed on June 23.
South Africa will host the tournament in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) from 26 June to 7 July.
Zimbabwe, Zambia, Comoros, and guest nation Kenya are in Group B.
Ngezi Platinum Stars duo Nelson Chadya and Laslie Kashitigu, Highlanders striker Lynoth Chikuhwa and Manica Diamonds trio of Thubelihle Jubani, Geoffrey Chitsumba and Farai Banda, and Bikita Minerals’ Denis Nhongo are among the players dropped from the squad announced on Friday last week.

Kenya has been drawn in Group B of the 2024 COSAFA Cup tournament alongside Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the Comoros.
The tournament will be staged in Durban, South Africa from 26 June to 7 July.
Malawi had been drawn in Group B but withdrew from the tournament as the country is currently in mourning following the death of Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima.
The Harambe Stars’ participation was confirmed by the Kenyan FA boss Nick Mwendwa, telling <a href="https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/sports/2024/06/17/harambee-stars-invited-for-2024-cosafa-championship/#:~:text=NAIROBI%2C%20Kenya%2C%20Jun%2017%20%E2%80%93,pulled%20out%20of%20the%20tournament.">Capital FM website:</a>

The 2024 COSAFA Cup meeting will mark the second time that Zimbabwe and Kenya have played each other this year after the two nations participated in the Four-nation tournament in Malawi in March. The Harambe Stars beat the Warriors 3-1.
Group A has South Africa, Mozambique, Eswatini and Botswana, while Group C has Angola, Namibia, Lesotho, and Seychelles.
The three pool winners and the best runner-up will advance to the semifinals.
The island nations of Madagascar and Mauritius have opted not to compete in 2024.
Meanwhile, Warriors interim coach Jairos Tapera said he will overhaul the squad that was initially announced by the ZIFA Normalisation Committee for the tournament. He said:

Definitely the squad that you saw will be changed. We are going to sit down with my technical team to work on a new team since we would want to base our squad on under-23 selections.
Given that we have to look into the future, we feel this is a tournament to give opportunities to players who have shown promise and are still under the age of 23 years.
Of course, there will be one or two experienced players to make up the spine of the team. So, we are trying to build from there.
But those other players under the age of 23 who have already graduated from the senior team will not be called up because they have already proved themselves.
There is no reason we should be calling someone like Tawanda Chirewa, we should be paving the way for others.

Warriors interim coach Jairos Tapera will overhaul the squad that was initially announced by the ZIFA Normalisation Committee for the 2024 COSAFA Cup, following the confirmation of the new dates for the tournament.
The 2024 COSAFA Cup will be staged in Durban, South Africa from 26 June to 7 July.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/tapera-to-overhaul-cosafa-cup-squad/">The Herald</a>, Tapera said he would change the squad and involve players under the age of 23 years. He said:

Zimbabwe Drawn In Group B Of 2024 COSAFA Cup Tournament

The 2024 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup will be staged in South Africa from 26 June to 7 July and will retain last year’s format.
The group stage draw will be held this Friday, 14 June, at 11 AM CAT and will be streamed live on the COSAFA Facebook and YouTube pages.
The tournament was initially scheduled for 14-22 June before COSAFA announced its postponement earlier this month.
The format will again see 12 teams take part, split into three groups of four sides, with the three pool winners and the best runner-up advancing to the semifinals.
Hosts South Africa, last year’s winners Zambia and Angola, the next best-placed side according to the FIFA World Rankings, will be the three-seeded teams.
The island nations of Madagascar and Mauritius have opted not to compete in 2024.
COSAFA believes the competition will give vital game-time for players and coaches to teams ahead of the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals expected to be played later this year.
The format ensures each country will play a minimum of three games up to a maximum of five throughout the competition.
It also allows for an extra day’s rest between most pool games, a boost for player welfare.
Only five nations have lifted the COSAFA Cup in the 22 previous editions of the tournament.
Zambia has seven titles, more than any other nation, with Zimbabwe sitting in second position with six titles. South Africa has won the COSAFA Cup five times, Angola (three) and Namibia (one).
Mozambique, Malawi, Botswana and Lesotho have all been finalists twice but ended up on the losing side on both occasions.
Guest nation Senegal is the only other national to reach the final but lost to South Africa in 2021.
Zimbabwe will take part in this year’s edition after FIFA lifted the ban it had imposed on ZIFA due to third-party interference.

COSAFA Announces New Dates For 2024 COSAFA Cup

The Council of Southern African Football Association (COSAFA) on Tuesday announced the postponement of the 2024 COSAFA Cup tournament.
In a statement, COSAFA said the competition, which was scheduled for 14-22 June in South Africa, will now happen at a later date in June or in July. COSAFA said:
